[edit] What Year It Is

I have always wondered what year it is in the world of HSR. This is the first time that I am aware of that the date was so clearly stated to be the present. The Cheat uses new computers, so we know that Strong Bad uses old ones, but that is the only time before that I am aware of that the year has been hinted at.

As Strong Sad himself says in here, "It's not called TrogdorCon and it's 2005!"
An awful lot of users not using signatures! anyhow the strong bad email environment strong bad says it is 2008, which it was at the time. to put it vaguely, they follow the same time as we do.--safariventureman 10:59, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
If there had been a signature, you would have seen that the comment you're replying to is five and a half years old. — It's dot com 14:55, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Oh my grawsh, it is! I fell ancient!--safariventureman 00:31, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] The Longest Short

I think the designation "short" no longer refers to the length of the toon, but to its structure. "Toons" attempt (more or less) to tell a story, whereas "shorts" are more of a "slice-of-life" scene. — It's dot com 16:00, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I think you're right on the money, Dot com. But it also seems like all of the puppet stuff are also in this "short" designation.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 16:18, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Er, don't all the puppet stuffs get their own category? — It's dot com 16:22, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I know, I'm just saying that alot of the puppet stuff are "slices-of-life" is all.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 16:38, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I've found the answer!! Toons actually have opening credits (where it says like "Voices by Matt and Missy", etc) or show the title, while shorts don't. SaltyTalk! 15:48, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Senor Cardgage

The pea soup is totally a reference to Senor Cardgage. 66.222.39.60 16:07, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

You're right, man. Though I think it has something from "50K RACEWALKER". The 386 16:07, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

What did you do? It goes to the first headline!

No, it is probably just a reference to the Kings hate of peas. - Lord-Z

[edit] Smiling

I don't know about the rest of you, but this is the first time Iv'e really noticed Strong Bad actually "smile". Homestramy20|Talk 19:05, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

He doesn't do it a lot, but (off the top of my head) two fairly recent times he does are in modeling when he's posing for pictures and montage when he's romancing the Wagon Fulla Pancakes. — It's dot com 19:08, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)
And don't forget when he makes fun of Coach Z in A Jorb Well Done! - The Chort 19:25, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, but I mean like, go from frowning to smiling. Unless thats what he was doing in modeling and montage. Homestramy20|Talk 19:14, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)
He must have really liked his joke. He hardly ever if ever goes from frowning to smiling like that. — It's dot com
Yeah, which is a bit surprising for Strong Bad, because he should of even noticed that it wasn't a very good joke... Homestramy20|Talk 23:35, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)
He also smiled in the email for kids.---Strongglad
I know that he went from smile to frown in marzipan. — talk Bubsty edits 21:31, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Just to follow up on this discussion here, Strong Bad Smiling is now an article. — It's dot com 08:44, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gothified Dork??

Any idea who Strong Sad was suppose to be? (trogga)

I don't think he was anyone in particular, but rather just wearing a typical costume of that sort. --Der Pepper

He is definitely someone specific, but for the life of me I can't place him. - Dr Haggis - Talk 13:50, 6 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Maybe he was dressed like how someone TBC saw dressed at the DragonCon. Homestramy20|Talk 00:55, 9 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 709

Anyone else think The Cheat Mention Booth 709 could be a refrence to Seven of Nine from Star Trek? It'd sure go well with the dorky con tone. -anon

um, anon thats kinda a stretch but that's just me...-User:Timmy!
There's nothing about the booth (which features horns, axes, and swords), other than the first and last digit of the booth number, that suggests Voyager or Seven at all. — It's dot com 22:18, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Booth 709 at Dragoncon was Edhellen Armoury, it sold the referenced items. -steve-o

I thought the same thing at first, but if it's a real booth IT ISN'T a reference. And anyway, 7 of 9 has nothing to do with axes - kyky

[edit] new page?????come on, you know you want to!

i think we should create a page for booth 101-user:Timmy!

What for? There's nothing to go on it. The area itself is very nondescript. It's a table. All of the action occurs in the transcript. What else could be said? At least with Balding Man's Living Room, there's a chance we'll see it again. — It's dot com 22:25, 5 Sep 2005 (UTC)

but we made a page for the mayor in the folky tale toon!and he didnt appear as much as the booth itself!-User:Timmy!

Yes, but he was a fictional character. This is, just a booth, where random things happen. Homestramy20|Talk 22:09, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 50K RaceWalker Reference

Could Homestars "left right left right left" be a reference to 50K Racewalker? -kyky

I think it is. He does get a "fault" of sounds when he messes up. - Joshua
Although, it could just be Homestar being.. just his usual random self. Homestramy20|Talk 00:06, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm... It was up as a fact, now it's removed... I'm tempted to put it back up... it seems debatable at least -kyky
In fact, it is being debated right now in STUFF. — It's dot com 18:42, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] TrogdorCon!!! It's obvious!!!

I think TrogdorCon is a reference to DragonCon where the current HSR Booth. I think this because Trogdor is a Dragon and there are a lot of refernces to DragonCon in this Short. Also, do you think that when Strong Sad is all goin "Oh yeah, that's a good one StrongBad" that he could be building up a psycological defense against him. 20X6 GEM

Well first, 20X6 GEM, you're right about TrogdorCon = DragonCon. In fact, there's a trivia item that points out that Mike and Matt had the same booth number as Strong Bad. Second, I think Strong Sad said what he said because Strong Bad's cut-down really wasn't that good or creative. — It's dot com 04:59, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Well done for stating the blindingly obvious.

