Revision as of 17:00, 20 January 2008
Lappy 486 is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute. |
PINE
Strong Bad's up-to-date email program looks suspiciously like PINE (PINE Is Not Elm). PINE is one of the older old-school email clients on UNIX networks such as university shell accounts.
-- The official acronym for PINE is Program for Internet News and Email.
- I was thinking the same thing. Compare it to this screenshot. Linuxerist L / T 18:11, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Contrast
Do you think that perhaps the contrast knob will be added to the Lappy later on? I mean, maybe they just forgot to put it in. In any case, I liked the contrast thing (although the LCD liquid effect is pretty dang cool).
- Probably not. Most laptops I've seen don't have contrast knobs (though my knowledge of ancient laptops is pretty non-existant). --TheNintenGenius 15:00, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
- I have an ancient laptop... probably closer to a Lappy 286 than a Lappy 486. It has no contrast, but it does have brightness which would basically just make the backlight brighter or darker. Even at its brightest, it's nowhere near bright enough unless all the lights are out. So theoretically this could be added, but I have a feeling they're gonna leave it as just the LCD effect. --jtickle 23:45, 29 Nov 204 (EST)
- I've used several laptops, and I have never seen a contrast setting on any of them. I think it's a setting specific to the electron guns used in CRT monitors. --oddtodd 00:10, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)
- Perhaps more relevent, the original Gateway Colorbook had a 486, color screen, and a contrast knob which had the interesting property of being able to invert the color like a photographic negative if you went too far in the wrong direction. --Anonymous
- I, too, really like the LCD effect when I click on Lappy's screen. Probably because I imagine SB has to clean all those "fingerprints!" -- anonymous lurker 12:14, 13 Dec (PST

- I personally don't think that TBC will bother adding contrast knobs. I mean, what realy purpose were they in the first place besides finding "glitches" when there was a cut scene? -Tony Stony 11:05, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
OS Inspiration
I know I can't be the only one to see parallels between the Lappy 486's logo and that of Mac OS 8. Even the startup sound seems rather Mac-inspired. --codeman38 21:56, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
Compy 386 was also mac-inspired. See e-mail "big white face" when Strong Mad runs "b/w" (You can see the Apple logo in the upper-left corner, as well as various other design similarities.) Also, The Cheat's computer is obviously an iMac.
- Oh, yeah, it's definitely Mac-inspired.—StrongstarRunbad 14:53, 9 Dec 2004 (MST)
The prompt seems to be from Apple DOS, unless there's another OS with a "]" prompt. 68.163.147.134 23:48, 18 Dec 2004 (MST)
Lappy outer logo
Can anyone get a shot of the Lappy outer logo? When Strong Bad carries it in his fist blocks it.
- I'm working on it, as you can see from this image. Also, if you wanted a screenshot of the logo that Strong Bad's head blocks when we first see the logo on screen, that image is here. Even if I'm able to cut Strong Bad out from the screenshot of the ORIGINAL FRAME, the image quality will not be too high. Better to leave it small such as this thumbnail. Hope this was helpful.

