Transcript

{The stage is seen. A notice comes up over it:}

After the 'House That Gave Sucky Treats,'
(2001) fans could vote on their favorite
costume. This cartoon was going to
announce the results. But right about
that time, we started making the Strong
Bad Emails regularly, and this was
left unfinished until we just remembered
it a few days ago. We went ahead and
finished it up.

{The words disappear and the scene cuts to the same stage, now with a podium and two huge golden Homestar statues.}

THE ANNOUNCER: {voiceover} We now return to The Second Annual Homestarloween Awards!

{The words "The 2nd Annual HOMESTARLOWEEN AWARDS" appear over the screen.}

THE ANNOUNCER: {voiceover} Please welcome The King of Town!

{The King of Town walks onstage holding a Homestar statuette. A few claps are heard, followed by booing.}

THE KING OF TOWN: {moving his head back and forth — in the wrong direction — and speaking in a very forced manner, indicating he is reading from a cue card} Well, since I'm presenting the award...

{Cut to Homsar, who is holding the cue card upside-down.}

THE KING OF TOWN: ...for best costume, I guess we know who got the least amount of votes.

{As noted on Homsar's sheet, the audience starts laughing. Cut to Homestar Runner, Marzipan, and Pom Pom sitting in the audience, who also laugh. Cut back to the King of Town.}

THE KING OF TOWN: {sadly} Oh... my life is a joke... Oh, uh, anyways, the nominees for best costume are:

{An image of Marzipan in her costume appears.}

THE KING OF TOWN: Marzipan as Joey Ramone!

{The audience claps. Cut to Homestar and Marzipan.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: What? That was you?!

{Cut back to the King of Town. As he speaks, the image changes to Homestar.}

THE KING OF TOWN: Homestar Runner as the Greatest American Hero!

{The audience claps again. Cut back to Homestar.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: What? That was me?!

{Cut back to the King of Town. As he speaks, the image changes to Strong Bad.}

THE KING OF TOWN: And Strong Bad as {losing enthusiasm quickly} Carmen Sandiego.

{The audience claps yet again. Cut to Strong Bad, Strong Mad, and The Cheat.}

STRONG BAD: It's in the bag, boys.

{Cut back to the King of Town. The images of the three nominees seated are on the side of the screen.}

THE KING OF TOWN: And the award for best costume goes to... {pulls the name out of an envelope. A drumroll is heard. Extremely unenthusiastically:} Strong Bad as Carmen Sandiego.

{The audience claps loudly as the scene cuts to Strong Bad's gang. Music starts.}

STRONG BAD: {jumping up} Oh, yes! In your face, Homestar! {singing} Oh! Guess who won? I won a game, a-da-dah! Ba-da-da-da-dah! I won the game! Tonight! At the award! Ceremony! Oh yeah!

{Cut to the podium. Strong Bad pushes the King of Town away, and as he does so, the King's crown falls on Strong Bad's head. Strong Bad steps up.}

STRONG BAD: First I want to thank The Cheat for helping me to cheat.

{An image of a teary-eyed The Cheat appears.}

STRONG BAD: We did it, little buddy! {The Cheat waves to Strong Bad.} And I want to thank my agent Bubs;

{The image of The Cheat disappears and an image of Bubs in a tuxedo takes his place.}

STRONG BAD: ...Bubs, my producer; my director, Bubs. And of course...

{The image of Bubs disappears.}

STRONG BAD: ...my super-hot girlfriend, who just recently got sucked into a wormhole, so she's probably in some other dimension... right now...

{The applause and music return.}

STRONG BAD: I did it for you, baby! I'm out, peace, love!

{Strong Bad descends from the podium. Cut to Homestar and Marzipan.}

MARZIPAN: It's okay, Homestar, I liked your costume the best.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {whispering} Shhh! I think I'm about to win!

{Cut to a wide shot of the auditorium; Homestar and Marzipan are the only ones there. Crickets chirp. The lights go out. After a moment, Marzipan leaves. The scene dims out.}

Commentary Transcript

(Commentary by: Mike Chapman, Matt Chapman)

MIKE: {reading in fake announcer-type voice} "After the 'House That Gave Sucky Treats', 2001, fans —"

MATT: {overlapping, speaking gibberish in even more exaggerated announcer-type tone}

MIKE: "This cartoon—" {begins speaking normally} All right, we won't just read what's there, but this was a cartoon that we had initially made for after the 2001 Halloween cartoon—

MATT: {simultaneously} Yeah.

MIKE: —announcing the results of what the voting... for people's favorite costume was.

MATT: The first two years of Halloween cartoons had voting at the end for your favorite costume.

MIKE: Yeah, and it wasn't anything fancy. It just sent us an email that just said— {laughs}

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: —what it was.

MATT: I remember that you got an auto-response for— or, no, when you clicked on it it automatically filled in your email, 'cause I'd learned all these things about fields—text fields and stuff—and for the, if you voted on The Cheat, uh, it said "I Choose YOU, Cheatachu" {enunciates each syllable in 'Cheat-a-chu' separately}.

MIKE: The King of Town's eyes look a little big there.

MATT: Yeah, I think they're a little big. They're a little swollen.

MIKE: He probably just went to the eye doctor.

MATT: {laughs} They're dilated.

MIKE: Yeah.

{Short pause until Homestar Runner says "That was me?"}

MATT: I... think I started making this, like, at the, shortly after we made the cartoon. Like, kind of in tandem with this. Uh, I remember making graphics at work, of course {both laugh}, for these. {Pause until camera cuts to Strong Bad} Um....

MIKE: The little dance.

MATT: {simultaneously} I just animated this dance the other day.

MIKE: Yeah, so we finished the cartoon. It was done... most of the sounds were recorded, but not all of them, right?

MATT: Yeah, the very end.

MIKE: Strong Bad—

MATT: This speech.

MIKE: —is new.

MATT: Yeah. You can kinda tell, actually. The quality of the sound. Um, I hate award shows, actually, Mike, in real life.

MIKE: Yeah, me too.

MATT: I despise them.

MIKE: They never... the, the jokes are always really s— much worse than you would expect the bad award show jokes to be.

MATT: Um-hm.

MIKE: And people's, uh, thank-you speeches are much more awkward than you would hope that people's awkward thank-you speeches would be.

MATT: {laughs} It's true and uh...

MIKE: I seem— I fee— {speaking gibberish in accent} de la crontera...

MATT: Lately it seems like they make jokes about how the jokes are bad, too.

MIKE: Yeah, and they're even worse than when they're trying to be funny.

MATT: Right.

MIKE: It's all that bearded guy from Hollywood Squares. What's his name?
