While the first ''Matrix'' is one of the greatest recent science fiction films, the second and third do lack somewhat, philosophically.  The action sequences have been kicked up a notch, which should appeal to movie-goers not neccesarily big fans of the trilogy.  I don't think, however, that the last two were failures of any kind.  They wrapped things up quite nicely.  The first film focused on birth, the second on life, and the third on death.  Without the sequels, the first film would not be considered as great.  To close, ''Matrix'' rocks.  I recommend the 10-disc set for behind-the-scenes footage and ''Animatrix''.
