[edit] Personal image

Hey there, GuardDuck. Welcome to the wiki! Regarding your personal image, if you're using it, and no one else is, then it's yours, regardless of who actually uploaded it. I need to speak to you, however, about the image you're currently using. The problem is that it's not a free image. The Pearls Before Swine website offers access to strips for about a month after they're released, but after that, you have to pay to see the archives. What this means is that we can't allow the image on our site, as it is definitely not fair use. Sorry. Perhaps there is something else you could use to illustrate your page, but, unfortunately, I'm going to have to delete that image soon. Keep on tranglin', and, again, welcome! — It's dot com 02:35, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

I see, thanks for explaining, and thanks for the welcome. One thing though, I didn't find the image on the Pearls Before Swine website, I found it on a blog I sometimes read. Does this mean it's still illegal? —Guard Duck talk 03:17, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm not a lawyer, but my guess is that either (a) the blog has a legitimate claim to fair use or (b) the blog is using the image illegally. Either way, fair use can't be extended to this site, as we are a wiki about Homestar Runner, not Pearls Before Swine. Hope that helps. — It's dot com 03:32, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
It does. Thanks for your help! —Guard Duck talk 03:35, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Using Show Preview

Hello GuardDuck, I see that you have made several consecutive edits to the same page. I want to point out the Show Preview button. It's right next to the Save Page button when you edit. You should use it whenever you are making a lot of experimental edits, for example when you are trying to get formatting right. Using the Show Preview button is quicker and easier than saving and clicking "edit" again, and will keep recent changes and page histories from being flooded. Thanks, The Goblin!! 23:37, 24 October 2007 (UTC) P.S. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, see this. The Goblin!! 23:37, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Thank you. The reason I didn't use the show preview button on that was because each time I had fixed it, I thought for sure that it was right, meaning I didn't bother to use it. I can see now that it does come in handy. —Guard Duck talk 00:12, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Shoot, I was a couple minutes late in saving that message. Umm.. it's today, now. TheGirl 06:06, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Haiku

Hey! Thanks for the Haiku! And yeah I do wonder about the last Stinkoman Level (er didn't you mean 10?), but with the Halloween Costumes thingy there's a bit of hope. Maybe. Anyway, nice to meet you! Please say hi to Bubsty for me will ya? Later! --Stux 06:53, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! I will. Oh, and speaking of Haikus, I was wondering... should we have a page on them? I've looked and I can't find one, or one on poems, both of which have appeared quite a few times. I'm not sure if they should, or if for some reason you guys decided to never make one... —Guard Duck talk 01:35, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh! Um... that's more of a ... Fan Stuff type thing I'd say. That or a forum thing. Granted, it may be interesting to have such a compilation on a small scale as a wiki project, I know that it wouldn't be a priority, or might balloon to exceeding proportions (as things here sometimes tend to do), thus relegating it to a fanstuff project. That's kinda why is stays as a user space kind of thing. That said, however, there's no reason you or any one of us users can't make a subpage that's a compilation of all the HRWikizens' HR-related poetry. I think. --Stux 02:08, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Oops, sorry for being unclear. What I meant to say was, a page documenting the actual haikus on the Homestarrunner website. Such as "So cool an email, I thought you would enjoy it! Ding dong dear Strong Bad." Those guys. I've noticed quite a few of them. —Guard Duck talk 02:24, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Ohhhhhhh! I see what you mean! Nevermind my senseless diatribe into the user space then. I did a quick google search on the word Haiku and I saw a couple of possibly relevant hits (Halloween Fairstival, japanese cartoon, Talk:Strong Sad's Lament and Foreign Words). I assume you know of more examples than that? Perhaps this may be enough content for a brand spanking new Haiku page? --Stux 03:35, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, I decided to be bold and Create it. Thank you for your help in finding them! —Guard Duck talk 03:55, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No Wrap

