::I think the idea here is that in the U.S., the pronunciation "ad-VER-tis-ment" is considered rather snooty when compared to the more common "AD-ver-tize-ment."  It's rarely heard here, and when it is, it's often used by people catering to the upper class with their wares, so, um...I'm getting off-topic.  Anyway, yes, it ''is'' the most common pronunciation in basically every English-speaking country in the world except the U.S., but, um...when has that ever stopped us from making a long-standing joke about other cultures?
