HRWiki:Changing username
From Homestar Runner Wiki
HRW:CU
The user name users choose for themselves is not set in stone. On request, bureaucrats can change user account settings and article histories such that all previous edits of a given user are attributed to the new name using Special:Renameuser. Note: You must make the request from the account you want renamed; anonymous requests (except users whose usernames begin with a lowercase letter and therefore cannot log in) are ignored for security reasons.
[edit] Requesting a change
To have your name changed, please make your request on this page. Please follow the procedure carefully or your request will not be fulfilled. With rare exceptions, multiple name-change requests by the same user will not be honored.
[edit] Instructions
- Check if the new name you want does not exist (Special:Listusers). Do not create an account under the new name. (If you already created the new account, don't worry. We can do some stuff and fix it, but it's still recommended that you don't.)
- Sign in with the account that you want renamed.
- Of course, this is not possible if your account has a lowercase first letter. If you can't log in, then skip this step.
- Add your request to the bottom of the section below. Use the following template:
{{renameuser|Old username|New username}}
- Once your request is dealt with, all edits from your old account will be reattributed to your new account.
- Move and redirect your user page and talk page to the new name if it has not already been done.

[edit] Peter222
I don't really like my username. To many 2's. If you get rid of one it'll bother me less. Thank you.-Peter
- On your user page, you state "I also despise my username", which says to me that you would not want to be stuck with Peter22. In order to avoid having to change your name a second time, I'm just going to wait till you come up with something you like as opposed to something that doesn't bother you as much. — It's dot com 03:53, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- The excessive two's are the only reasons I dislike it. If I have one less I'd be fine with it and probably wouldn't change it again. Peter22 would not bother me at all.-Peter
- That's not what you said above. Your signature is just "Peter", so how about that? — It's dot com 04:16, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Um, wrong page. Try HRWiki:Signature. That was written when this looked like a simple request for a sig, but I don't know that putting in all the periods really helps anything. --Jay (Gobble) 19:21, 27 April 2009 (UTC)- Yeah, this is for changing the actual username. For what comes up when you type "~~~~", then you can ask anybody, or change it yourself anytime. But only Bureaucrats can change your username. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 19:32, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, Mr. I Can't Get A Good Username Here, instead of adding periods to your name, why don't we come up with a good username for you instead. Having to enter all those periods when you log in or when someone mentions you by name would probably get real old real fast. — It's dot com 19:29, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- Okay how about The Username Searcher? User:MICGAGUH
- MICGAGUH, you have the opportunity to think for a while about your username, and you should take this opportunity to do that. You don't have to have a username that implies you can't get a good username. Unless that's what you really want, in which case, I can't change it. But say so and a Bureaucrat will. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 15:16, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

- There's no need to fix it en masse, especially since this was less of a name change and more of just a style change. Better and easier to just let the redirect do its thing. — It's dot com 22:35, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

- Hey, DC, no matter what I do, it still keeps logging me in as "Homestar-winner" in Firefox. If it isn't too much trouble, could you maybe change my user name back to "Homestar-winner" so I can start editing in Firefox again? That has been the reason why I haven't made many edits lately... Homestar-Winner (talk) 16:08, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- Instead of just treating the symptom, I think we should try to figure out what the problem is instead. Close all Firefox tabs except for a blank one. Go to Tools > Clear Recent History. Choose Everything from the drop-down menu and make sure all the checkboxes are checked. Then press Clear Now. Close Firefox, and for good measure restart your computer. About two years ago, I had my name changed so it would reflect my HRFWiki username, however, I had no idea the accounts would be linked after the purge and I'd have no access to my previous one there, and my current one isn't really appropriate for the fanstuff wiki and may cause confusion. So when you get back, could it be possible for you to rename my new cross-account to JCM, so it could be more recognizable to both sides from now on? I promise I won't bother you anymore after this. [edit] Fotoshop
When I signed up for an account at the Homestar Runner Wiki, my username "Fotoshop" was three years old. Now it is five.
While the phonetic source is obvious, the origin of the name, per se, is not. I formulated the username when I was in the third grade, for a Club Penguin account, as a roundabout means of bragging about my (rudimentary) skills with Photoshop. Of course, nobody who played Club Penguin knew what Photoshop was. As my devotion to Club Penguin declined, I began to use the name "Fotoshop" for other websites. Almost immediately, "Fotoshop" became my main handle. However, as I veered away from Photoshop and toward the open-source GIMP, and began to realize the utter simplicity and uncleverness of the username, "Fotoshop" began to seem less appealing and relevant. I began to despise the name.
I proceeded to experiment with other usernames when I finally settled on "Fuchsiania", the name of one of five hundred achievements in a Flash game of mine. I choose this name because 1) it's a portmanteau (I like those), 2) it's relevant, as I mentioned earlier, 3) it begins with the same letter as "Fotoshop", softening the transition, as I find that many people tend to associate by initials, and 4) it's easier to form a consistent visual identity than Fotoshop.
Now, I ask, can you please change my username on both the wiki and the forum to Fuchsiania, if you may be so kind?
Thank you in advance,
Fotoshop — 04:24, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Just one question: how do you pronounce it? Okay, actually two questions: it's a portmanteau of fuchsia and what? — It's dot com 19:16, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you, thank you! It's pronounced [fjuʃieɪniɐ], essentially the first syllable of "fuchsia" ("fyoosh") concatenated with "i" ("ee"), followed by "ania" ("ania" >_>). It's a portmanteau of Fuchsia and mania. Pardon me if my writing is unclear; I'm still a bit delirious with excitement (OMG, It's dot com wrote to me!). Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you very, very much, fuchsiania!

