[edit] Looking For Assignments

Hi, there. . . I'm really looking for some way to make myself useful to the Wiki community (so I don't feel like I joined for no reason ^_^), but I checked stuff out on the Stick and everything I looked at seemed to be done already. Any suggestions? I'm primarily suited for WikiGnome activities--correcting spelling, grammar, cleaning stuff up, etc. Anyway appreciate any help you can give me. Eh! Megan 03:26, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

When I am bored, I hit the random page link in the left column, and look for ways the articles I find might be improved. Try that. And incidentally, did you sign your talk posts with 4 ~'s? It didn't appear like I think you intended. Check your settings in preferences again, be sure you have the correct page "User:Eh! Megan/sig" in the signature box. I'm guessing it's not right. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 13:06, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Eh! Megan! Qermaq's suggestion is a good one. Here are a couple other ideas:
  • Category:Articles needing cleanup — These articles need to be cleaned up, for various reasons (which should be listed on their talk pages).
  • Category:Articles for Discussion — These articles have been proposed to be merged with other articles or deleted. Getting involved with these types of discussions is a good way to find out what makes a good article and might give you some ideas of ways to improve other articles.
  • HRWiki:List of common misspellings — If you click on the links, they'll take you to any pages that contain those misspellings. I'm not sure how much luck you'll have there, but it's worth a try.
  • Lastly, there will probably be a homestarrunner.com update on Monday, so check back then and there will be quite a few things that need to be updated.
Hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions! Trey56 14:11, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Featured articles

Can only sysops create featured articles? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Do you mean, select which ones are featured? If that's what you mean, then no, it's a community decision: HRWiki:Featured Article Selection. Trey56 12:57, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Can only sysops write featured articles. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Okay, I think I see what you mean. No, there's no way to be able to predict if an article will one day be featured when it's written. As you know, anybody can create an article, but featured articles are selected from previously existing articles that are deemed to have major significance to the Homestar Runner body of work. Those decisions are made at the above link. Does this answer your question? Trey56 13:18, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Close, but no. Let's say I wrote about Sports for a featured article. Can anybody create those articles or can only sysops create it. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Anybody can, after consensus is reached about which article will be featured at the above link. Trey56 15:43, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SB2O

Is there any way you could get The Stick and SB2O's history to say I created the page because I did create it. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Fixed. —BazookaJoe 15:26, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I'm Sam the Man but am in Hyperactive's profile

Hi Trey56. This is Hyperactive090. I'm actually Sam the Man at his house. Well, I was wondering, are my pages good enough to be a good page? Hyperactive090--(T) though I'm really User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Hello, Hyperactive090 / Sam the Man. Just so you know, you shouldn't edit the wiki from other users' accounts (see policy here). You should be aware of this, as users have been blocked for similar actions in the past.
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Are you asking if articles that you've created are good enough to be featured on the Main Page? Trey56 19:26, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] ZAGNUT

Oddly enough Wikipedia alwways listed those candy bars on Homestar as ZAGNUTS. It was only us who were unconvinced, be fore you presented your evidence. (Geshmalderborgen 20:06, 17 April 2007 (UTC))

Yeah — it only specifically lists the appearance in 3 Times Halloween Funjob, but it looks like this editor added information in response to the more recent appearances... Trey56 20:21, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] sry

Sorry for being such a newb. I learned up by reading all sorts of policy and such. Is user js enadled here? Cause I can edit better with it. Thnx, --redirectltr.pngDarkest Hour 22:53, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

No problem. Yes, you can access your monobook.js page here. Hope that helps, Trey56 03:35, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sysop?

How do I am becoming a Sysop? Many thank yous, -- Lazylaces Talk 16:56, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

There's a section on the wiki FAQ that addresses this. Keep on tranglin, Trey56 17:08, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] MVU

Congratulation! You won the MVU (The Most Valuable User). You are the 2nd user to win the award. Congrats on the award! User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Thanks :) Trey56 18:52, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template

