[edit] Weeklies

I was going down the checklist and updating everything for 2021, but then I started asking myself... why archive the Weekly Fanstuff and Sketchbook pages? They'll just be identical to the last ten pages, so what's the point? I feel like this process is merely a leftover remnant of ye olden days of frequent updates. Now that these weeklies are unofficially dead (especially since the buttons don't even work anymore), we should reconsider whether this process is even necessary.

Personally, I think we should take all the weeklies-less weeklies pages and redirect them to Weekly Fanstuff or Sketchbook, depending on the page. Then we can remove those pages from their respective templates (so {{Weekly Fanstuff}} would go ... 2008, 2009, 2014, for example). But that's just one suggestion — does anyone else have any alternatives? Should we continue how we've been doing it, or do something else entirely?

I'd just like to bring attention to this annual change, and ask you all to reconsider whether it should continue this year and beyond. Is this still a good idea, or are we just doing it because that's how it's always been? Because there is a big difference, and I'd like to know the answer. If it's the first one, then we continue as always, and if it's the second one, we can figure something else out. Either way, we should come to a conclusion, instead of simply doing it because we did it before. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 00:46, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Having started a similar conversation here, I agree. RickTommy (edits) 03:27, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
I think the question to answer here is: are the Weekly Fanstuff and Sketchbook still part of the website after the 2021 redesign? If they are we should probably keep going otherwise we can work on shelving the process. --Stux 04:13, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
And the answer to that question is... kind of, sort of, I guess? The buttons are technically still there, but they're no longer functional, and we don't know if they're permanently gone or if this is just a temporary glitch. Either way, I'm not saying we have to shelve the process entirely. If we end up getting a new Sketchbook entry in summer 2025, then a "Sketchbook 2025" page should be created for it, but we shouldn't have to make a new page at the start of every year. Right now, the blank Weekly Fanstuff and Sketchbook pages outnumber the ones with stuff on them, 7–10. I still say these pages should be removed. They have no reason to exist aside from saying "this was not updated this year", which can also be implied through the years' absence on their respective templates. I agree that the yearly weeklies articles don't really need to be made anymore. It's also kinda weird to link past years that have no content in the templates. Perhaps 2010–2013 could be redirected and 2015 on could be deleted? DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 10:57, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, that makes sense, although I don't think deletion is necessary. If we redirect it, then the links (even if they're only found in page history) will still lead somewhere, and the page history will be intact for anyone who goes looking for these pages that once existed. (Plus, redirecting a page is quicker since it doesn't require the approval of a sysop.) Either way, whether the pages are deleted or redirected, I think they should be removed from the navigation templates. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 22:01, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
In my opinion we shouldn't have pages for blank years after the final year of content - that is, we keep 2010-2013 with the "nothing this year" but remove/don't make any pages after 2014. Then a quick note in the lede to specify that there have been no new posts since 2014, as both the WF and Sketchbook pages already use the past-tense ("these were generally updated..."). Since we've long since observed 5 years of 5 years of the homestar doorknocka (and SB quote-tweeting fanstuff seems to be the preferred method of recognizing fan stuff nowadays) I can't imagine 2021 will be the year Weekly Fanstuff updates come roaring back. -- Bleu Ninja 22:25, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
My original intent to my question last year was to see if the Post-Flash Site Update brought back the Weeklies and Sketchbook. I figured that if there was any time to revive those it would be then. I think it is clear that a year into the site update that the features are not coming back. To that end, I've archived those related instructions. I also agree that the old entries and files do not need to be deleted. It's enough to hide them from the template (or perhaps make very small links at the bottom of the template). --Stux 17:54, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Here's a draft of what the top of the Weekly Fanstuff page could look like. I think the best solution, as shown here, is to remove all blank years from the template, instead mentioning their absence in the lede. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 23:17, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Seeing it laid out that way looks great, I'm convinced that removing all blank years is the way to go. -- Bleu Ninja 23:53, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Done. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 04:40, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
