[edit] This should stay

I don't agree with the deletion of this template. "Tick" isn't semantic. I know that won't make sense to many of you. What if in the future the check mark is turned into a thumbs-up or something? I realize it's unlikely, but in that event the word "tick" wouldn't make sense anymore, but the word "done" would still be relevant. If anyone has coded in XHTML or CSS you know the importance of semantics. The XHTML spec has em instead of i because some people want to "emphasize" their stuff with something other than "italics". Am I making any sense here? My point is that "done" is semantic while "tick" is not. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:39, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't think it realy metter, but if you and everyone else want to keep this, then we should get rid of tick. The point is that there shouldn't be two things that are the practically the same. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:44, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
Maybe we could come up with a better name than "done". I can think of several instances where I would want to "tick" things off (no pun intended), like in a list, but those things aren't necessarily "done". — It's dot com 20:01, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
If I had to choose between the two, I guess I like the name "done" better. Oh, and it's interesting to note that things like book titles are italicized and not emphasized. -- Tom 20:05, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
No, things like book titles are cited (with an XHTML cite tag), and depending on the accepted standard in your neck of the woods, that could mean the title is italicized, underlined, or simply put in quotes. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:13, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
I think the problem with naming it for its use, rather than what it is, is that it has several uses. If we have to have just one, how about {{check}}? It describes the mark, and also conveys a sense of accomplishment. — It's dot com 20:10, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
I agree with once-and-only-once, but this has gone on for several months without complaint. I don't understand why all of a sudden it's a big deal. At any rate, if enough people really want this deleted, I don't mind switching to the more widely adopted standard of "tick" even though I think "done" is more semantically appropriate. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:13, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
I personally see no problem with having both "tick" and "done". I completely agree with JoeyDay's initial comment and possible scenario. --Stux 20:31, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
Unless and until someone else has a problem with this template, I'm removing the TBD tags. — It's dot com 23:35, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
I don't think it really matters, I don't think it's a big deal that the definition of "tick" might change, but I think we should have one or the other. I would prefer "tick" (that's what most people I know call it), but, I think it's called a "check mark" in USA (am I right?), so, maybe it's better to have "done", which means "done" in any English-speaking part of the world. «Rob» 06:09, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Both of these templates are actively being used. They mean different things semantically. There's no good reason to force users of one to switch to the other one. The fact that they look the same is immaterial. To insist on having one or the other is pedantic. I'm not suggesting that we go crazy with duplicate templates, but we are flexible enough in this case to have both. — It's dot com 06:22, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
I kinda agree with you, but, we really don't have any reason to have both. I'm sure the users using the other template won't mind using this one, and it's not many pages to change if we want to use the new one. «Rob» 08:27, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
The reasons we have to keep both are the ones It's dot com just mentioned. 1. Both of these templates are actively being used. 2. They mean different things semantically. 3. There's no good reason to force users of one to switch to the other one. -- Tom 14:00, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New "Todo" template.

I've updated the image used in this template and added a new Template:todo. Here's an example of how you might use them:

Done Jump over the candle stick
Done Go up the hill to fetch a pail of water
To do Go to the market for roast beef
To do Kiss a frog

Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions for improvements. Thanks. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:02, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Two words: sah-weet! --Stux 19:14, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Much better. Now {{tick}} and done clearly differenciate. — Lapper (talk) 03:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
