They're GIFs(eggs) that are replaced with different GIFs(birds,dinosaurs,dragons,etc.) on a certain date.

When they hatch i replace them with the new GIF.

:Eguy, one quick thing: the image you're having people put on their talk pages, [[:Image:Yoshi Egg.GIF]], is a personal image of [[User:Yoshi King|another user]]. So, if you're planning to "hatch it" (i.e., upload a new version on April 15), you should re-upload the original file now under a new name, claim it as your personal image, and "hatch" that one instead when April 15 comes around.
