[edit] Transparent Pictures

How do you upload pictures that have no backgrounds? Because I think a picture of Homestar and Strong Bad making water cooler talk (as seen in cliffhangers) would work perfectly for this template. Bad Bad Guy 02:51, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

In some image editors, you can specify a color as "transparent". My experience with making images for templates, though, is that you'd be better off making the background of the image be the color of the template background (like the image currently on this template). Trey56 02:52, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Not a bad image choice, although typically "water cooler discussions" are where people speculate about plot, etc. Anyway, if we're sticking with the water cooler image, I'm going to work on getting a more cleanly-edited version of it uploaded. Probably later tonight. OptimisticFool 22:29, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't think the water-coller talk is the appropriate image we want to use to define the discussion page. I'd suggest a pic from Ever And More! as more suitable - planning things by concensus, not just idly chatting and gossiping. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:18, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I agree that the water cooler image may not necessarily be the best choice. However, in watching Ever And More! I don't find any really great freeze frames that we might use to represent this template. The thought crosses my mind that the town meeting in unnatural conveys the meaning of a council, although it does have the negative implication that "nobody here listens to anyone else". =] OptimisticFool 04:11, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
That may sometimes be appropriate. ;) The point is not the deeper context of the toon, but the immediate reaction of people to the image. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 08:58, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I really dig the new picture. I don't think that having an image of serious people having serious discussions is a must. We use these template images to add a light hearted feeling to the strict warnings, they don't need to match 100% to the situation. Did I mention I think think it looks really good? And this is what it would look like with the Town Meetin' image:

Too long, no? OptimisticFool 19:45, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

It is longer than normal, but I think I like it! Trey56 20:22, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Me too! Maybe we could repurpose the watercooler image for something forum-related. — It's dot com 20:28, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Too long, Clancy. Too long! But Daisy Dukes aside, This small it's just all the characters standing in line (and The Cheat twice). You can't see the angry eyes, or convey that they are all talking at the same time. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:29, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I repectfully disagree with everything you just said. The notice is a wide banner, so why should we have to restrict ourselves to a square image? Also, I can tell that they're all speaking, and "Town Meeting" is clearly legible. — It's dot com 20:33, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it's templa-awesome! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:17, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Qermaq is 100% correct! Bad Bad Guy 00:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
I think that the image properly conveys that this is a conversation, and the wider image doesn't distract from the main message. I support switching. (Maybe we can find use for the watercooler image elsewhere...) wbwolf (t | ed) 05:39, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad to see this getting some acceptance. It took a lot of time piecing it together, and even from the beginning I feared it would get disapproval based on how wide it is. I do want to point out that, while I feel the image is true to the idea of "an organized forum for people to shout out their ideas all at the same time", some things were manipulated and are not as TBC designed them (e.g. in the toon, Marzipan's mouth is never open while Coach Z's arms are in that specific position). Anyway, I just wanted to point that out to see if that makes an impact on how people feel about the image. OptimisticFool 06:13, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think those minor alterations are a big deal at all, especially since this image is for dollying up a template and not demonstrating information in an article. Trey56 06:24, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] redesign?

So Son created a similar template at Template:Talkheader which i then fixed up because i was curious to see how it would look. I moved it to my userspace to keep it safe and out of harm's way. I actually think that it might be a good idea to go with the redesign, as it's more descriptive of what a talk page should be used for. We can move the current page content from there to here and then delete it if people feel that it's a good idea. — Defender1031*Talk 17:36, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

One of my problems with the redesign (for under $50!) is it seems too busy. For some pages (e.g. HRWiki:Featured Article Nomination), such dense headers are necessary. But the redesign looks like it's intended to be on every talk page. On the other hand, the information about wiki etiquette is nice to have to keep the herd inline. Perhaps some consolidation (or links to behavior)? wbwolf (t | ed) 17:59, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Here's how it would look on this page. I don't think it's all that busy, yes it is a bit larger than the old one, but i don't think it's too overbearing. — Defender1031*Talk 18:14, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Just at a first glance, it seems to me a little chaotic. It might be easier just to have all the boxes in one color or something like that, to simplify. —Guard Duck talk 18:16, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
I tried it like that and it didn't look good. Feel free to play around with colors if you want. — Defender1031*Talk 18:24, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
I think what makes it look chaotic is the image of the Homestarrunner.com crew. I gave it some thought, and I like it as is. When I created the template, I wholesale copied it from Wikipedia, and my goal was to give it a Homestar Runner Wiki spin to it. I think this has been accomplished, and I like the way it looks now.

Actually, there's one thing I would change. I would make the template narrower. As it is right now, it spreads across the entire top of the screen. I'd narrow it a bit, eliminating some of the white space between the text on the right and the text on the left. I think that might help eliminate some of the chaos, because after I just looked at it again, I realized that the white space is adding as much chaos as anything else. [edit] Is The Cheat dead?

Is this template no longer supposed to be used? I see it on some toon talk pages, but the use of it is so sparse. - Catjaz63 12:01, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

This template was meant to be used in very specific cases where people were using our talk pages for forum-like topics (for example, "what did you think of this toon?". It wasn't meant to be used on every talk page, but only on a few that really needed it. This need hasn't arisen much lately largely because the wiki just isn't as active as it used to be, so rarely do we have large amounts of off-topic banter on talk pages anymore.
