[edit] Desirable

So, GIFs are only "desirable" as animated images? Does that mean that they're against the rules otherwise? Because I have an archaic computer, and the program I used to capture my Strong Madlib would have captured it without the dither as a GIF. In other words, are GIF images allowed for user pages - yes or no? Darth Katana X (discussionitem_icon.gif user.gif mail_icon.gif)

There should be no static GIFs on articles. What you put on your user page is up to you. — It's dot com 01:29, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

All right! In that case, I'll convert that pup right away. Thanks for answering me five seconds later. And by the by, I was going to add that I don't have the means to capture that screeny as a PNG file, but I edited the message at the same time that you posted yours - uh...

Update — I tried to capture the image as a GIF file, and the colors got all screwed up for some reason. Man, these people need to test their programs before they post them all over the Internet! So, I resorted to a BMP, just to find that they're freaking blocked! Anyone got advice, or should I just stick with the dithery image? Darth Katana X (discussionitem_icon.gif user.gif mail_icon.gif)

If you'd like, I'll upload a PNG version of the image. Would you like me to just convert the current image, or change it so the rest of the browser window doesn't show? --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 02:04, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks one million, but that's all right! Darth Katana X (discussionitem_icon.gif user.gif mail_icon.gif)

[edit] this bites!

In the Wiki Standards page it list the max file size as 100 kb but on this page it states that 153.6 kb is that max, which is it? I R F 12:54, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki will warn you if it's over 153.6, but our standard is 100. Not that I knew that until just now. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 11:19, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Optimizing?

What does "optimizing a picture for the internet" mean and how should I go about doing it when I'm uploading a picture? -Brightstar Shiner 23:27, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

I have the same question. Should pending uploads that are over 150KB recommended limit (or not) go through any possible lossless compression before uploading? Should images that weren't optimized in the first place be compressed? I know several users have gone through the roof optimizing images of all formats, and I thought that I could help out once in a while too. However, based on this discussion, I feel a little discouraged. It also makes me raise this question: Does it affect the scaled images created by ImageMagick (or whatever the system is using to scale images)? [edit] Papua New Guinea?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to edit a policy page, so I guess I'll just ask. The link for PNG goes to a page that gives a list of things PNG might be. Graphics is something I actually know about, and I don't think the PNG we're looking for is Papua New Guinea. :) Isn't there a better link? TheGirl 00:40, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

You're absolutely right, TheGirl — I changed the link to the specific page about Portable Network Graphic files. Also, yes, you're allowed to correct things like that on a policy page — go ahead and be bold if you see something that can be improved, and if the change isn't for the better, somebody can always change it back, with no harm done! [edit] No Upload

I tried to upload, and it wouldn't work! Can you help? Thanx! NinjaPmPom 23:12 30 November 2008 (UTC)

According to what I hear, you have to wait 3 days or so before the computer database or whatever it's called will let you. Strongkinghomsarsmith 01:18, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
What? Raiku 01:21, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
It means you have to be autoconfirmed. Your account must exist for a set period of time before you can upload. Heimstern Läufer 02:02, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Page Formatting

Does the page formatting that I set work, because I'm seeing a lot of images that have a description like Blah blah blah (from x) (for sbemail135.PNG in this case) or for inside jokes (in this case, Armlesssleeve.PNG) Blah blah blah (from x). How should this be set? (Wow. About 30-an hour minute latoer and I haven't posted this yet). --75.5.176.233 04:28, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't quite understand what you mean. Could you rephrase that? Loafing 19:57, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] SBCG4AP

Which format should be used for SBCG4AP screenshots? PNG? I think this should be added to the standard, too (I'm not doing it because I don't know the answer). Loafing 19:57, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Updating to reflect modern image standards?

Most of these policies have not been updated since 2008 (or earlier). At that point, screen resolutions on average were far smaller and using dial-up internet was not irregular. However much has changed with web standards in the intervening years and as such these image recommendations come across as outdated and overly restrictive. In particular these two stand out to me:

 • Images' dimensions should never exceed 600 pixels in width.
 • Images should not exceed 150 kilobytes.

Both of these are quite extreme, and the vast majority of recent uploads (reasonably) ignore one or both of these requirements as 150kb is vanishingly small for our preferred PNG file type and 600px is rather on the small side for screenshots. I am not much of a webmaster but these should likely be rewritten to better guide new uploads. -- Bleu Ninja 18:10, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