- For what? I'm not very inclined to change your name to "Seriously386" because it's very similar to other usernames. (If you tried to create a new account with that name, the system wouldn't let you.) So I'm making a suggestion for something that is unique and pronounceable, with the benefit that it references your current name so it's easy to keep track of the change. — It's dot com 01:25, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

- I don't know what that means, so I guess not. — It's dot com 03:27, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- By "established" he means that YOU, as a user on this wiki, have made enough edits and have developed enough of a personality under your current name that anything which doesn't imply a connection to your current name would confuse other users. For the record, I kinda like the name "Garbles". — Defender1031*Talk 03:43, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

- I'm not sure what word you're thinking of (portmanteau maybe?), but garble means "to mix up ... to such an extent as to make ... incomprehensible." "Gfdgsgxgzgdrc" is a bunch of letters garbled together. — It's dot com 00:39, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- OH okay I get it now. But still I like the name "Jorb386" better than my old username. AND I never actually tried to pronounce my username, but if I had to pronounce it, It would prolly sound like "guff-duh-guzz-guh-xuh-guh-zuh-guh-derk". PLEASE change my name to Jorb386. I wont edit until atleast someone does. -- Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 01:45, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- You shouldn't give an ultimatum if you don't want your bluff called. The problem I have with Jorb386 is almost identical to the one I have with Seriously386. You're basically taking a name that's already been registered and slapping a number on it. There's a reason the system won't let you do that (names should be unique). How about "Gfgdrc" or "Gfdrc386"? — It's dot com 01:58, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- Or groovepossum? Sorry, But that's already the name of my forum account. -- Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 02:52, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- Already the name of your forum account? You registered it last night. I've changed it to Gfdgsgxgzgdrc to match your wiki account. — It's dot com 03:04, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

- If you like "established" names, How about "Rasmoh"? Is that established enough? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 03:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Then let's stay with the one you have. You've become rather established under it. — It's dot com 03:05, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- I don't really like that name. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 02:58, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Nah. How about "Garbles"? That's how I already pronounce "Gfdgsgxgzgdrc". — It's dot com 02:56, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- How 'bout "Jorb386"? -- Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 02:43, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] What-eez-it-stwong-bayad
My current username is way too long.
- "Homsar" already exists as a user, and is pretty generic as a Homestar Runner Wiki user name besides. --Jay (Gobble) 08:54, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- In fact, I'm pretty sure we have a rule against naming yourself after the main characters specifically. --DorianGray 08:56, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Will this be okay? Even though he is a character he is minor. Also even though it is 14 characters long it's easier to type. — What-eez-it-stwong-bayad (Talk | contribs) 17:57, 21 March 2012 (UTC) (left unsigned)
- How about just "What-eez-it"? It's close too your current name and not too long. — Defender1031*Talk 18:15, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] The For Real Deal
As cool as my username is, I'd like for it to be paharwell, which is the username I use pretty much everywhere else on yon Internets. So, for consistency's sake, I will let this one go. You know what they say, if you love a username, set it free... The For Real Deal 22:14, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
P.S. Oh yeah. Seems I saw something about usernames having to start with a capital letter? If so, that's cool. Paharwell will work just fine. Thanks a mil!
- Done (and yes, it must be capitalized). — It's dot com 03:55, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, sir. :) Paharwell 08:53, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
[edit] Jdaniels15
I was a little hasty in picking my username. I didn't check the username and sig policies first. DeFender informed me that I must use my actual username in my sig, instead of a "handle" like I do in other wikis. I would like to be ToaJuaraevo01. ToaJuaraevo01 17:53, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

[edit] EXDigimat
Hello, I would like to use "Digimat" instead of "EXDigimat". Thanks
- There's no user by either of those names. RickTommy (edits) 11:49, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Rick. I am sure there is. I entered eXDigimat but whenever I log in, it is EXDigimat. Shall I just create a new user with the correct name? thanks
- It looks like you created an account with Wikipedia two days ago. This is not Wikipedia, and you have not created an account with us yet. Actually, it looks like you have already made your suggestion in the right place over there. It's not the first time someone has come here looking to change their Wikipedia user name. The Knights Who Say Ni 14:40, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- By the way, the reason you had a problem in the first place is that MediaWiki (the software that both Wikipedia and this wiki run on) does not allow usernames to begin with a lowercase letter. — It's dot com 02:47, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

[edit] Ninhead629
I want my friends to find this page, since I've changed my other user names to fit it, too. I mainly think that the mashup of all the letters and numbers is difficult to read and that my new name has a better flow to it. Thanks for your help.
