[edit] Mister Beatles

We have two warring versions of which song Homestar is referring to with his first line, and thing is... both are correct. Both "Broken Wings" and "Blackbird" contain the phrase Homestar says ("take these broken wings and learn to fly") in their lyrics. Now, given the other two lines, obviously he is referring to a song. But which do we report? The Beatles did come first, but Mr. Mister is more contemporary of the other two... --Jay (Gobble) 07:47, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't see why we can't mention both. For the record, I was thinking of only the Mr. Mister song (it's right in the title) and had to give the Beatles song a fresh listen to remember that that lyric was in it too. — It's dot com 09:11, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
If I had to choose one, I'd choose "Blackbird" because the Mr. Mister lyric is "and learn to fly again" whereas the Beatles song goes straight to the next line after "fly". I'd probably prefer to have both, though. DEI DAT VM┌datvm center\super contra┘ 15:12, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
Agreed. As that lyric is structured in "Broken Wings", it's very hard to omit the last word from it. What Homestar says is verbatim from "Blackbird" with nothing omitted. But I do see the possibility that it was supposed to be from "Broken Wings"; I also thought of that song first.
You know, things might have been different if "Blackbird" had actually been released as a single... Lots of people know "Broken Wings" but, as Anonny said, haven't heard of Mr. Mister. If we're going by personal anecdotes now, I do, in fact, literally not know who Mr. Mister is. I am vaguely aware of the group name but I've never heard "Broken Wings" before seeing the name on this wiki, while I am intimately familiar with the White Album and immediately recognized the lyric as a Beatles reference. Luckily we have other resources to fall back on than personal experience of wiki editors, and I can note that "Blackbird" is one of the most famous songs of all time, despite having never been released as a single. I'm not averse to keeping a mention of Mr. Mister on the page but an edit war over whether or not this is a Beatles lyric is ludicrous. --50.175.128.158 16:26, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm currently working on the subtitles. I have no idea when I'm going to be finished, but I just got to the point when Dijjery Doo enters. Question: how do I subtitle Dijjery Doo's speech? For some reason, the toon is out of sync with the sound. Is this happening to anyone else, or is it just me? Mml554 talk 21:17, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Totally not just you. It starts out fine, but around the "who the crap is Dijjery Doo" bit, you can start noticing the animation being a bit slow. It seems to get progressively more out-of-sync as the toon goes. The Easter egg seems okay, though. Lira (talk) 21:32, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

You may be right... That said, I see that you and I are both using Linux, and I had already updated to the most recent version of Flash prior to watching it. So unless an older version works better, that shouldn't make a difference.
What I did notice is that (at least when using the HRWiki Greasemonkey script in Firefox) the toon gradually loses sync when played from the beginning, but is perfectly synced whenever it is unpaused. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 00:34, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
Seems like the same issue that older toons like A Jumping Jack Contest and Marshmallow's Last Stand had.

After I found a video of the live premiere, I tried to add a transcript of Strong Bad's and Homestar's exchange after finishing the book to the Trivia section. However, I can't tell what Homestar says before, "Lady legs?" Can anyone else tell? BBG 04:17, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

The original version was transcribed in the Sandbox when the video was first found. Probably worth adding to the page, although it might need more proofreading first. Homestar's line in question is "HLLs? Hot Lady Legs? Yeah. I told you it was terrible!". Lira (talk) 04:44, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Does Homestar say "I wash my hands" or "I washed my hands" (of this whole affair)? It was originally transcribed in the Sandbox as "washed", but when I was doing the official transcript, I wrote it as "wash" because I simply can't hear a "d" sound. Not being all that familiar with the expression, I'm not sure which one would make more sense. Can someone else shed some light? Lira (talk) 13:45, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

I've heard the expression before, and pretty much always in the present tense. Homestar's line is a little ambiguous, but sounds more like "wash" to me. Compare it to his "Washed hands! Hands washed!" later in the toon, which is not ambiguous at all. --Jay (Gobble) 11:41, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

[edit] Fourth Wall Break?

Facts were just added to this page and the Fourth Wall Breaks page about Dijjery Doo breaking the fourth wall by speaking directly to the audience. That could belong, but I'm not totally convinced— it was kind of my impression that Dijjery Doo broke free and was yelling out to whoever happened to be nearby ("you guys" meaning "you characters who are probably around here somewhere"). I don't think he was necessarily talking to the audience, or at least that it's unambiguous enough to merit that fun fact. Thoughts? Lira (talk) 13:26, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

I noticed that Strong Bad had gray shading on his pants in this toon. But in the Mario Paint easter egg, his pants go back to their purple shading. Should this be noted, even though it only appears in the beginning?

I think other pages for toons that have an inconsistency in character design note them. I can't remember which those are, though. I'm not sure it should be noted in Strong Bad Evolution until it appears in other toons, but if it does it could be worth a sentence in the description of the current design. The gray shading is not the only difference. If you look closely, Strong Bad's mouth is a slightly different shape; it looks a little more symmetrical than previously. As for the pants shading, I think a minor note in the seventh design might be helpful (much like how it's mentioned that a few toons and emails use the previous design for his mask). So, I'm wondering, is this fun fact really explaining the joke? I don't think the phrase "Sad Sack" is popular enough nor the reference itself obvious enough to not be included in the wiki. I, myself, originally thought that they were calling president Taylor sad (remember that we only hear what's said first, not how it's intended to be spelled). If there are no objections I'm going to revert and tidy up the fun fact. --Stux 12:55, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Portmanteaux used in toons are usually indicated in some way in the Fun Facts section, I think. Though I'm not sure we need to define "sad sack". Just indicating that the phrase exists and is part of the portmanteau should be fine. DEI DAT VM┌datvm center\super contra┘ 14:47, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Is it worth mentioning the possibility that in the original story, "The Sneak" was intended to be the name of the yet-unnamed The Cheat, which the Bros. Chaps repurposed into the name of his old timey counterpart? ----Minermanb
