Nice Try
From Homestar Runner Wiki
Nice Try!, or a similar taunting message, is occasionally used to confront a viewer trying to access visuals or other content that is typically hidden. Most commonly, this text is hidden by The Brothers Chaps in Flash files to surprise a viewer who has decompiled the Flash file looking for secrets.
The variation "Nice try, Dodongo!", mentioning a recurring enemy type from The Legend of Zelda games, originated in the Strong Bad Email the chair.
[edit] Appearances
- Sbemail 100 Fakeout — At this time, the file name convention for Strong Bad Emails was "sbemail#.html" (for instance, the first email was "sbemail1.html"). Viewers who attempted to view the 100th email before its release by navigating to sbemail100.html were instead met with a taunting message from Strong Bad, saying, "Oh, I suppose you think you're pretty clever, huh?". The actual hundredth email's file name was "sbemailahundred.html".
- Email the chair — The email finishes with Strong Bad adopting Le Restige as his new seat, with the chair's high back comically obscuring most of the email-checking process. He holds up what he claims to be a picture of his parents that the viewer cannot see; decompiling the toon reveals he is simply holding a notice reading "nice try dodongo!".
- Jibblies 2 Teaser — The characters' costumes are hard to make out as they are rendered in silhouettes. If the Flash file is decompiled, assuming the black silhouettes can be removed to show the full costumes, all that can be seen behind the black outlines is the phrase "nice try dan". Later Halloween teasers continued this trend of hidden text, albeit without the specific "nice try" wording.
- The Homestar Runner Enters The Spooky Woods Teaser — As the silhouettes abruptly shift into Storybook style, Strong Bad demands to know what is happening. Rather than explaining, The Homestar Runner instead replies, "Nice try, Dodongo! But you'll have to wait until Halloween!"
- Strong Bad Talking Plush — The back of the doll's mask includes laces tied up, as Strong Bad's mask does. Untying them in an attempt to remove the mask reveals that the words "NICE TRY!" are embroidered behind the lace-up.
- Halloween Hide & Seek (v2.0) — Homestar guesses "Nice try, Dodongo" when trying to guess Strong Bad's teaser costume.
