New editing problems

How do you create blockquote SBEMAIL styles? And Tables?

For tables, look here as linked in the article. For the email styles, click "Edit" on an email page to see how it was done:

That example link to "The weather in London" is causing no end of pain as clueless people and trolls actually attempt to make the page. I don't think it's to big of a problem, seeing as how deleting it isn't extremely difficult, but I see where you're coming from. Would putting some <!-- invisible --> action work in there without actually creating the page? —FireBird|Talk 22:47, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Nope, to put a comment in there the page would have to be created and the link would turn blue here. I vote for the Fake link plan, with a comment in the source of this page explaining it (like was done with the headings). But then again, it might give people the wrong idea, that you can't actually click on the red links, just the blue ones. Hmm... The reason that link is like that is because we want it to be an exact example. Fooling people isn't a good way to teach them something. "Oh, so when I see red text that's underlined it's a new page that hasn't been made yet. Okay, but when I try to click on it nothing happens. What's up with that?" Same thing with protecting it. Same thing with anything other than what we currently do. Having to delete the page every once in a while is perfectly fine. Heck, it even shows that people are actually reading the instructions. -- Tom 02:49, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Picture Text

On my user page, I'm trying to get the words "One of My Favorite Game Consoles" underneath a picture of a Nintendo DS and the picture appears, but it has no words under it. Can someone help?? --~Rebecca~ RJMT 20:32, 4 Aug 2005 (UTC)

The easiest way is to include thumb as one of the attributes, plus a few other things. See your page for the adjustment I made. See also my talk page for a more lengthy explanation, plus links to way more info than you probably need. I'll go ahead and explain it better here:

• thumb – Makes the image a thumbnail, and includes the caption.
• none – Makes it so the text does not flow around the image. Other choices for alignment are left, center, and right.
• 300px – Specifies the width of the image.

I changed it a second time. Check your page history, and revert if necessary. This time, I moved the picture to the top of the section and made it a normal thumbnail (I took out the none and width attributes. Then, I inserted a special line (<br style="clear:both">) to keep the next section from starting too soon. — It's dot com 20:57, 4 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Boxy Thing

All these "newline"s

It's really two words isn't it? "New line" appears several times all squooshed into "newline". I'm not going to try to edit the edit page which I went to for help editing. But it was bothering me. Tracey

That's good careful reading, but you shouldn't be bothered. In computing, newline is essentially the name for the character that is input when you press Enter, and it has a different meaning from the phrase "new line." Changing an image's size

exacly how do i do that because if you look at my user page you can see that the right h*r logo is not totally by the edge. so i need to make the picture of the cheat smaller. can you tell me how to do this?

Well, first let me say that you need to sign your comments, especially if you want people to find your page. It's easy: just type four tildes (like this: ~~~~), and the system will do the rest. To resize your image, you need to add a width, in pixels, to the image link. I found that 160 pixels was about as big as you could go, but you could go smaller, too. No edit section question

I saw "__NOEDITSECTION__" in an article. What does this do, and why can't I just edit it out?

NOEDITSECTION does exactly what it says on the tin. It removes the edit links from sections, such as this one. If it was on a page then it's probably there for a good reason. You can read more about this (and other magic words) here. Which article was it on? --ENUSY 02:04, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Like Venusy just said: it takes out all the section [edit] links from the page. You can only edit the page from the edit tab at the top of the page. This is usually done for aesthetic purposes where having the edit links would make the page look bad. Like Venusy said, usually if they are there, they are there for a reason and should not be taken out. --Stux 04:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Technical issue re: ALT and caption

According to the page, it will "render alternate text when not displaying an image" - but it renders this text when it does display the image. In other words, the captioning duplicates the alt, so when reading in a text browser one sees the text twice. Example 1, Example 2. So the real value of the alt attribute is wasted.

Is there a way to indicate a separate alt value that differs from the caption? Is that even possible in this system? And if not, how would one propose this? - Qermaq - (^T/C)  03:13, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

At the current time, no, there is not a way to indicate a separate alt value. This is a known bug, and you can follow its status at MediaZilla:368. -- Tom 01:34, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Links to media and stuff

Regarding this edit, I've noticed that the sounds we have are all in the Image namespace, my guess is that all files will default to the Image namespace and I think there's no way to make it stay in the media: namespace, thus making that snippet of documentation unnecessary. Otherwise, are we going to implement the use of the Media namespace and move all .ogg files there? --Stux 16:29, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

The "Image" namespace is a misnomer... a holdover (I assume) from when images were the only files that could be uploaded. The actual difference between the Image and Media namespaces is that Image:Stinkoman.ogg links to a file description page, which has a description, the upload history, Whatlinkshere, and, in the case of images, a preview of the image. Media:Stinkoman.ogg, on the other hand, links directly to the file itself. The former is more appropriate for images, since people will want to see them in the browser, but the latter is more appropriate for other files, since people will have to download the files to use them. MW bug 44 (an oldie) deals with the misnomer of the namespaces. --phlip ^T_C 14:38, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

ISBN Links

Not sure if they're used anywhere but the isbn links should either be removed from this page or hopefully fixed. My guesses were that Mediawiki:booksources-isbn or Mediawiki:isbn would have something to do with it, but now I'm not so sure. In any case, if ISBN or RFC links are used then templates would provide a better and cleaner solution. --Stux 17:44, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