[edit] Strong Sad

It has been two times now that Strong Sad has over played a word. He has done this in Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon, when he says "baklava", and in this short, saying "anime". Does anyone think this could be going for Running Gags? Or does it need another reference or two? Homestramy20|Talk 22:06, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It needs at least one more reference. Two would be even better. — It's dot com 22:13, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Oh, okay. I thought I might just point that out, just incase. Homestramy20|Talk 22:14, 7 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Actually, in the email rampage, Marzipan stuttered when she said "Geoff Chaucer would be would be proud." That could be another example. --Bluelite

I think Homestramy was talking about Strong Sad making too enthusiastic an attempt to pronounce words from other ethnicities in a non-anglocentric, phonetically authentic way. Marzipan does the same with baklava, and she's the one who insisted on oo-ke-lay-lay—technically correct. The rampage duplication of words doesn't seem to have anything to do with this, and I'm still trying to figure it out; I thought at first it was to turn her sentence into iambic pentameter, but that would require two more syllables. --notstrongorbad 19:32, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bonus Stage

I think I found out where japimation! watch this toon, and you can here them say Japmimation. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 23:42, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

  • I heard the term "Japanimation" used years ago, probably before that toon, was made, and in a completely divorced context. Sorry. --Jay (Gobble) 23:45, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Closed STUFF

[edit] Please to be putting on more other days

Strong Bad saying "Please to be putting on more clothes..." in the Easter egg is a reference to the Polish email in other days.

[edit] 50K Starrunner

Homestar Runner's chant of "left, right, left, right, right, right, no—" is similar to the description of 50K Racewalker on the Videlectrix games catalog page.

[edit] Rotunda

Is it worth mentioning that Strong Bad's saying "rotunda" in the easter egg is a play on "rotund", which means "round" or, in this case, "overweight"? It seems important to know, but I'm not sure if it's too obvious. Heimstern Läufer 18:51, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

I got it the first time, but that's just me. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

[edit] Again, DVD reference...

I don't feel like looking up Marilyn Manso, but we need it in a reference thing. Like we did with the SBemail commentaries.--Robert Benedicio 05:51, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Goof?

I noticed that when Strong Bad pats The Cheat on the head, The Cheat moves a tiny bit. If you look close enough, you can see this. Is it worth mentioning? Sbmaniac 14:30, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I highly doubt that this is worth mentioning. Thanks for asking before adding, though. — Lapper (talk) 14:33, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] LOTR

Do you think the horn could be a reference to the Horn of Gondor in the Lord of the Rings (movie)?

Actually, I do. First off, does The Cheat's horn make generally the same sound as the one from Lord of the Rings? If so, then I'd definately believe it. Bluebry 17:38, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Should this go anywhere?

That despite Strong Bad saying that, I'm pretty sure Anime wasn't called "Japanimation" at 87. I know this because I was born then, and My eairlest memories of hearing the word anime was around 4 which isn't that far. Furthur more, I saw recordings of shows from 87 and before and they had the name Anime attached to them.

So is this a goof, or a dilberate joke by TBC (Because some people have called it Japanimation, but as far as I remember it was always ANIME") 21:26, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Did the KoT say he hates peas?

Regarding the recent back and forth over whether the King of Town hating peas in different town was an implication or directly said, I had been assuming that his interjection of hating peas was from outside of Strong Bad's imagination and was simply reflected in the in-imagination view that we're shown. Meaning, I assumed that the "real" KoT responds to Strong Bad's song with his interjection, and that's incorporated into the "imaginary" KoT saying it as well. And that would make sense were it not for Strong Sad. I doubt the "real" Strong Sad would interject "I'm evil" into the song, and the ending scene with him dressed as Calibos back in the "real world" seems to make it clear that no one heard SB's song, and that even the interjections were imaginary. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. — Defender1031*Talk 22:48, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Well, Strong Bad responds to the KoT's "I hate peas!" with "I know!". So Strong Bad "knows" that the KoT hates peas. I just hope that he actually knows, and isn't totally 'stnanken. -- 68.37.43.131 23:05, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
What Defender said is true, but it still stands that it was outright stated, rather than implied, albeit by SB’s imagination rather than the "real" KoT. So it’s true that the KoT doesn’t say it, but maybe the fact should be "The King of Town is said [stated? revealed?] to hate peas in different town". -107.77.76.53 23:13, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
I always assumed the King of Town does hate peas, since it would be weird for Strong Bad to make that up. However, since we don't know for sure, I think "stated" is probably the best word. It's accurate and not too definitive. e0uZ2kQ.png Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 23:44, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
I agree with the first half of what Defender said; I always thought that The King reacted in such a way as "but I hate peas! This would be torture." and Strong Bad's response is along the lines of "I know! That's the point." Then he confused me regarding Strong Sad sadly saying "I'm evil.", which I'd say (a) is also a reaction that is well within character, since the horns and a tail in Strong Bad's imagination look far more evil than the ones Strong Sad wore in the end scene, and (b) Strong Bad didn't respond to that, which I'd hazard a guess to say it could hint at this being more within Strong Bad's imagination. In short, I do think the King said he hates peas. The Knights Who Say Ni 01:58, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
Wait, so you think the "real" KoT said he hated peas, but only the "imaginary" SS said he was evil? Why would one be real and the other not? — Defender1031*Talk 02:00, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
I think I was trying to say I wasn't very sure about (b). Continuing the above example, Strong Sad: "Oh well, I guess I'm evil in this version." But I guess he is less likely to show up wearing any horns and a tail if he knows about Strong Bad's song. And I just realized we're only looking at these two examples rather than anyone else, like Strong Mad: "AND ME!" Strong Bad responds to that, fairly within character. He doesn't respond to The Poopsmith, Bubs, Strong Sad, Coach Z, Homestar, or Homsar. And this does have varying ambiguity: I think Strong Sad is more likely to sadly acknowledge his being evil in this version than Homestar is to say he's quitting.
