Suggestion

In the "Preferences" page, the user is prompted to offer their "Nickname". I know of at least one example where a user has thought this meant "put whatever you like here". But of course we expect that what's put in "Nickname" will be the same as or very close to the user's username. Any chance we can reword that so new users will know how to create policy-compliant signatures? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 06:17, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't know, I've never minded users going by a name other than their username as long as they're consistent about it and the "nickname" isn't taken. However, that doesn't mean I necessarily encourage doing that, because it can get confusing at times — especially for us RecentChanges junkies. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 07:20, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, we have asked people to change their nicks before, because they were either offensive or something like MattChapman. I think it's a good idea to give a few hints as to what's acceptable and encouraged. Loafing 07:36, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
I remember back when I joined, I thought that "Nickname" was simply for "What shall we address you by other than your user name?". Perhaps the code can be altered to say "Signature" or something of the like. — Lapper (talk) 15:21, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
At 'Kipedia it does already say "Signature" rather than nickname, and this seems to be a lot more logical to me. Heimstern Läufer 23:41, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
I would also prefer it to say "Signature". When I was young it caused me to experience confusion when typing four tildes created "Salty" rather than "Lappy 486" (my old username). I thought it just added it to some type of profile users have like on a forum. SaltyTalk! 00:47, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Template help!

I am trying to make two templates for my site [psupedia.org] (looks like a combination of the H*R Wiki and the English Wiki) but I can't get them to stand side-by-side. Whenever I try to do them, they merge together in a big ugly mess. Can someone please help me out that ? : )

If you would like to, you can post it in my talk page or this IP's one if you are willing to help, it might be easier on my site because the images I have in the code are enabled and I don't think this site would like having that. I expect you guys are very good with coding and you could finish it up soon, because my neck is probably on the line with the site admin there! hehe. 68.194.9.27 17:03, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Upon first glance, it appears you've forgotten to close all four of your "tables", and that they are all nested within each other, creating a big mess. I'd recommend checking out Help:Table for information on how to use tables properly. — Lapper (talk) 17:29, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Lapper, wish I asked sooner. :P Also sorry if I ruined the page a little, my other edit make the width larger than it should be. 68.194.9.27 17:34, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
It's fine, I've broken it down so that it doesn't overflow. And you're very welcome. Good luck. — Lapper (talk) 17:36, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Ugh, I tried it again using the help guide and your advice but it's still merging. I closed the tables and I tried variations to replace the '!'s with '|'s and '|+'. I tried a lot of variations and it still isn't changing. :( 68.194.9.27 18:29, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Drop me a line around 21:00 utc. We'll work it out together. — Lapper (talk) 14:34, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Halloween skin cont'd

Note: continued from HRWiki:Main Page Talk Archive 15#Halloween skin

Well, given that coloring is not a pre-Halloween toon, changing the skin is a little less urgent. We don't have to put the skin up for a couple more days, unless you guys + Dot com are ready to go. And from what's written on the wiki, some things are not entirely agreed upon yet. —BazookaJoe 06:03, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm agreed on whatever you want to do. =3 --DorianGray
Punkin stencil rotation in the upper right corner? Official site link logo change to uncarved pumpakin? We will use Image:Wikiween.png (sorry you didn't see that, FireBird). The orange and gray main page tables look awesome. Do we have our spooky forest silhouette? Is Dot com ready to go when we are ready (I think I know the answer)? Is All On? Hafta go bafroom? =3? —BazookaJoe 06:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, they just released a Malloween Podstar, so I guess they're all up in the Halloween season. Why aren't we? D= --DorianGray

Canada $$

Could someone please send TBC an email about quotes in CAD not USD. I would but my email is down rright now so thanks

Why the urgency? Oh, for the Canadian Decemberween sale? You can use Google or another website to convert USD to CAD. —BazookaJoe 23:20, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

subtitles

The subtitles project has become very big, and I think that it deserves it's own link on the main page, as it's actually pretty hard to find otherwise. - link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 00:24, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

It's currently linked from HRWiki:The Stick, and there are links to the subtitles scripts on every toon article (on the left hand side, under the "external links" box). But most people will probably not have noticed this. I don't know how it would fit on the main page, though. Loafing 00:30, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I was thinking under Miscellany...- link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 00:37, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
The main page is generally for Homestar-only content. The Stick is for Wiki and community created content. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 13:33, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I'd really like to have some kind of "Did you know?" message available to the public informing them of the use of subtitles, once the project is mostly complete & well checked. Otherwise, not many people are going to notice or benefit from your hard work. This is definitely worth main page inclusion, but it should be noted in a novel yet appropriate way. —BazookaJoe 13:53, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Matt's Birthday coming up

What are we planning on doing for Matt's birthday (11/1). It's a week or so away and I think it would be neat if we did something so that we all can be involved. I R F 09:49, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

That would be cool — I can't think of anything; any ideas? Trey56 10:24, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I was thinking about making up a huge card and have everyone submit a message by jpg or png to a central person such as JoeyDay, Tom, or It's dot com. Then have that person compile all the meassages and take it to a Kinkos and have them print it on a large poster board and then mail it to them. I would be glad to contribute via paypal to the cost of printing and mailing this card and I think others would too. I R F 12:18, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
The forum guys did that last year... they just emailed it to him, I think. --phlip TC 12:23, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I never got to sign that card. It sounded like a good idea, though. — Lapper (talk) 12:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Email is okay, but I think it would neat to snail mail a card this year. I R F 12:54, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, we'd better hurry, then, whatever it is. :( —BazookaJoe 13:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Idea
I was thinking about something like this →
I think whoever lives the closest to GA should be the one to mail to allow for the shortest postal delivery time (although I can do it if no one else...I live in VA) I R F 13:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

