It is named after the 19th century Chinese military leader Zuo Zongtang (formerly rendered as Tso Tsung-t'ang), but he neither invented it nor ever ate it. The proper pronunciation would therefore roughly be "Tswo", but many variations exist, such as "Tao", which Strong Bad uses. The meal appears popular in Free Country, USA and is typically seen in a take-out box.

A Chinese chicken dish appeared in big white face as one of the many items that can be topped upon The Poopsmith's cake by clicking on it. It is unclear as to whether this is General Tso's chicken or a different variety.
A similar take-out box appears in Dangeresque Roomisode 1, albeit printed with a different design (a "Dragon Man") on the front.
