According to the instruction screen, the King of Town has gone crazy and is firing cannon shots at Strong Bad's castle. Strong Bad's only method of defense is catapults loaded with food. The King of Town has four cannons to shoot, while Strong Bad is given five catapults to launch food with.
The object of the game is to achieve a higher score than the King of Town before the 30-second timer runs out. The King of Town scores 25 points for each cannon shot that hits Strong Bad's side. Strong Bad must make the King of Town eat the food on his catapults by moving the mouse cursor to the catapult (each catapult has a brief cooldown after firing) and clicking the "fire!" button. Every time he does so successfully, he scores 10 points and the King is momentarily distracted while he finishes eating.
The winner is rewarded with cupcakes, while the loser is punished by being lowered into either a cauldron full of hot melted butter (King) or The Poopsmith's pile of whatsit (Strong Bad).
[edit] End game animations
Depending on how you performed in the game, one of three things will happen.
[edit] You win
{A message in Olde English text on the screen says, "Strong Bad Wins!". Same music intro is played.}
STRONG BAD: In your face, kingy!
{Strong Bad is in the foreground chowing down on a cupcake as the King of Town is being lowered by a rope into the cauldron. The rope stops briefly.}
THE KING OF TOWN: The punishment is not too bad, eh?
[edit] You lose
{A message in Olde English text on the screen says, "The King Wins!". Music with a negative tone is played.}
THE KING OF TOWN: I rule the school!
{The King of Town is in the foreground chowing down on several cupcakes while Strong Bad is lowered by a rope into the whatsit pile as the Poopsmith looks on.}
STRONG BAD: Uh-oh. This is about to get a whole lot more unfortunate.
[edit] You tie
{A message in Olde English text on the screen says, "You Guys Tied!". The same music with a negative tone is also played.}
[edit] Fun Facts
[edit] Trivia
- This was originally released as part of the 2003 April Fools' gag.
[edit] Remarks
- A good way to ensure victory is to fire bombs in quick succession top to bottom, and at the bottom going back to the by-then charged top catapult.
- During the ending cutscenes, an older design of the King of Town is used.
- Strong Bad cannot get points unless he actually hits the King, while the King only has to get a bomb to Strong Bad's side.
- The King of Town appears in a total of seven positions. Three of them are between cannons, which means he cannot attack you for about two seconds.
- The battlements of Strong Bad's castle are divided into four segments, which change appearance every time they are hit by a cannonball. It is difficult to tell due to the simple bird's-eye visuals, but this seems to represent damage and destruction of Strong Bad's wall. Each section disappears when it has taken enough hits, leaving only a simple wall with no details underneath. This all seems to suggest that at one point, the game was planned to play somewhat differently, with the wall's deterioration actually impacting gameplay.
[edit] Glitches
- If Strong Bad gets a higher score a split second before the King hits him and the timer runs out, Strong Bad win regardless, for example 120-125.
- The "You Win" screen can be seen by playing the Flash file, then right-clicking and hitting "Play" while the King is saying "I rule the school!"
- If the game freezes temporarily and takes longer than the allotted time to recover, the timer will read negative, and the game will continue indefinitely.
[edit] Inside References
- The short sound clip played at the start screen, as well as if the player wins, is taken from the menu for The King of Town DVD.
[edit] Real-World References
- "The punishment is not too bad, eh?" is a quote from "The Beerhunter" segment on the Bob & Doug McKenzie album The Great White North in which the "punishment" for opening an unshaken beer is to drink it.
[edit] Fast Forward
- The catapult used in the game is seen again in Kick-A-Ball.
