Welcome!

Welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! I wanted to extend a personal welcome, since I believe strongly that a Wiki should be a democratic and non-threatening place where everyone feels like they can contribute. Unfortunately it can be very frustrating at first if you make changes that are ignored or changed back by other users, but if so I encourage you to hang in there; as you get a feel for the way things are done around here you'll feel more at home. That was my experience, anyway!

If you need any help, feel free to ask anyone on the welcoming committee (like me!). You can also post questions on the FAQ talk page.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • The best way to start is with the HRWiki:Introduction, followed by a brief tour of the wiki: HRWiki tour!
  • If you need general information, editing tips, or answers to frequently asked questions, check out the help page.
  • Before you do any significant editing, be sure to familiarize yourself with our wiki standards.
  • Read up on the rules and guidelines for your user page. What you're reading right now, by the way, is the "Talk:" page that goes with your user page. It's a good way to communicate directly with specific users. The best way to respond, though, is on the same user page where the conversation was started. E.g. if you have a question, go to my user talk page and edit it, then watch my page (via Recent changes) for a response.
  • If you're not sure what you can do to help out, head over to The Stick.
  • If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum and get More Community Interaction Than You Or Your Grandmother Can Handle!
  • Above all, be bold and have fun!

Feel free to delete this message when you're done reading it. (In general, it's frowned on to delete other people's input on talk pages, but this entry is just here to be helpful. When it's done being helpful, I guarantee you won't hurt my feelings by ditching it!)

Sincerely,
AbdiViklas and the rest of the welcoming committee (23:00, 2 January 2006 (UTC))

ok, even though abdi beat me to you, um.........thanks for joining the wiki! Seriously 23:06, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, sorry for doing what I just complained about earlier (beating somebody to the welcome)! —AbdiViklas 23:21, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Signature

To answer your question, one would leave a signature by typing four tildes (~~~~). -- Tom 23:14, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

{EDIT CONFLICT (i.e. written at the same time as the above edit)}Hey YK! Here's the easiest way to sign something: type some tildes, like ~~~. If you use three it will automatically turn into your Username (linked to your user page); four will turn into the same thing plus the time and date; and five will turn into just the time and date. And as for figuring out how things are done, I highly recommend the links in my welcome message above, especially Help. (And, as you start doing more editting, the standards.) But really the best way to catch on is to hang out monitoring Recent changes and see what people do and say. Now, check out what happens when I use ~~~~: —AbdiViklas 23:21, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Lemme give it a try here... YK 23:36, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Ah, good. Now I suppose I should make an "about me" page... eh. I'll do that later. =P Thanks for the help, guys. YK 23:36, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Strong Bad's Website on STUFF

Hi there, YK. I've removed your STUFF page on Strong Bad's Website because you're arguments were correct: bottom 10 came out two years after website; therefore, the fact was pointless and has been removed. Thanks! —FireBird|Talk 01:46, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I made a comment in the Talk page for said site, but it went unanswered for a week or so, so I decided STUFFing it might get it some notice. I thought it was kinda silly, but I didn't want to outright delete it, so...yeah. =P -YK 01:52, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Good userpage

Y'know, I have to admit, Your userpage is pretty good. There's one problem: You should upload an image. If you know to cut and paste, than you could click on edit when visiting my userpage. when you click edit, you'll see how I put an image up. Just cut and paste, and customize the images any way you want! This way, you're userpage wil be great. Talk atcha later, — Seriously (Talk) 14:58, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the compliment. Thing is, I don't really have any ideas for pictures to add there at the moment... though I'll upload any if I do. -YK 05:02, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Sig

I fixed those links for you, let somebody know if you need any help designing your sig. Thunderbird 04:38, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Man, you guys are quick! Well, I read all the how-tos and stuff sometime back, but I ended up lost. At the least, it never mentioned how to include a small picture. I'm still fairly new to wiki...ing, so, can you (or someone else) explain that part to me? Beyond that, I'll try to wing it. -YK 04:44, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Click "preferences" (one of the options at the very top), and paste this into the line that says "nickname":
{{User:YK/sig}}
Make sure the "raw signatures" box is checked. (Done). When you've done that, let me know, and make sure to sign so we know if it's right or not. :) Thunderbird 04:53, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I think I've got the basics figured out. However, knowing what that particular SBEmail means doesn't help me with my sig issue. =P

In all seriousness, I've figured out what to do. I've never messed with the buttons at the top of the edit pages before. However, I'm not sure what to do about adding colors and/or pictures. Currently, I just italicized my nick as a test. If it works, and if I can get some help with what I just said... I'll improve it. Thanks. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 05:06, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Removing non-arguments

It sounded like you were hesitant to remove this non-argument. Don't be. You did the exact right thing. :) — It's dot com 03:21, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