I noticed that the words "Guard" and "Duck" in your sig can get split up under some conditions. Putting <span style="white-space: nowrap"> before, and a corresponding </span> after your signature would prevent that from happening. And if you like for your sig to line wrap, pretend I never said anything. =] OptimisticFool 16:31, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Why thank you very much, I'll be sure to do that. —Guard Duck talk 18:13, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
I see you're editing the sandbox to see the effect.. You don't have to get the length just right, just resize your window until your name appears at the end and you'll see it wrap, or not wrap if you've already edited your sig. OptimisticFool 18:20, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
...Wow... I'm... not a very good problem solver I guess. Didn't... think of that... Thanks again! —Guard Duck talk 18:21, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and you keep spelling my name wrong. [1] [2] =] OptimisticFool 18:26, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Rather funny... I noticed that a split second before you wrote that post... well, it's correct on my user page now. —Guard Duck talk 18:28, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] .....

I decided to post here because you abandoned your other account.

[edit] Comic Book Name

You referenced that your name was also taken(stolen) from a comic book like mine was, what was that? Am I just not-hip enough to not know what it's from? As a side note, were you aware of the Videlectrix game Duck Guardian? Is that too many questions? - Opus the Penguin 18:54, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Tsk tsk, am I to believe that there are still souls out there who don't know about Pearls Before Swine, possibly the best comic ever? What a shame. But yeah, it's absolutely hilarious, you should definitely check it out. As for Duck Guardian, I've known about it, but not until now have I made that connection... I should sue Videlectrix for stealing my name :) —Guard Duck talk 22:44, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Wow, I feel pretty bad now. I've read the comic before, but not enough to place a name. I just read some online, it's really good! Definitely need to check it out some more. - Opus the Penguin 02:39, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] IP anony edits

I fail to understand this situation. What is an edit war? Why is it acceptable to have IP anony edits? I thought we were discouraging this due to the complications on the forum when it was locked for some number of weeks in what I call "the fire." I also thought this policy was the result of financial crisis that HRWiki is facing.

I had 2 suggestions about that, by the way.

  1. Ask Congress for a bailout.
  2. Start a wiki on just The Brothers Chaps and any projects they have done, including all things about Homestar Runner.

I figure that the Congressional request wouldn't work out, so the TBC wiki would raise enough funds to keep HRWiki afloat. Your thoughts? --Blow Up the Ocean 05:36, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for not being clear enough on the edit summary. An edit war is basically when a page is consistently reverted based on different users' opinions, (which causes some major Recent Changes cluttering), rather then just taking it to the discussion page. IP Edits are, and have always been accepted, although not as preferred as user edits. While it's discouraged, it doesn't mean that the edits should be reverted. And I think asking Congress for a bailout would be an excellent idea, we all know how essential the wiki is to our nation's growth ;-) —Guard Duck talk 05:41, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your explanation! --Blow Up the Ocean 21:55, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Sig Edit

The edit I made to your sig was made because you forgot to close your <small> and tags. Keep on tranglin', Dagoth 10:23, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Whoopsie. Thanks for your help. —Guard Duck talk 14:45, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Helpful hint

If you want to link to a Category page, you need to put a colon before it:

[[:Category:Running Gags]] will return Category:Running Gags. This will also work for images as well. wbwolf (t | ed) 05:44, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Ah, thank you. I was wondering why that wasn't working. —Guard Duck talk 06:49, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Uploading new images

Hey there, Guard Duck. Nice work straightening those images. Since you're intending to replace the old images, it would be better for you to upload them over the old ones (thus preserving the history), rather than uploading the new ones with new filenames and then us deleting the old ones. For some dumb reason MediaWiki automatically capitalizes the first letter, so you have to watch out for that. You can be sure you're using the same filename by clicking the "Upload a new version of this file" link on a given image page. Thanks! — It's dot com 05:53, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

I went ahead and took care of it for you (giving you proper credit, of course). I renamed the image of the clock Image:It's That CLOCK.PNG, since Image:sbemail40.PNG should serve as the unedited screenshot, while the close-up of the postcard can go on the other pages. Keep on tranglin'! — It's dot com 06:29, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Hey, thanks a lot! Yeah, I was having some issues with the capitalization thing, glad you could take care of it. —Guard Duck talk 07:07, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
