[edit] It's not even July!

Strong Bad's comment, "What?! Back to school already?! It's not even July!" is a reference to how stores sell event-themed products an absurd amount of time in advance of such events.

From: modeling
Posted on: 19:44, 11 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • Stores regularly sell items for a holiday an absurd amount of time before the holiday (i.e. Christmas stuff in October, Valentine's Day stuff right after Christmas, etc.)

Arguments against:

  • Yes, that's the joke. It doesn't need to be explained.
  • "If a plot element or joke is very obscure, an explanation might be necessary. This should not explain [...] anything even remotely obvious" (HRWiki:Standards#Explanations)

Additional comments:

  • At the time of writing this comment, 11 different people didn't thought it was obvious. (And thats alot for a STUFF page)

[edit] Give a Care

The phrase in the colognac ad "we don't really give a care" is a refrence to the e-mail No Loafing where Strong Bad talks about inspirational posters that talk about "determination and giving a care."

Arguments against:

  • It's a common idiom.

[edit] Stupid Coincidence

Stupid Coincidence Magazine costs $9, the same price as one of those glossy fashion magazines that Strong Bad mentions.

From: modeling
Posted on: 17:41, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • It's a stupid coincidence, just like the magazine.

Arguments against:

  • No kidding. Thats the joke.
  • I thought we weren't supposed to comment on obvious things?

Additional comments:

  • It isn't that obvious to people less observant than most.

[edit] Poached Eggs and Facts

Poachers illegally hunt animals such as elephants for resale and profit.

From: modeling
Posted on: 17:07, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • Strong Sad's soolnds look similar to elephant feet.

Arguments against:

  • The definition of "poacher" is common knowledge—and even if it wasn't, anyone could just look in a dictionary.
    • And this wiki, is deffinently not a dictionary.

Additional comments:

  • Really, wouldn't this be better as a Fun Fact for 50 emails? With the whole "50 bucks? Okay. I'll leave the keys under the at-may" conversation with a mysterous figure on the phone?

[edit] Take Advice From Yer Brudder

Homestar was considering breaking into male modeling in crying.

From: modeling
Posted on: 08:30, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • It's pretty easy to see the ref, it's not like male modeling is a common subject to talk about...
  • As mentioned in the additional comments, Homestar admitted wanting to break into male modeling, and this e-mail shows that he went through with it. Hence the ref.
  • it fits the entire "stupid coincidence" theme.
  • it is a useful reference to another subject
  • Well, it's in crying, so it's a valid reference, even if it's thin.
  • It seems plainly obvious to be a back-reference to crying. It could even be the influence FOR the e-mail that Meghan sent.

Arguments against:

  • But there IS no ref; there's nothing linking these two except sheer coincidence.
  • The subject of male modeling was brought up by Meghan, not TBC or any of their characters.

Additional comments:

  • I think he means that since Homestar was on the cover of that mag he must of gone through with his idea of breaking into male modeling
  • Maybe it's just another stupid coincidence?
  • I like how the guy says "theres nothing linking them except sheer coincedence" which is kind of the theme of the whole thing.
    • There's coincidence that isn't really coincidence - Homestar appearing on the cover of a magazine at the same time as Strong Bad, which isn't REALLY a coincidence because it was intentional on the part of TBC - and there's just sheer unrelated coincidence. This could easily be the latter.
  • The "could be" in the above ArgFor is exactly why as many people declined this - it could be, but it we don't know. Speculation is usually frowned upon on this Wiki.

[edit] Unremarkable

None of the example magazine ads shown match the ads Strong Bad describes.

From: modeling
Posted on: 18:43, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

Arguments against:

  • This remark doesn't draw attention to anything that a viewer (of the transcript or the cartoon) wouldn't notice straghtaway.

Additional comments:

  • Maybe revise to comment on how each add is sort of a messed up version of what Strong Bad describes. Fancy shoes become lame, giant tube socks; fancy colognac becomes cream to fix "stinkfoot." Etc.
    • No, because that part is in the transcript. Take it as it is or leave it, but don't revise it like that.
