[edit] Fun Facts
[edit] Trivia
- According to "The Evolution of Homestar" wallpaper, the book was made in June of 1999.
- Coach Z, Bubs, and the Umpire made their debuts in this story.
- "Coach Zee" would be renamed to simply "Coach Z" by the time of the Old Characters Page.
- This book includes the first instances of a character using a non-inverted question, Homestar kicking a can, and cold ones.
- This is one of the few times Homestar is seen drinking cold ones. He also does so in Theme Song Video, Summer Short Shorts and Date Nite.
[edit] Inside References
- The book opens with "Everyone loves the Homestar Runner. He is a terrific athlete." The Original Book opened with the same phrase, albeit with "Everybody" instead of "Everyone".
[edit] Fixed Glitches
- In the old version, on the image with Bubs, the page URL is hs1x, whereas the others are hs1, hs2, hs3, etc. The Brothers Chaps may have forgotten to put it in, which is why it didn't follow the order, and clicking 'back' from hs14 would lead to hs13, rather than hs1x as it should have. This has since been fixed in the new version made on February 14, 2006, found in the museum.
- In the old version, there were buttons for 'next' on the last image, and 'back' on the first image. Those would lead to cartoons.html, which was 404'd. This has also since been corrected in the new version made on February 14, 2006.
[edit] Fast Forward
- In 2009, the book was remade as a Flash cartoon.
[edit] DVD Version
- Instead of the images being fullscreen, the book is now presented in a similar fashion to kids' book, with music from pop-up playing and the story read aloud.
- The DVD version features hidden creators' commentary. To access it, switch the DVD player's audio language selection while watching.
[edit] Commentary Transcript
(Commentary by: Matt Chapman, Mike Chapman)
MATT: Look, Mike, it's an old book! How many times do you think I say something about, "Look Mike", or "Hi Mike", or "Hey Mike" at the beginning at a commentary?
MIKE: All of them. This is the last bit of Homestar Runner-ery before the website.
MATT: That's right. This was done on Mike's old Free Country, USA website.
MIKE: Yeah, this is just a HTML page click-through story book. Mindspring.com... what was your old...
MATT: ~mikechapman?
MIKE: Yeah, yeah. So, for some reason the "post box" and the "auto" is basically British. Old Homestar sort of had this weird Japanese feel, and then he went through this weird British phase.
{both laugh}
MIKE: And this is the uh... when Bubs and Coach Z, their first appearance.
MATT: De-butt.
MIKE: De-butt. And the umpire, too. Who, uh...
{Matt laughs}
MATT: Who we forgot to make that Easter egg! We were going to put the Umpire in an Easter egg in the last email we made.
MIKE: You'll never hear from him again now! That was his one chance!
MATT: I like the weird shadow of the can. The wind from the can flying. The motion lines.
MIKE: Yeah.
MATT: That's a nice fridge.
MIKE: Well... well, thanks.
MATT: I want to punch this narrator, Mike.
MIKE: That's you, Matt. He's really...
MATT: I don't like him. He's very soft-spoken. He's pandering. I feel like if I was a child I would be insulted by him. Like, "This guy thinks I'm an idiot! I need to be handled with kid gloves." Say something else, Mike.
MIKE: Eh...
MATT: What do you think of your style? Were you... you know, kind of "loosely fill in..."
MIKE: Go outside the lines?
MATT: Yeah, like they tell you not to do!
MIKE: Yeah. I was breaking all the rules with this one. {"The End" shows up on the screen} I agree.
MATT: Yeah...
