[edit] Block list

I've noticed that the block list is the same at the Fanstuff Wiki. Is this intentional? RickTommy talk 23:02, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

That's because the databases for the users and blocks are shared. — It's dot com 23:15, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Speculation?

I commented on a discussion and someone said that my thing was "just speculation". Is there a definition on this wiki for "speculation"? I'm confused with the whole thing... doctorwho295 22 March 2010

Speculation has to do with looking into things with no factual basis; talking about what things could be instead of what things are. This wiki doesn't document speculation because it cannot be proven true. However, we do have a forum for open discussion where speculation is welcome. You have to create a separate account over there. as for the discussion in question, there is no way to prove what kind of disease any of them have, and any guesses as to what disease it could be can't be proven true. hope this helps The Knights Who Say Ni 18:52, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

I just wanted to add something. Do you think we should do a page on speculation for all the users? Just looking at numerous discussions, I noticed that about 15% of them were speculation. Is that a big enough issue to address? Should we wait and see if there is more? doctorwho295 30 March 2010

Think about that idea - Would you have liked to read an encyclopedia with speculation? Say you read about some president, and at the end of the article someone speculates that he thinks the president did some nasty things but doesn't give any evidence. That's not a very good encyclopedia, if you ask me. Any knowledge you gain becomes immediately questionable.
But since we know that people in their nature like to read about others' opinions, the set up The Forum so you can speculate, talk, discuss, jibber, jabber, and say what you want about Homestar. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 04:58, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
So, yes? No? It doesn't matter if there is a forum, people still put speculation on the pages and in the discussions. I'm an amateur, so the page would come out... well... bad. If anyone can help out that would be great. doctorwho295 2 April 2010
Just because we constantly get speculation does not mean we should make an article for it. Your house gets dirty all the time, right? That doesn't mean you should make a room for dirt to keep it in; it means you should clean the whole place. Unreasonable speculation doesn't belong on any article in our wiki, no matter what, just like dirt doesn't belong in your house. Heimstern Läufer 00:45, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

To The Brothers Chaps? They haven't updated the website in a long time.

Some say it's because of a baby break. But it's obviously for another reason, given that this break is longer than the previous baby breaks. And speaking of which... RickTommy talk 00:35, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Further discussion should take place on the forum. Bet you guys already knew that ;-) Loafing 05:26, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Why was the Baby Break announcement removed from the forum? RickTommy talk 00:35, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] "Features" section on Main Page

Don't you think the YouTube channel has become important enough to be placed here, as a link to the article on YouTube? Flicky1991 15:56, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Possibly. But that'd be an excellent thing to suggest on the HRWiki:Featured Article Selection page. StrongAwesome 16:59, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Signature

How do I have one of those "changey" sigs? I've created User:RickTommy/sig, but no matter what I do, I just can't get my signature to match that one. RickTommy (edits)

Unintended consequences: I'm trying to upload the FeedBurner picture for the page, and I'm getting an error saying that I don't have permission to create new pages. Is this due to the randomization of sigs? wbwolf (t | ed) 05:39, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
RickTommy: You have to put {{User:Your username/sig}} in your preferences. I fixed it for you. Wbwolf: I'll upload the picture. — It's dot com 05:43, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] APRIL FOOLS!!

Okay, at first I only saw that the wiki's name had changed in the page title, and I was thinking, "Most. Subtle. April Fools' joke. Ever." Then I came back after someone on the forum said there was vandalism on the Main Page, and I gotta admit, this isn't one of the better jokes the Mods have pulled off. I liked the scrambled pages better. I expect more. :P --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 04:46, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

It's not the only thing we tried, but we couldn't get our first choice to work. Let's just say I need to study up on Google's API and maybe I'll be ready for next year. Besides, who says that's the gag? Anydangway, Mike and I had a pretty good laugh about the dumb animal characters nickname the other day, so I figured why not. — It's dot com 05:21, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank You for suning it up --114.77.52.233 06:20, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm curious as to whether Jay actually changed his sig to The Human Wedgie, seeing how I myself certainly did not change mine to Meatball Face Butt. (And now I see why you specified that it might not be the gag) --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 06:27, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Super Martyo Brother: I got the same one, and i hope you are less offended by it than i am. Seeing as though I'm too offended negatively surprised to use the four tildes here 06:32, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
It's not nearly as offensive as that picture you put on your user page. (All of the sigs are from the Homestar Runner Dumb Animal Character body of work, after all.) But if you're that upset about it, I'll randomly generate another one for you. — It's dot com 06:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
(replying to prancibald) better. though it's still not what i would have preferred, i don't think anybody's is, so i'm not going to complain. (since then) wait, did it just change again while i was trying to edit? The Knights Who Say Ni 06:44, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
I forgot that the function is tied to the specific user, and so I had to edit out my name. When I did, it automatically changed again. Okay, everybody, if you change your sig, you might get stuck with a silly one, so watch out. Or, who knows, you might get a cool one. Either way, it's just for one day, so no more complaints. It's dot com 06:57, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
DC: wow, sorry i got that out of you just three hours into the day. normally it takes more like 23 or 24, and i think i would have preferred it that way. it makes it more fun to act like nothing is out of the ordinary just because it's the 91st day of the year. like last year, when i came by at the end of the day, i was trying to appear oblivious to the particular day. i do apologize for putting you through all that changing my signature. [edit] Mike was in the Ghostbusters?

