[edit] Examples

Hey, what about adding an "example" column or section for each of the commands like:

Suppose you want to register your username "MyGreatUsername" (spaces are not allowed) with the password "secret". Log in as "MyGreatUsername". To register type:
/msg nickserv register secret
Every time you log back in your must type:
/msg nickserv identify secret
Depending on what chat program you use, you may program it so that it executes this action automatically every time you log in. If you get disconnected and your nickname is still present, you must first kill your "ghosted" nickname:
/msg nickserv ghost secret
You can then use your registered nickname:
/nick MyGreatUsername
/msg nickserv identify secret
If someone impersonates you or otherwise uses your registered nickname you can get your nickname back with the release and recover commands:
/msg nickserv recover secret
/msg nickserv release secret

The examples are not as critical for chanserv commands. --Stux 20:27, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

I have added the above example. --Stux 02:44, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
Also, a brief discussion, of the /join, /nick, /msg, /me, /quit commands might be useful in this page too. (I have to go do laundry now.) --Stux 01:57, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Help Nav Template?

Oooo... I was just thinking, perhaps a Help Navigation Template and/or a Help Category might be great to make it easy for users to navigate the help and find what they need... ? --Stux 20:32, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

I considered that, but there are so few help pages that all of them can be seen at a glance in Special:Allpages. I'll do it if there's a concensus, though. — Lapper (talk) 20:35, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
I was just gonna add your list of all the help stuff Lapper has made to my post. Yes they are easily accessible from there, but these are Help pages! Generally these are meant for people who generally may still need to know what the Special Pages button is for. For the rest of us... I personally wouldn't have even thought to look there. I think visibility is key. --Stux 20:39, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
I will copy this discussion to Help talk:Contents where it belongs. --Stux 22:12, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Voice Command

What does the Voice Command do? --TheThin 14:25, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

VOICE is a privilege grantable by a user with CMD VOICE (8) access on a specific channel or higher. Its only purpose is the ability to speak in a +m channel without being an operator. It is different from a quiet ban (+q) in that VOICE is a privilege, and a quiet ban is a demotion. — Lapper (talk) 14:36, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Freenode modes

How do you make these happen? Do you type in example: /chanserv t? TheThin 12:26, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

...still no answer... TheThin 18:53, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
People don't answer anymore I guess. I found out NOW. /mode +t /mode +m /mode +anything TheThin 13:58, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Format

How do you change the text color in your message (i.e. from this to this)? --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 21:40, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Move beyond freenode?

Given the recent crazyness, and despite our lack of activity (although I use the log bot all the time), is there any interest and/or drive to move to less hectic servers? (maybe Rizon, OFTC or maybe even Libera?) --Stux 17:15, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Or discord
I have no opinion on moving to a new server since I never use IRC, but here's a link to a similar discussion on creating a Discord server (and keeping IRC around for those who still use it). Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 21:04, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
So it seems that Freenode is killing itself by dumping the old channel and nick registrations. Since freenode as we knew it is no more, what are we going to do? --Stux 06:20, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
I've moved the IRC stuff to Libera.chat, though it might take us a day or so to get everything set back up the way it was. I'm not final on the decision to use just that or also incorporate Discord, but we'll let you know. -- Tom 10:18, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Cool, thanks Tom! For those who may not be aware of recent developments here are some informative links: https://www.devever.net/~hl/freenode_suicide | https://isfreenodedeadyet.com/ . I know that the future chat solutions aren't finalized but I'm glad we have a stopgap in the meantime. I'd also suggest matrix as an alternative although I haven't used that either. But from what I understand it has good bridges to IRC and discord. Either way, thanks again! --Stux 12:29, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
HRWiki:Discord server now exists. -- Tom 06:33, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
Cool! Thanks for setting that up! Now I gotta figure out how to get connected from my 386... --Stux 22:18, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
