The year 1987 is the most-referenced year from the '80s in the Homestar Runner universe.
The DVD commentary for monster truck discusses Halloween 1987, when Donnie Chapman dressed as Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe (photographs of which would be used to depict Limozeen) and Matt Chapman dressed as Evel Knievel. At Flashforward 2006 Seattle, Mike mentioned that Matt won an award at a media festival for stop motion clay animation when he was in the seventh grade in 1987.

- Sketchbook (museum) — The caption claims that ice cream treats fashioned after Homestar Runner, Pom Pom, and Strong Bad's ice cream incarnations "were HUGE in Japan the summer of '87."
- Email 2 years — Van Mundegaarde has been Strong Bad's "main man" since 1987. An autographed portrait of Strong Bad exhorts Van Mundegaarde to "Keep Rocking it 1987-style".
- Email no loafing — Amidst 1987's "something-eight percent" productivity decrease, the No Loafing Sign was put up.
- Awexome Cross — The game is copyrighted 1987, despite bearing "98" in its title.
- Trogdor Con '97 — Strong Bad refers to anime as "Japanimation", admitting he has not checked the proper terminology for Japanese animation since 1987.
- Peasant's Quest Animatic — The Peasant's Quest credits page dates it to 1987.
- Teen Girl Squad Issue 12 — Mindy was Chief Cheerleader from 1984 through 1987.
- One Two, One Two (DVD Commentary) — The Brothers Chaps imagine that the song Strong Bad sings may have originally been sung by "a very independent lady" in 1987.
- Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 17.2 — The cassette tape that holds the messages is labeled "farm aid '87".