That sounds good if you are willing to get it fancy printed and a-spensive mailed. Or someone else can still volunteer. I think, as a suggestion, people should include their location, parts of real name, nickname, and an optional note, like this:

BazookaJoe 14:03, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

This does sound like something that would be better suited to be discussed on Forum though... --phlip TC 15:31, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Phlip. This really isn't something that has to do with collecting and organizing information about Homestar Runner, it's more of a community activity type thing. Someone want to start a thread there and post the link here? -- Tom 15:39, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Except that this would be something that would come from the wiki community, not the forum community. If it was on the forum regular wiki users such as myself would not see it. I R F 15:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Phlip, Tom, I don't agree with you. The forum and wiki communities are different. I'm not part of the forum as well as some forumers not part of the wiki. I would love to sign a message from the wiki people, as I missed the one from last year. I R F: You have my full support. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 16:12, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm agreeing with E.L. Cool, here; I don't have an account on the forum, and besides, this is an HRWiki proposal, not an HRWikiForum one. — Lapper (talk) 17:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Agree. This is a wiki birthday card. The forumers did their own card last year. —BazookaJoe 20:19, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

In order to reduce recent changes flooding, it would probably be a good idea for all those who wish to send Matt a happy birthday to e-mail the designated card-maker. The card maker will update the image with well-wishes and signatures once he or she receives a good amount of e-mails. In order not to leave some semi-active wiki users in the dust, I suggest we post a advisory on Template:recentchangesnotice. —BazookaJoe 20:32, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I'd be willing to volunteer to make the graphic, but if we do choose to go snail-mail I'm not certainly sending it from here... it's probably too late to send it by snail mail anyway if we want it to arrive in time... --phlip TC 20:50, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I'd be willing to print it out and mail it. If we print it out and have it priority mailed by Saturday (10/28) morning, that should be enough time, right? Also, I do live in Illinois, so it may be better if someone closer does it... Trey56 20:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
If it gets dropped into First Class mail a couple of states away on early Monday morning, it could possibly make it to Decatur by Nov 1 if we are lucky. Otherwise it would be Nov 2. Or, somebody from any state could shed a few extra dollars, send it through Priority Mail, and have it make it by Nov 1 for sure. —BazookaJoe 20:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
With Priority Mail, I think we should send it out on Saturday at the latest. With Express Mail, we could get away with Monday (although that's very expensive). Trey56 21:00, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Edit conflicted: Oh wait, they would have to Priority it on Saturday in order to be 100% sure that it will make it by Wednesday. I think it's pretty likely to make it by Wednesday if someone in a nearby state sends it Priority early Monday morning. —BazookaJoe 21:02, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
That's true (for some reason I was thinking that Nov. 1 was on Tuesday). And mailing it on Monday will give more time for us to gather enough signatures to fill up the page. Well, Virginia's pretty close to Georgia — what do you think Invisible Robot Fish? Trey56 21:19, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Sure, if no one else is closer I can send it on monday. I will go to the store tomorrow and check out shipping and display options. I have both a paypal account and a UPS account so I could send it out from work on Monday easy. The more I was thinking about this, the more low-tech I am thinking. I was think about buying some poster board, perhaps making it look like the one from caffeine and print out all of your sigs and glue them on the board. I R F 22:03, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

We should start spreading the word and collecting signatures soon. There are only so many days left. I suggest we use BazookaJoe's template for the signatures. IRF, as the card maker, you would be the best person to collect the sigs. Would you prefer to get them by email or on your talk page? Are you planning to print them out in colour or black and white? Should we have a rough guideline about the size of the signatures? (oh, still so many questions) Loafing 22:21, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Color is fine. If you just want to sign via text, use my talk page. If you have a graphic or image for your sig, post your link on my talk page but please adhear to the image use policiy. Size doesn't matter because I will size them to all fit. I R F 23:09, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I'd Like to sign it--Marvelrulez

This is a little embarassing to admit so late, but I don't know Matt's mailing address ** blushes **. I think JoeyDay knows it (since he got a letter from them), but I don't see him on that often. Is this info available anywhere? I R F 15:18, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm sending you an email. — It's dot com 15:27, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Please re-send it. I just updated my email address in preferences because I can't check my personal email account at work. I R F 15:58, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Little thing that's bugging me:

Can someone remove the " (English)" from the OpenSearch description of the search engine? I understand why it would be useful at a multi-lingual Wiki like Wikipedia, but it seems a bit unnecessary for this site... --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 22:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Whoa skin

This skin is awexome and all, who made it? But it's hurting my eyes SO MUCH! Could we also possibly have a Decemberween skin too? --Homfrog 10:45, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Pretty cool, huh? The discussion and people involved can be found here and here. Trey56 10:59, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
How about a D'ween logo a little like this:Image:Dween wiki.PNG Marvelrulez (Talk | contribs) 14:49, 27 October 2006 (UTC) (left unsigned)
That's a nifty idea, but let's just enjoy H'ween today. We can worry about D'ween when we get closer to it. — It's dot com 14:21, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
