[edit] Macromedia is no more

Guys, Macromedia was bought by Adobe Systems.

So, it should be called Adobe Flash, or something.

Not really. Flash Pro is still called Macromedia Flash on the Adobe website, while the Flash player is now called Adobe Flash. I think it's safe to continue calling it Macromedia Flash. — Loafing 09:35, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Opera 9

Opera 9, the latest release, does not have Flash pre-installed. It's interesting that when you access H*R with Opera 9 without Flash installed, there's no little "download Flash Player" or anything, they ought to do that. But just for future reference - Opera 9 users will need to download the Flash player separately. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:15, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Move?

Propose move to Flash. The program is now owned and supported by Adobe, but "Adobe Flash" is not the name of the program, as far as I can see. It's "Flash" by the company Adobe. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:06, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Qermaq. The software is no longer Macromedia Flash and is no longer proprieted by Macromedia. The flash player is Adobe Flash, but the edit software is just Flash. · · T2|Things 20:58, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I agree. "Flash" is an accurate name, and by using it, we will avoid the whole Macromedia/Adobe discussion. We'll also be safe if Google buys them out ;-) Loafing 21:03, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding revision 726058

In this edit, a sentence was worded a little differently. My initial interpretation of that sentence was that The Brothers Chaps had moved away from Flash 5. Now my first impression has left me intrigued. Who or what says they haven't moved away from Flash 5? I quote from Georgia Tech - 26 Apr 2007 (revision 719695 at time of writing):

MIKE: [...] Um, we use Flash 5, which, I think, they're on Flash 8 now, so the version of Flash we use is about four, four years outdated. Um, for various lazy reasons, mostly, just not wanting to, uh, you know, get used to the minor changes and interface and things like that.
MATT: Well, we definitely work faster. There's, uh, several things that we can do way faster in Flash 5 than we can in 8. Uh, we, we publish everything in Flash 8 because it compresses everything so much more. Like, we'll make a cartoon in Flash 5, and it'll be, like, one and a half megs, and then you put it in Flash 8, and it's 700k or something, so it, it really makes a difference, so, uh, to keep bandwidth under control, we do that sort of thing. [...]

Since they use a later version of Flash to compress the SWF more effectively, and also to embed video, it's more difficult to prove that they've stopped using Flash 5. My question in short is this: Have they moved away from Flash 5, and if so, how can it be proven? Again, just wondering. As always, I'm sorry if some of what I said didn't make any sense. [edit] Newer swf Versions

All swf's versions after April Fool 2014 are way higher, 22 I believe. Could this mean the Chap's have upgraded? This is also seen in "Flash is Dead!", when pieces of Flash fall: they are black. The color of Animate CC. Tell me what you think. Maxmushroom 20:34, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Well, for a long time they refused to upgrade past Flash 5 even when Flash 8 was around. Eventually they started making the toons in Flash 5 and compiling them in Flash 8 and up. And they incorporated some of its new features here and here. So I wouldn't be surprised if they just adapted to the newer versions after a while like everyone else.
Another possibility is that they may have had to abandon their previous computer and equipment, and had to buy a new license to install Flash again. That would force them onto the CC software without a doubt, although Flash is Dead! came out before Animate did. (I have suspected TBC lost some of their files or hardware for a few years now, but that's another story.) -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 22:46, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

[edit] Rename

Due to Flash Player's unfortunate death, Adobe has chosen to move away from the Flash name and the program is now called Adobe Animate. Is a rename in order as this article is about the animation program itself, which is now called Animate? Will it be named "Animate", or move to "Adobe Animate" due to its generic connotation by itself? - Catjaz63 01:21, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

[edit] Move back to Flash

Does anyone else think we should move this page back to Flash? I realize it was given a new name by Adobe, but this is a Homestar Runner Wiki. "Flash" has been referenced by name innumerable times on the site (including at least once after its renaming), and its new name hasn't been mentioned once. I say that at least until the name change has been acknowledged in any way on homestarrunner.com, we should keep it to the easily recognizable Flash. Lira (talk) 12:18, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

I'd have to agree with this. TheThin 13:33, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
Yes. H*R toons weren't built in Animate; they were built in Flash. Given the Chaps' reluctance to upgrade, for all we know they still use Flash (have they mentioned anything to the contrary?). — It's dot com 14:49, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
In addition to the above points, the browser plugin is still referred to as "Adobe Flash Player", despite the updated "Animate" name for the animation program. DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 18:07, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

[edit] Flash CC

In Screenland - 24 Apr 2017 Matt and Mike can be seen using Flash CC (for example, at 21:03). Should this be noted somewhere? Religious Corn   17:28, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, probably. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 01:18, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

[edit] .swf files (most) no longer work on the website. (since 2021)

.swf files no longer work on the website. When we download them, we need to go to the old site. Ideas?

(posted here cuz flash related) — Missile1234 (Talk | contribs) 17:04, 18 January 2021 (UTC) (left unsigned)

The .swf files still exist on the new website, but they've been relocated to new URLs. We'll update those at some point, but until then, you can just download them by clicking the link and downloading it from the 404'd page. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 18:20, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
