[edit] Same as steak knife?
What I'm wondering is if the 'big knife' is the same thing as the 'rusty old steak knife' (if i remember correctly) that Homestar planned to give to Coach Z on the Homestar Presents: Presents toon. Could it be? ~Bii 10:54, 11 Mar 2005 (MST)
- I just checked. It's not the same knife. The one in Homestar Presents: Presents is just a rusty steak knife. Nothing Big about it. -- Tom 17:58, 12 Mar 2005 (MST)
[edit] Per the discussion elsewhere...
This is from the STUFF discussion over on alternate universe, which seems to have turned into a debate about whether the Big Knife in that email is a reference to the Big Knife shown in the Painting of a guy with a big knife from i love you. Here's what I said there:
- I think what we should decide here is whether or not the Big Knife article refers to big knives in general (which I'm all for), or the specific Big Knife that the "Guy Holding a Big Knife" painting in i love you is holding. If we decide that the article is about Big Knives, I think we should rename the article as such and make it more general (as a running theme/gag). Then ALL of the references to Big Knife that we've previously debated would be valid.
So I propose that we rename this article to Big Knives and reword it such that it includes references to big knives that are not THE Big Knife. There's enough variance in the knives shown in various toons to warrant this, methinks. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 05:54, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed. Brilliant idea. — Bassbone (TALK CONT) 06:00, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- After further thought, I decided to undo the name change. "The" Big Knife is indeed a single, unique object, so this article should pertain to that. HOWEVER: There's no reason why this article can't ALSO talk about other Big Knives that are similar to "THE" Big Knife. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 06:52, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- And after even more thought and a little more discussion on the STUFF page for alternate universe, I've reformatted the article and reworked it to remove references to "The Big Knife", so that the article is about Big Knives and related knives.
- The only fuzzy point on this is what to do with cases where ordinary knives are used in perfectly ordinary ways. The example that comes to mind is Where's The Cheat?, where Homestar uses a regular knife to prepare a sandwich. Does that merit a mention on this page? — KieferSkunk (talk) — 07:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Another question: Now that this article has been generalized to talk about Big Knives in general, should it be renamed to "Big Knives" like I originally did and then reverted? Would seem to make more sense now. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 07:23, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- How about "Knives" - that way we can include the bedtime story one too? - Qermaq - (T/C) 09:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Dot com's comment in Talk:alternate universe - it should probably remain "Big Knife" or "Big Knives", until/unless we get a lot of little knives popping up as running jokes. Like I mentioned above, I don't think Homestar's use of the regular table knife in Where's The Cheat? counts, as it's a perfectly ordinary use of a knife. Whereas the common theme behind "big knives" seems to be people holding them for the sake of looking cool. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 19:55, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- Just contradicted myself, I know, but I went ahead and added Where's The Cheat? to the list. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:54, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bedtime Story
Does changing the name of this article to "Big Knives" negate the restriction on the knife in Bedtime story? (sign your posts) (I need a post-it on my monitor reminding me of that)— Bassbone (TALK CONT) 07:12, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I believe so. I went ahead and added it back in. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 06:24, 15 April 2006 (UTC)- Actually, now that I go read the discussion on Talk:bedtime story, I think we should debate it again. That knife is quite small and indistinct, and there's not really enough detail in it to qualify it as a "Big Knife", by the precedent set in i love you. For the time being, I've commented-out the reference in this article, until we can come to a consensus. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 07:04, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- Under the new "rules" I wrote up defining what a "Big Knife" is, I decided to put The Cheat's knife from this email under "Other Knives". It's currently the only item there, but that's pending more reference-hunting. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 07:21, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