STUFF

I just read this — I don't think you need to STUFF it. If somebody strongly believes in it, then it's their job to start the STUFF process. Talk atcha later! Trey56 23:10, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Point. I'll let someone else STUFF it, then. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 23:11, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Cool, thanks. Just wanted to save you some effort :) Trey56 23:12, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Fraternal Order of Referential Explanations Local 4157

Good call on moving my comment from Real-World References to Explanations. That's exactly where it belonged. I was so disappointed when I checked this evening and my "Reference" wasn't there anymore, only to realize I'd simply put it in the wrong section to begin with and you'd corrected that! -ReverendTed 03:24, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

This section is a reference to your edit

I'm gonna go ahead and give you some brownie points for this edit. Good jorb! :-) Loafing 04:41, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Heh. Thanks. Actually, I was about to outright delete that fact as a stretch, but decided I'd look at the transcript for A Jumping Jack Contest first. And sure enough, it *does* seem to be the same line. Still, I've seen the word "reference" on this wiki so many times, it's all but lost its meaning, so I like to use worthwhile substitutions when possible. =P -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 04:44, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Please be to not stomping on other people's talkin's.

On Talk:web_comics it looks like you had a bit of an edit conflict or something, and just steamrolled right over other people's edits. On talk pages, I believe that's considered impolite at best, and downright malicious at worst. You're generally not supposed to edit what other people say. I'd suggest rolling back your edit to recover what Dementedc and KieferSkunk said, then add your own paragraph in properly. I'd have rolled it back myself, but that would have made it a little harder for you to repost your paragraph, so I thought I'd leave that in your hands. The other option is to have an admin sort the edits out, they might be able to fix it cleanly. -- LGC&CS 22:31, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

:Err... what? I, er, inserted my post in the conversation where it belonged, as I was specifically responding to Kiefer. If I accidentally removed posts, it was an accident (perhaps due to the fact that I accidentally editted an older version of the page) and nothing more. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 22:48, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Reverted. That's all it was. The Wiki hasn't been working right for me over the last few days... lots of slowdown, and sometimes my edits just flat out don't save. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 22:51, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Glad you got that straightened out. I figured it was probably an honest mistake. I mean, the Wiki does involve computers, the Internet, and web pages. The potential for random failure just gets worse the more of those you involve. Considering the timestamps, you probably edited an earlier version of the page, and saved it, rather than it being an edit conflict. Thanks for taking care of it though! -- LGC&CS 23:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Patterns in new Users

Hi YK, I just wanted to give you a small tip. If you see new users routinely avoid using an edit summary, you may want to check their contributions. It is often the case that new users do not know how to use the features of this wiki well. If that's the case a small, nice reminder can be useful. A template you can subst: can be found here, though sometimes it may be best to copy the text and modify it as needed. --Stux 15:18, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

About reverts and edit warring

Hey, YK. I need to remind you (or, if you've never discussed this matter before, talk with you about it for the first time) that edit warring is disruptive. By edit warring, I mean repeatedly reverting others' edits rather than discussing the reasons why and, if necessary, working toward a solution to the dispute. So, in the future, it's important not to get caught up reverting, but rather to discuss on talk pages and seek consensus. OK, talk atcha later! Heimstern Läufer 03:12, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

No problem. I actually do tend to take stuff to the talk page, but lately, DeFender seems to be on my case about a lot of things. (Hence my outburst.) Guess I'm putting too much thought into a wiki devoted to "dumb animal characters". Heh. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 04:02, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
It's not just on your case, and I have already apologized. Can we please stop biting each others' heads off? I didn't mean any harm, really. I'd like to take a step back and realize that we're all on the same side here. I'm truly sorry for the manner in which I have been conducting myself lately. I hope that this doesn't mean that we can't still besing friends. :-) — Defender1031*Talk 04:08, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Ahh... I actually posted that reply to Heimi before I saw your reply on the Wormdingler talk page. Yeah, we're taking this stuff way too seriously. I'm sorry for the attack earlier; I guess the best we can do now is forget about it and move on. I'm known for being a bit too "intense" at times (got banned from more than one board for being just a tad too vocal; fortunately, the mods here are among the best and fairest I've seen on any site, so I'd have no real *reason* to challenge them... but I digress, heh), so I'm glad this was resolved quickly and harmlessly... mostly. =P -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 04:12, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I know whatcha mean, i often say that this is the best run wiki on the internet. It's tough to take a step back sometimes, I know that. So very good, I'm glad we could get that resolved, is there anything else i can-- — Defender1031*Talk 04:17, 16 January 2008 (UTC) P. S. you wouldn't happen to be Y~K from the zsnes board would you?
Nope. This is about the only place I routinely hang out, though I do have some minor connections to the emulation scene. I'm an admin at SNESMusic.org, which deals in SPCs, Super Nintendo music. I go by "YK" there, too, so... -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 05:38, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Whew... i'm glad... that guy is an idiot. I knew that you had some connection, that's why i was suspicious. (IIRC, you said something about SNESMusic in a jibblies 2 debate). — Defender1031*Talk 23:44, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Speaking of edit warring: Your repeated reverts to Quote of the Week aren't helpful. As you pointed out yourself, the fact is currently being discussed. While it's not helpful that Deffy put it back on the page, it's equally unhelpful of you to revert him. You should wait for the discussion to end before you change or delete the fact. You reverted that fact four times in a row. If that's not a revert war, then I don't know what is. Also, this edit summary is not helpful. Try to stay polite when people disagree with you. Thanks Loafing 01:39, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Indeed

