The populace of Free Country, USA are a musical bunch, with several instruments among them. Marzipan and the Cheat are the most often seen with instrumental skills, and along with Strong Mad they make up the band Cool Tapes. In addition to Cool Tapes and Marzipan's solo work with her guitar Carol, Bubs and Strong Sad also have some instramental skills, and the King of Town may as well. Also many of the King's servents have been seen with instruments in various bands.

Marzipan's Instruments

Guitar

"Come on Carol, let's rock!"
Powered by the Carl

Carol is Marzipan's guitar, on which she plays syrupy songs. In the Powered by The Cheat music videos "Oh Yeah" from the email marzipan and Seasonal Sweaters from Decemberween In July, she is called "Carl". She is modeled after a nylon-string classical/Spanish guitar. Carol features a drawing of a "Don't Tread on Me"-style snake from the American revolutionary war. In monster truck, Strong Mad was going to smash her over Homestar's head. Marzipan played Carol in a band with The Cheat (drums) and Strong Mad (bass) in the toon Cool Things. However, the sound Carol makes in the song "Cool Tapes" is much more like that of an electric guitar with distortion. Carol also appears when Strong Bad auditions for people to take over checking emails when he retires. Marzipan plays two scroll button songs, both of which Strong Bad dislikes. However, he ends up using one of them.

Ukulele

"Oo-koo-lay-lay!"

The Ukulele is used by Marzipan to play Hawaiian music for her Luau. This is a more appropriate instrument than her guitar "Carol" to accompany Strong Sad's Polynesian prose. This instrument sports the letter "M", standing either for "Marzipan" or as the monogram of the instrument's own name.

Appearances

The Cheat's Intruments

Keyboard

Beautiful music
Puppet time tunes

The Cheat's keyboard is a Casio Sk-1 portable sampling keyboard. The Cheat has played the Strong Badia National Anthem, a background beat for Strong Bad's chart-topping hit "Song About Sibbie," and the acoustics for "Everybody Knows It" on it.

The Cheat's keyboard appears to have an extra key between E and F and two extra keys between B and C.

If Strong Bad had a band, The Cheat would be in it with this keyboard.

Appearances

DJ Equipment/Mixing

Indie-tronic

When The Cheat is on tour as DJ Teh C., he uses this setup as his DJ equipment. It apparently has a pair of single turntables rather than a double, or it has just one. He most likely has a mixer board, as he is able to make an Indie-Tronic remix out of The Geddup Noise, as well as a remix of "Not Talkin' 'bout Butter".

Appearances

Record Player

The record player

The Cheat's Record Player appeared in rampage when The Cheat was playing background music for Strong Bad and Coach Z when they were going on a lyrical rampage.

According to the DVD Commentary for rampage, this is based off of the Fisher Price Record Player toy that Matt had when he was a kid, and tried to bring to college. The real record player could play 33 to 45 RPM records and, according to Matt, could only play "slow stuff or jazz" or else "it just couldn't handle it."

Appearances

Drums

Cool Tapes

The Cheat plays a trap set in the band Cool Tapes. He appears to play right handed based on the location of the snare drum. He has the Cool Tapes written on his bass drum cover.

Appearances

Strong Mad's Instruments

Electric Bass

DOLEY-O!!!

Strong Mad's bass is an instrument that Strong Mad plays in his band with Marzipan and The Cheat. The bass is black and has Strong Mad's intitials on the headstock. He uses a blue pick to play.

He was first seen playing the instrument in Cool Things as the band recorded their first Cool Tapes song. He later played again in a topiary garden during the band's midwestern tour in Weclome Back.

Appearances

Bubs' Instruments

Keytar

Bubs gets all the royalties

Bubs' Keytar is based on a Yamaha SHS-10 FM digital keyboard. The most common version of the SHS-10 is red and features colored buttons. It was often used as a cheap MIDI controller in the late '80s, as the sounds are nothing special. At around $100, it was almost a toy, but had professional features like MIDI out, pitch-bend, and a two-digit LED display to indicate patch/program changes.

The only significant difference between Bubs' keytar and a real SHS-10 is that Bubs' only has 24 keys, whereas a real one has 32.

It debuted in the Strong Bad Email "cheatday." Bubs had it handy behind the couch in Strong Bad's basement so he could help supply the music for "The Date of Birth Song". It seems that Strong Bad and The Cheat did not appreciate Bubs butting into the song with his keytar.

Appearances

Strong Sad's Instruments

Guitar

Walkin' on clouds and flippin' off rainbows.

Strong Sad owns a classical guitar that he plays in the email song for alternate universe. A drawing of Strong Sad playing a twelve-string guitar had previously appeared in the sketchbook. That guitar was held right-handed, and Strong Sad was seen writing right-handed in record book and Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon. Nevertheless, he plays this six-string guitar left-handed.