How do I make a template? Because I want to make a template of all of Strong Bad's Computers, but I don't know how. --Jangles5150 23:39, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Have you read Help:Template? I rewrote that some time ago to make it easier to understand. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:46, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Help:Template has some instructions on it. You can also take a previously existing template and modify it. I see that you started a topic on this at Talk:Strong Bad#Computers — if you decide to create a sample template, you should probably post it in that section before you create a page on it, to get other users' feedback. Once you create a sample, I'm pretty sure users will be more likely to respond. Hope that helps, Trey56 23:47, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
By the way, if you decide to go the route of modifying a previously existing template, {{Strong Sad variations}} or one of the other navigation templates might be a good place to start. Trey56 23:53, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
I still don't get it. How do I start a new template? --Jangles5150 23:54, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Take a look at Template:Strong Sad variations — go ahead and copy it to the Sandbox, and the things you need to change are the text and links. Give it a try, and if you get stuck, go ahead and save the page (again, in the Sandbox). Trey56 23:58, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
What do you want me to change about it, and ill try my best. --Jangles5150 00:07, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, that's an example of a template that might be of the form you'd use for the various computers. Use the syntax of that template, but replace the text with what would be appropriate for a computer navigation template. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:10, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh. Groovy. --Jangles5150 00:11, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I made it. Should I put it on the Strong Bad talk page? --Jangles5150 00:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Looks good (I made one tweak to the link of the title). Go ahead and post it on the talk page, if you like, and let's see what people think about it. Trey56 00:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Did that. --Jangles5150 00:21, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Sweet — I'll stop by and provide my input sometime soon... Trey56
Ok. Thanks for all the help with, like, everything.--Jangles5150 00:23, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
No prob :) Trey56 00:24, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

smooth, my friend. you got the math problem right. I'll probably make like a user box or something as a reward, so check back often.

Thanks! If I add any more userboxes on my other page, they'll creep into my NES Endings section and push down the image, so I'm gonna keep it here :) Trey56 16:32, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for telling me

Sure, upload bigger versions of the two images and use them in userboxes.

Okay, cool — thanks a lot! Trey56 21:26, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merging into another page

Hey, I need some help. How do I merge a page into another page that already exists? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

It depends on the pages, really. But generally speaking, once there's consensus on a talk page to do this, then look for any places in the permanent article where the new information might already be listed, and then add in anything that's missing. You may or may not have to create a new section on the page for the new information. Hope this helps, Trey56 16:28, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
Not really. Let's say I wanted to merge Burninating into Trogdor. How could I merge that? Every time a try to merge a page into a page that already exists, it won't let me. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Oh, you're trying to do it with the "move" tab — that won't work. You have to edit the articles manually. Trey56 20:24, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
You can't really "move" a page into another if that's what you're trying to do. Mediawiki is designed to not allow anyone to do that. The only way to "move" into an existing page is to first delete the target page (an admin would have to do that). However, I doubt that is your intention here, so like Trey said: if you want to merge two articles you have to do it by hand, thus carefully you must "look for any places in the permanent article where the new information might already be listed, and then add in anything that's missing." There is no automated way of doing that. --Stux 20:27, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank-you, both of you. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

[edit] Response to comment left on my talk page

See title... You made a bit of an oops. I think you may need to have your vision checked or something. Check my talk page for the response. Yadaman 22:18, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, you're absolutely right — sorry about that. Trey56 22:38, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] My page

Could you fix my page? it's all messed up. -- Lazylaces Talk 12:15, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Looks like Shwoo fixed it. Laters, Trey56 14:10, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox

How do I make a userbox? Because I want to make one for the quotes thing on my page. --Jangles5150 19:49, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Take something like this:
{{userbox|border=#000000|mainbkgd=#FF6103|codebkgd=#000000|codecolor=#FF6103|code=RC|msg=This user patrols '''[[Special:Recentchanges|Recent Changes]]'''.}}
Just edit the parts you want to change. The six digit things are color codes for the various parts of the userbox, the "code" is the text that appears on the left, and the rest is the text that appears in the main box. Let me know if you have any questions! Trey56 19:55, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Ok. Cool. Thanks. --Jangles5150 19:56, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Monobook help

I need help with my monobook. Can you help me? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Unfortunately, I don't know that much about that, as you may be able to tell from my monobook.css page. Sorry about that. Trey56 16:26, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How do you work this thing?

I don't get this talk page. Culd you please explain to me how to use it? Anyway, I left this here to thank you for correcting my previous and very large blunder before about the Atari Dragon. Go ahead and just get rid of this section when you've read it. Thanks again. Signed, 72.133.214.202

No problem at all — which talk page are you asking about? Let me know if I can help you out with anything else. Best, Trey56 01:51, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
You might start at the Talk Page ettiquette page, it might help you to start. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:26, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SBemails

