HRWiki talk:2011 Server Move

Please list any problems you encounter below. Note: there is a known bug, but we don't know exactly where it's going to turn up. It's a secret to everybody! If you find it (you'll get an internal error), please list exactly what you were doing and how to re-create the bug. Thanks. — It's dot com 07:42, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

is this going to be identified as a 500 error? like, it won't be a 403 or 404 error? The Knights Who Say Ni 16:01, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
It likely won't be a server error like that. Instead it will be a "MediaWiki internal error" (you'll probably see those exact words). What the rest of the page look like depends on where the error is. For instance, I've seen the error keep a page from rendering at all, but I've also seen it allow most of the page to be displayed (logo and tabs and navigation and such) with the error being contained in the article area. You might also see a PHP error along the top of the screen. If I had to place my bets where this is likely to show up, I'd guess when someone tries to upload an image or create an account. — It's dot com 16:23, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Blank autocolumn sections

I am not sure if this is what is what you where talking about but the full list of Strong Bad Emails on said page is now blank for me. --Happypasta 03:25, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, it appears that <autocolumn> functionality is bloke. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 04:11, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Fixed. — It's dot com 04:48, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Forum Login

Each time I visit the forum, I am forced to log in, even if I check the "log in automatically" box (which I always do and have done). Never seen it behave like that before, so I'm guessing it's move-related despite not being part of the wiki. --DorianGray 04:54, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

I concur. In fact, I'm having trouble logging in period. I have to enter my password over and over to log in (and I'm [sic] know I have it right). Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 05:10, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
This is a known issue. If possible, please put forum issues in the designated thread. — It's dot com 05:22, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Slowness

In general, everything on this website has been a lot slower than it used to be for me. This was especially true the first time I got on since the move - it took at least a minute instead of a few seconds. Also, I once tried to save an edit (on Stinkoman 20X6 Source Files), then I scrolled back to the top while it was loading and opened this page in a new tab. Neither page would load. A few seconds after the page I was saving an edit on went blank (as opposed to still showing the content of the page I had been on), I went to the other tab and closed it. Suddenly the edit I was trying to save loaded. As I am making this note, I had a similar problem where I tried to open my preferences in a new tab and it took 10-20 seconds to load as opposed to the normal 1-2 seconds. Is this going to continue happening or is this slowness temporary? Thanks! Oxguy3 21:50, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

The speed of this server has varied wildly; sometimes it's much faster than the old server, other times much slower. It's only the second day since it went live, and we're still optimizing settings, so it's still too early to guess what's it's going to be like long-term. Also keep in mind that, in order to keep server costs down, we may have to make some tradeoffs. — It's dot com 22:57, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
This deserves to be brought up again. It's not just slow, it's painfully slow. This is the kind of slow that you get with dial-up while a Denial of Service attack is going on. I mean, seriously. What's really going on? Are there really that many changes to make to get it up to speed? Not even Titanic was this slow! MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 03:28, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
Wow. What in the world makes you think you have the right to be so rude? That's not a rhetorical question by the way; I really want to know. — It's dot com 04:31, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Subtitles

Local subtitles viewer is not working or being recognized. I was able to find it in Google cache, when my browser (not the one i normally use) gave me a back door to a dated version of whatever toon i wanted to watch. Is there any way to do something about that? The Knights Who Say Ni 03:41, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Whoops. Fixed. — It's dot com 05:44, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Userboxes

moved from HRWiki talk:Userboxes

Does anyone know where the userboxes went? I coulda sworn they were here. Where they taken down for a reason? Are they on another article? Or was this an act of vandalism? SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER. BubsHeadStand 18:22, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Fixed. — It's dot com 20:55, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Div Class Usermessage

I don't know if it particularly pertains to this server, but it's been going on ever since the move was announced. It appears as though the usermessage class is now blue instead of the traditional yellow. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 21:35, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't see what you mean. Please upload a screenshot of what you're seeing. — It's dot com 21:39, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't really see anything different, either. It still seems yellow/orange to me. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 22:19, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Your user CSS is set to make it blue. --phlip TC 22:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Noted and fixed. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 22:24, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Mobile Browser Support?

I tried to view an HRWiki article on my Zune HD today, and it can no longer display the page correctly- the left navigation pane is way down at the bottom of the page, some of the pictures (the .gifs, I think) aren't displayed, and none of the flash elements (like the animation in the top-left corner) is displayed. Granted, the Zune HD's web browser is functionally equivalent to the much-outdated IE6 (if it's not the exact same browser, like people say), but I think it should be noted that at least one mobile browser doesn't display this site's contents correctly.

I suspect this is an issue with the new server, because I could browse HRWiki.org on the same device with no problems before the change.

On the plus side, the broken-looking pages load about 10 times faster than they did before :P

I'm not sure what could be causing the difference for you. Nothing in the layout or formatting of the wiki has changed. All of the IE specific stylesheet workarounds are still in place. Are you sure both .gifs and Flash content aren't displayed? Is that something that normally should work? Is there any way to make sure your cache has been cleared? Or that your settings haven't changed? Is there a way to provide us with a screenshot of what you're seeing? -- Tom 03:38, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
