So, GIFs are only "desirable" as animated images? Does that mean that they're against the rules otherwise? Because I have an archaic computer, and the program I used to capture my Strong Madlib would have captured it without the dither as a GIF. In other words, are GIF images allowed for user pages - yes or no? Darth Katana X (discussionitem_icon.gif user.gif mail_icon.gif)

There should be no static GIFs on articles. What you put on your user page is up to you. — It's dot com 01:29, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

All right! In that case, I'll convert that pup right away. Thanks for answering me five seconds later. And by the by, I was going to add that I don't have the means to capture that screeny as a PNG file, but I edited the message at the same time that you posted yours - uh...

Update — I tried to capture the image as a GIF file, and the colors got all screwed up for some reason. Man, these people need to test their programs before they post them all over the Internet! So, I resorted to a BMP, just to find that they're freaking blocked! Anyone got advice, or should I just stick with the dithery image? Darth Katana X (discussionitem_icon.gif user.gif mail_icon.gif)

If you'd like, I'll upload a PNG version of the image. Would you like me to just convert the current image, or change it so the rest of the browser window doesn't show? --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 02:04, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks one million, but that's all right! Darth Katana X (discussionitem_icon.gif user.gif mail_icon.gif)

this bites!

In the Wiki Standards page it list the max file size as 100 kb but on this page it states that 153.6 kb is that max, which is it? I R F 12:54, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki will warn you if it's over 153.6, but our standard is 100. Not that I knew that until just now. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 11:19, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Optimizing?

What does "optimizing a picture for the internet" mean and how should I go about doing it when I'm uploading a picture? -Brightstar Shiner 23:27, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Papua New Guinea?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to edit a policy page, so I guess I'll just ask. The link for PNG goes to a page that gives a list of things PNG might be. Graphics is something I actually know about, and I don't think the PNG we're looking for is Papua New Guinea. :) Isn't there a better link? TheGirl 00:40, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

You're absolutely right, TheGirl — I changed the link to the specific page about Portable Network Graphic files. Also, yes, you're allowed to correct things like that on a policy page — go ahead and be bold if you see something that can be improved, and if the change isn't for the better, somebody can always change it back, with no harm done!