Can I make the transcript for the next SBEmail? I think I understand how the transcripts are formatted, and also, there's really not much else to do. I really didn't know who to ask, so I asked you. So, yeah. --Jangles5150 19:54, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry this post turned out to be so long, but if you have time to read it, it should be helpful information:
Hey there — the only way to reserve a transcript is to be around when the toon is released and put {{transcriptinprogress|Jangles5150}} in the Transcript section. Assuming you're from the U.S., they're usually released in the wee hours of Monday morning or very late Sunday evening. On occasion, though, (usually when they post an "email soon" or similar Main Page message), the update is released Monday afternoon or evening. So, if you want to write a transcript, you'll have to be around right when the update is released, and I highly recommend being in IRC (particularly hrwiki-RC) to get first notice of when that happens.
Other than that, there really is a lot to do other than writing the transcript for the week's update. First, there are always a lot of other things that need to be updated after the week's new toon has released. Second, at any time of the week, check in on Recent Changes (or get a live feed of these at hrwiki-RC) and go through the edits people have made. A lot of times you'll find poor edits that need to be modified or reverted, and a lot of times you'll find talk page discussions that you can get involved on. As you do this more and more, you'll get a better idea of what kinds of things need to be done on the wiki throughout the week beyond the weekly update, and you may even find a project that you want to be consistently involved in.
Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any questions about anything! Trey56 21:49, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Oh, nevermind then. I have sleeping... time... in the wee hours of Monday morning. So that's out of the question. I thought only sysops could revert, though. I do get involved in some talk page discussions sometimes. Thanks for the info, --Jangles5150 22:02, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
No problem. If I were you, I'd hold out for an "email soon" message and try to snag the transcript on Monday afternoon/evening. That happens fairly often. Trey56 22:04, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I'll try to do that. But until then, I'll just keep looking at Recent Changes. --Jangles5150 22:07, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Okay, sounds good. If I see any other projects that I think you might be interested in working on, I'll try to leave a message on your talk page. Trey56 22:10, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Cool. --Jangles5150 22:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

i was trying to edit naked homestar and i got some weird redirect crap, but was unable to fix a typo, because the text of the page wasnt there... how do i edit this page? thanks TheDude 13:14, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Strange — when I click on the link above, I have no problems. Does using this link (Naked Homestar) help at all? Trey56 13:21, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Up and Running!

Hey I got my Nintendo Challenge up and running on my userpage. Thanks again for letting me do this! I betcha you can figure out the question. It is pretty easy. :D TheYellowDart(t/c) 19:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Whee! Trey56 21:21, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
I got another one next week that won't be so hard. :P --TheYellowDart(t/c) 21:23, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright

Could I copy your NES trivia thing please? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Sure, although Theyellowdart is doing the same thing as well. The more people that do the same trivia game, the less fun each person's will be, I fear. I guess I'd recommend that you try to think of your own Homestar Runner-related trivia game, but I don't have any objections to you copying mine if you want. Trey56 01:11, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
Thank you very much. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

[edit] Personal Image

Even though I'm under 18, can I still have a personal image of myself, if it's impossible to see my face? Because I have a picture of me playing Bass at a local club/bar/concert hall, and you can't really see my face in it. So, could I use that? --Jangles5150 22:14, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, as long as you're not under 13. That's the limit stated on HRWiki:Youth protection. Hope that helps, Trey56 22:15, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
But apparently you're turning 13 tomorrow! Homestar-Winner (talk) 22:18, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I am turning 13 tomarrow. Wow. That was weird. So, I'll upload it tomarrow. --Jangles5150 22:22, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Happy birthday tomorrow, then! Trey56 22:24, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Uploading Images

Do you know how you upload images on a Mac compy? Homestar-Winner (talk) 00:32, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

To upload images, just use the Special:Upload feature — if you're wanting to know how to take a screenshot, see this discussion. Let me know if you have any more questions. Trey56 02:24, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I uploaded this image but messed up on it. Could you delete this picture and I make another one? Also, how do you make an image you uploaded a personal image? Homestar-Winner (talk) 11:40, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Or get Irfanview. It's much easier then any thing else that uploads images. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 11:43, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I went ahead and deleted that for you. You make an image a personal image by including {{personal-image|Homestar-winner}} in the description. Loafing 11:47, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oh I see.

That makes sense. Thanks for correcting me.--24.182.104.174 03:38, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

No problem, it was an easy mistake to make. After my edit, Phlip made a note of his outfit, which should help clarify it for others. See ya around, Trey56 03:41, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Subpage

Hi-dee-ho Trey! (that's from Home Improvement) I found another subpage. DNA Evidence had one here. I already told him it'd have to be deleted. He's already moved it, so could you delete it now? Homestar-Winner (talk) 21:36, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Okay, taken care of. Thanks, Trey56 22:28, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About my page.

Sorries! I was going to remove it yesterday, but I forgot. See, I was at school and in the middle of a "fight" about some bands on last.fm, and the school computer's Internet Explorer wouldn't send comments. [That's why I like Firefox better. That computer sucked, anyway.] The school allows HRWiki somehow, so I added it to my page and put it on last.fm later. I'll remove it now. Thank you for reminding me!
