Anime is the term for animation originating from Japan. References to Japanese cartoons and typical anime art styles have made numerous appearances in the Homestar Runner universe, often in the 20X6 series.
Appearances
- Email japanese cartoon — Strong Bad's "Stinkoman" character is designed to resemble anime, particularly action and sci-fi series from the 80s and 90s. This trend continues throughout all other 20X6 toons.
- Trogdor Con '97 — Strong Sad mentions that he is going to buy some "anime", which Strong Bad refers to by the outdated term "Japanimation". Homestar Runner plans to buy manga (which he mispronounces); "manga" is the Japanese term for comics, and many anime series and films are adaptations of manga.
- Most in the Graveyard — King of Town dresses as Hello Kitty.
- 4 Gregs — When Japanese Culture Greg says a Japanese word, his face is drawn in an exaggerated style typical of anime and manga.
- Later That Night... — Strong Bad dresses as No-Face from the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away.
- @StrongBadActual tweet (23 Jul 2017) — Strong Bad replies to Lindsay Small-Butera reviewing Miyazaki movies in an impression of his voice. Rerecording the post, he adds to it by mentioning that scary moments give him "the Studio Jibblies", a play on words of Studio Ghibli.
- @StrongBadActual tweet (23 Dec 2020) — Strong Bad once again mentions "Studio Jibblies" in response to Studio Ghibli-style fan art.
- The Homestar Runner Enters The Spooky Woods — Marzipan is dressed as Maetel of Galaxy Express 999.
- Halloween Hijinks — The Cheat dresses as Ghibli character Ponyo, from the film of the same name.
- Store — The "Strong Bad Lying on a Tiger" beach towel is described as being "Like those anime body pillows but slightly less disturbing!"
- @StrongBadActual tweet (1 Oct 2021) — Replying to a drawing of Stinkoman, Strong Bad references "Techrobocrosspeada", a portmanteau of Robotech, Macross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.
