[edit] Inclusion

I know this technically has three appearances, but the second one is a direct reference to the first one, so in a way, there are only two references here. I'm not sure there's a need for this article, at least not yet. — It's dot com 18:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm neutral on this issue, but a possible alternative to deletion is to merge with Sports#Basketball. Bluebry 18:26, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I don't think we should outright delete it, (if anything, put it on the "Potential Running Gags page), but I agree with It's Dot Com. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 18:28, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I think we should keep it. Slipknot6477 16:52, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Ah, but there *are* three references. The page fails to mention the intro song to trading cards. That one isn't actually "the ball at the top of the key", but it *is* "at the top of the key". -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 23:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I dunno... it's like having three similar instances and then one that's close, but not as similar as the other three in comparison to the... other three. I have no idea what I'm saying. Okay, it's like having one apple, and three oranges. Yay. Bluebry 01:19, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, I think these instances are more related than, say, appearances/mentions of something especially common, such as dogs. Heck, we have a page for Jerome, which has only two sightings, both probably linked, so I'm for keeping this page. It's a legit running gag. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 03:03, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
I think this page have enough references and was moved to the proper name, so I'm removing the TBD template. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 10:38, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Name

I know we have lots of precedent for titles with "X" in them, but I think it's something we should avoid if practical. — It's dot com 18:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I dunno, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of other names to use. Bluebry 18:26, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Top of the Key, prehaps? Has Matt? (talk) 18:35, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Bluebry 18:36, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I think Ball at the Top of the Key is better. — Defender1031*Talk 18:47, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
See the comment by YK above. "At the Top of the Key" might work better. — It's dot com 23:12, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I think if we leave out Ball, we should just do Top of the Key. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 01:13, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

its name is fine. Slipknot6477 16:52, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

The current title is a little bit too long. Top of the Key is nice and snappy. Perfect. – The Chort 12:13, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
I just moved this page to Top of the Key, I also think it is a better name.--~ SlipStream 10:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Support Top of the Key, concise and that's the notable part of the phrase after all. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 15:39, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Meaning

So is that a phrase with any meaning in basketball, or is it just nonsense meant to sound like jargon? Minivet 18:28, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, it has meaning in basketball. -DAGRON 20:04, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Merge?

Can this be merged with Reg Having the Ball? There doesn't seem to be enough information to merit two separate articles.— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 06:46, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

That's what I've been saying the whole time. --DorianGray 06:48, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
I totally agree — I didn't even know about the other article. Trey56 16:08, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Nope, there have been other "top of the key" references than just reg, and this reg instance is at the twenty, not the top of the key... two separate gags. seriously, can we discuss this once and only once? — Defender1031*Talk 17:35, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Balderdash I say. The running joke is "Reg had the ball at the top of the key". You can't split it up and call it funny.--78.149.170.82 19:55, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
I agree. Don't you think I agree? I agree! Saying they're separate is like saying "Homestar" and "Runner" are separate things. 23:55, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Except for the fact that each part has appeared a couple times with the other, but a couple of times separately as well. — Defender1031*Talk 21:22, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Everything about Reg having the ball somewhere other than the top of the key only differentiates from "at the top of the key" by one word. As for what happens at the top of the key being something other than Reg having the ball: there is one occurrence. All the others match Reg having the ball within one word's precision. Is that one exception strong enough to leave these two as separate articles? The Knights Who Say Ni 05:17, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
Seems consensus is against three-years-ago-me, and I think i have to add my voice as well against him. Sorry me, but that just doesn't make any sense. Btw, just hang in there, it really DOES get better. — Defender1031*Talk 06:56, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
So... should they be merged then? Abelhawk 14:49, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
I totally agree that "Reg had the ball" and "at the top of the key" are totally not seperate running gags. "Reg has the ball at the top of the twenty" and "Homestar had the ball at the top of the key" are just variations of this one running gag. (As for "leave your dreams at the top of the key", I'm not sure if that's even a reference.) Just because a running gag has a few variations doesn't mean you can split it up into two seperate halves and call them each a running gag. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 22:08, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
It seems DeFender was the only one opposed to a merge, and now he agrees, so... I think we have 100% consensus. Should we merge the pages now? I made a draft in the Sandbox. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 07:22, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
If you're planning to use the HRWiki:Sandbox for a preview, i would recommend clearing out everything that's not related to the new article. Also, the new merged article should include both categories from both articles. --Stux 20:23, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
I would clear out the Sandbox, but there are too many important projects in there. Also, I added both categories. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 23:42, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Seems like we have consensus, so if there are no objections in the next few days, I'm gonna merge 'em up Dan. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 20:39, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
Done! Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 04:12, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

[edit] Definition of Top of the Key

As defined from en.mimi.hu... Top of the Key is "The area behind the free throw line but inside or near the free throw circle." and Key (Basketball)#Terms maybe this should be added to the article... somehow? --Wi2K Talk-Favorites-173 11:33, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. --PartyBrd20X6 00:53, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