Re:your summary: Yes, edit conflict, as I was trying to just add a stub template. It's been doing this lately, not warning people that someone else has edited it. Dunno what the deal is. Heimstern Läufer 07:03, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, I can't say that's never happened to me before, so... no harm done. Thanks for the comment. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 07:08, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Ha ha.

...and before an admin sees my last edit and decides to post here, yes, I just became aware of what day it is, EST. Cute, but horrifically annoying. Gonna make edits a pain today/tomorrow... -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 04:12, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

So you're purposely going to make people suffer? Doesn't sound too nice to me. Besides, sysops AND admins have the ability to "revert" with just a few clicks of the mouse. Rather than having to remember what was on the page. Although I can't remember how to do it, since I never had to do it on my own wiki. ColdReactive
...say... what? Were you responding to the correct post? O_o This was posted on April Fools' Day, in response to an edit I made in regards to the page scrambling. I ultimately deleted it... and can't see anything malicious in either this post or the deleted edit I made in the talk page for shapeshifter. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 18:10, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Then I suggest you remove this from your talk, otherwise people may get the wrong idea. Or at least... archive it. ColdReactive
Haw. I just realized what you meant by your original post... heheh. By "gonna make edits a pain today/tomorrow", I meant the scrambling stuff would make edits annoying... which it did, but not *too* much. Oh well, never mind. This is outdated anyhow. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 03:27, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Woah, i really didn't mean to upset you

Listen, i wasn't attacking you, and i'm sorry if you think that i was. Really, you're a great editor, and i have always valued your opinion. I was not angry at you in the slightest. I merely have this thing about respecting other people, and was commenting on that. You are right, "invalid" was a bit of a strong word to use, and i may come on too strongly when defending the honor of others, and I apologize for that. But please understand, that in no way did i mean to offend you or insult YOUR honor in the process, as it undermines what i'm trying to do. You think that the honor of a guy with a history of disruptive edits is more important to me than yours is, a long-standing well-contributing editor? Surely not. I apologize for anything i may have said to offend you, and hope that you can forgive me. — Defender1031*Talk 04:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Mm. I'm not really *mad*, so much as.... hm... mildly irritated. Honestly, yes, I'm probably being unfair in my judgement regarding that template largely due to its creator. As I said in that post, my outspoken nature *has* gotten me into trouble, many times, which isn't, never has been, and essentially never *will* be, my intent at all. I *do* tend to have a very low tolerance level for troublemakers and vandals, however, which stems back to many other bitter experiences I've had online. I've been a moderator on several message boards, have run several websites... and it's not especially *fun* when someone tries to tear your hard work down for what essentially amounts to a few childish laughs on their end. Trust is something one has to earn, and with a history of garden-variety vandalism, and having been blocked twice (and indeed, still making several odd, dubious edits), it's gonna take more than someone saying "play nice, children" to change how I feel about MichaelXX2.
That said, I *do* value the work you do for this Wiki. You're a great contributor, and you do a good job making sure things go smoothly. For what little my opinion matters in such a regard, you'd actually make a fine sysadmin, yet you *do* tend to come on very strongly a lot, to the point where it almost seems like you're attacking one person in an effort to defend another. I doubt you "cause fights" any more intentionally than I do, and it's not necessarily the *wrong* attitude, mind you, but if you can tone that down, you'll do great. That said, while my feelings won't change about once-vandals, I *will* keep them to myself instead of getting others angry at me for what sometimes come off as personal attacks. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 04:25, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Would you mind coming to IRC? i'd like to talk to you more personally and privately. — Defender1031*Talk 04:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Sig thing

Remember the sig thing Optimistic Fool did in the sandbox a bit back? Someone did archive it. DrPepper42 01:30, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

It was archived here. Nice Onion Bubs sig, BTW. =P -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 02:02, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Onion Bubs is awesome. DrPepper42 02:04, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