Fun Facts moved from STUFF
Lappy Startup Screen
The Lappy's boot-up process-- including the sound, the icon, and the logo text-- is very reminiscent of that of Mac OS 8. --codeman38 21:51, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
- Decline. This is already noted in the Fun Facts page of the toon. -- RPharazon
- Rewrite. If it's already noted, this version isn't quite accurate. The Mac startup sound is coded into the hardware, and has been for quite a while. The sound and icon, however, are part of the Mac OS. If you have a Mac, try starting it up using Linux - the sound is the same, but the screen is different. --oddtodd
- Shorten and Rewrite. Same as above. --The Somewhat Awesome Jesty 04:15, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)
- Comment. This has been up awhile, and while it appears that a rewrite is needed, no one has proposed one. Perhaps someone could do that? --MadEwokHerd 16:03, 30 Dec 2004 (MST)
- Move it. This goes on the Lappy page! --Pianoplayerontheroof
- STRONGLY DECLINE! The Mac bootup sound plays before any display shows, and System 8's loading screen does not have any fadein effects. Furthermore, the Mac OS 8 is only two colors, not four. --Aussie Evil 13:58, 7 Mar 2005 (MST) (sorry, forgot to sign)
- Comment, Post-STUFF Mac OS 8 was in full color, though it did still retain System 7's grayscale capabilities. --TheEggman 01:16, 10 Mar 2005 (MST)
- Decline --Tony Stony 11:07, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
DELETED!!!
So, I've been think about the "DELETED" picture for the Lappy might be equal to the one in replacement, maybe.--oopsyoubwokeit 15:58, 28 Mar 2005 (MST)
- Except, of course, it still says DELETED!! Mee
Colors
Does the explosion in "do over" count as more colors we have seen the lappy create? or not?
- There should at least some note that it can display what seems to be an animated gif. --151.204.128.79 01:07, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I think it should. Though there are little dots of green and blue in it (If you print screen, you don't even have to zoom in) I put in Maroon, brown, light brown, and beige. I think those are the main colors, buyt if anyone disagrees, please say so.
- It's not going to be very easy to get every single color in the explosion. I think "The explosion in do over" would work, but not every color. —FireBird|Talk 15:53, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- I agree, so I think those four will do (Plus white, but it's already on the list) We at least should use brown and light brown, but maroon and beige should also be noted. If it's shown on the Lappy, then it should be noted. - Ju Ju Master 17:15, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)
I think we should ditch the section and note that, while mostly based on CGA graphics, it seems to also be able to display VGA. --Shadow Hog 17:22, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Even though I like the section, Shaodw Hog might be right.. Ju Ju Master
And it would definately take a lot of color for the webcam. Seek Bar
So that would be SVGA, as a 486 computer with the specifications os Strong Bad's laptop seems to hold up to 256 colors. - 20eric06 logged off
Also, I found out that VGA supports 256 colors, but only with twakening. I'm only warning that in case that anyone tells me that. -201.48.50.180 04:18, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Plug In Wall
- Why is there still a plug in the wall that is still occupied. in email part-time job we see there is nothing on the back to plug in a wall.whats up with that? (audience laughs)
- Laptops can run on either external power (with a plug) or internal power (battery). Username-talk 21:58, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)
- With the lappy's 5 minute battery life it needs to be plugged in all the time.
Picture spacing
All the pictures on this page are giving it some very odd spacing... It looks kinda awful, an' I don't quite know how to fix it. Any one better at coding wanna take a crack at it? Or should we just jump right to a gallery? --DorianGray
486 Insparation
I had just thought of something. Do you think that the Lappy's number is a cross between the Compy's and Tandy's. Think about it: Tandy 400 and Compy 386. Maggot Man 23:20, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- From Lappy 486#The Real Computer:
The 486 was actually a real processor made by Intel. It was quite similar to the 386 processor from a software standpoint, but was considerably faster.
- See also Compy 386#The Real Computer and Tandy 400#The Real Computer. -- Tom 23:23, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Looks like one of those old heavy Zenith 386 laptops, or a Compaq LTE 5380.--67.161.122.193 05:02, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
More Colors or No Colors
I'm not a member, I hope you all don't mind. I saw a discussion about the explosion's colors, but I also wanted to note that in the SBemail death metal Strong Bad has a video chat with Larry Palarochini, the Video Thyme uses far more colors than the explosion, and having to note all possible colors would eventually result in it no long being as much 'several' colors. I do believe that the section on 'Colors' in the Lappy article could be removed.
- The video chat and the explosion are covered under "Video colours". --DorianGray
- Oh! I'm sorry, I had overlooked that, just ignore this then... - Same person as above
- No problem. I overlook stuff all the time. =) --DorianGray
- I agree with Anonny; the colours section is unbecoming. While it's true that the female lappy 486 icon displays in just ~4 colours (cyan, magenta, yellow, red), look closer. She's actually anti-aliased with several shades of those colours, in individual pixels. Enough shades to upgrade the computer at least to 256-colour VGA status. 154.5.22.109 03:54, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- I also think it's pointless. "Video colors" is hardly a single color. There's simply too many. - Joshua 19:10, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- I also agree. But maybe insted of a complete list of colors, a little something on the technical aspects of the screen? Like an explanation on the 256 VGA mentioned above. — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:30, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Merged from Female Lappy 486
I got rid of the below:
== Quick Facts == *The Female Lappy looks to be inspired by the movie "War Games" in which a talking computer would greet and interact with its user, David.
It's not at all unique to War Games. What aboot 2001: A Space Oddysey, or, Knight Rider? Point is, a computer that talks to the user isn't a reference to any specific thing. --beanluc 14:29, 10 Jan 2005 (MST)
I wouldn't know. I've never seen the movie. But if the talking computer in War Games has blonde hair and a female face, I think it can be considered a valid reference. :)
Female Lappy 486 is the first hrwiki page I've ever created. *treasures it somehow* --mathgrant
Many combolations, Elizimath. ---Bellatrix
Merge with Lappy 486
I think the female persona has become established to the point that it is a true part of the Lappy. I therefore don't see the need for two pages on the subject. — It's dot com 00:15, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
LCD Liquid...scroll buttons?
Has anyone noticed that when you click the scroll bar(and buttons) on the 'Denny's Menu' area it makes the LCD effect? It's almost like the scroll buttons are actually on the screen and you have to exert force with your finger to make it scroll down. -- Abelhawk 20:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Female Lappy sounds like Michael Jackson?
Hi,
Does anyone else think that the Female Lappy sounds like Michael Jackson?
This doesn't need to actually be added to the trivia or facts on the Wiki, it's just funny to me...--128.120.173.80 14:49, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- Umm, No, no-ho-ho! No, no, no. No, Anonny, no. No. {glares} No, it doesn't. DeFender1031 14:53, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Latest version of Glitch0
Apparently, the Lappy's font also contains letters with accent marks and a tilde (~). SOMEBODY besides the Brothers Chaps should have the latest version of the font, right? 'Cause some of the characters in the version I downloaded are just plain squares. --66.82.9.110 03:44, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe they're custom. --DorianGray 03:53, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

so, what display might the lappy use? CGA seems unlikely given the colors lappy has used... Poopskin, the 2nd Human Wedgie™ 16:56, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