If your read the credits to Ghostbusters 2, you'll find the name Micheal Chapman. Is this Mike? --66.205.143.105 23:17, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

There's a highly unlikely chance that is him. But, I've encountered many Mike Chapmans so I'm not sure.--Record307 Talk/Contribs 00:46, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
Michael Chapman was the cinematographer on Ghostbusters II. Our Mike would have been about 14 or 15 when it was produced. I don't think they let 15-year-olds have major production roles on films, Maeby Fünke notwithstanding. — It's dot com 01:49, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Xeriouxly Forxe

Now that April Fool's is over, can we replace the Wiki Main Page's picture with one that shows the redesigned characters? BBG 21:21, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Nah, I bet that there's still a lot of people who haven't seen it yet. We don't want to spoil the surprise. And, even if every single Homestar fan has seen it, I don't really see a reason to change it. StrongAwesome 21:34, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] The Other Other wiki

Seeing how we seem to rely on TVTropes more (in fact, I found the website through the HRWiki) should we have a new link for it, like the Wikipedia and Youtube? I'm thinking it should be the trademark T with a lampshade on it (lampshade hanging?). Does that sound like a good idea? I know of at least three pages that link there, all made within the year. --Jellote wuz here 14:35, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

I got the logo, but I'm not sure it is formatted correctly. Can we use it at all, or should we redo it?--Jellote wuz here 22:47, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
We'll ruin your life.
Hmmm... Since the link to TvTropes almost always appear in running text, I don't think a logo next to it would look good. Try to imagine how all the Fun Facts would look if every link had a W Wikipedia logo next to it. The text would be unreadable. Favicons next to links are almost always used for bulleted links like Watch. But I do support adding TvTropes to the list of sites we use this sort of wikilinks. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 05:43, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Done. PmWiki is set up kinda screwy, so the interwiki link won't work in all cases. If there's a lot of such cases I can set it up it a different but less streamlined way. — It's dot com 15:02, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Tvtropes.org has been down for me (and it was down for downforeveryoneorjustme) for several hours, since yesterday. ColdReactive 15:57, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Hm, that site says it's down, you say it's down... I'm getting it, though. --Jay (Gobble) 16:47, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Its up, which is good news. So now all that's left is redoing the links.--Jellote wuz here 19:34, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Dangereque 2?

Why isn't there a Dangeresque 2 game? I saw Dangeresque 1 and Dangeresque 3 but no Dangeresque 2. Is Dangeresque 2 somewhere I missed? I really like Dangeresque games. I played every series of Dangeresque except for Dangeresque 2.

1: Dangeresque 1 is not a game. It is a movie seen in sbemail 106. 2: Dangeresque 2 is featured in sbemail 80, stunt double. 3: The game you refered to is Dangeresque ROOMISODE 1. I suggest watching Strong Bad Email #106 to see the real D1. 76.117.14.237 17:11, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] HRW:CRYSTAL?

WP:CRYSTAL is on Wikipedia, do we have one here on HRWiki? ColdReactive 21:06, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

We don't have a specific policy page on the topic, but I'm sure we adhere to a similar standard. --DorianGray 21:08, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
I agree with ColdReactive. It would give us a reason for people to delete talk-page comments that talk about "Hey we should make a page about Dangeresque Roomiside 2 even though it hasn't been released yet!" Overall it's a good idea. Nova Scotia 21:12, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
There should be a separate delete template for that reason showing a crystalball like in Tales of the Macabre for an icon... Maybe have it saying, "The HRWiki is not a Crystal Ball, this page is currently pending deletion for this reason." Or maybe have a warning template with such an icon? ColdReactive 21:15, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
That could be a good template idea, but the problem is we might never even use it. Nova Scotia 21:17, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Wait, where are people making comments like you describe above? Where is a specific location that a policy or template such as this would be used? — It's dot com 21:24, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Dot com, I've seen a few comments like that while I was just browsing as an IP. Nova Scotia 21:26, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Right; I'm asking someone to point to one. — It's dot com 21:32, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
It looks like such a thing would belong under HRWiki:What HRWiki is not. you can find a lot of places where some of the more experienced users tell people who have posted speculative comments to take it to the forum. Here are a few. I think that's what y'all are talking about anyway The Knights Who Say Ni 21:49, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
In that case, we already have stated guidelines, and we already deal with it by pointing people to the forum. I'm not sure what else can be or would need to be done. — It's dot com 21:56, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Why are the non-HR forums on the HRWiki forum locked?

http://forum.hrwiki.org/viewforum.php?f=12 - I can't make new topics, which I want to do. ColdReactive 23:25, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

The off-topic forums were locked over a year and a half ago in a restructuring of the forum. As far as I'm aware, there are no plans to reopen them at this point. Heimstern Läufer 23:30, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Then where should we converse off-topic/non-hr stuff? ColdReactive 00:47, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Privately in PM, or on another website. --DorianGray 03:33, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Collapsible Table?

Just wondering, can I make collapsible tables on HRWiki? It would be nice for my news box element on my userpage. ColdReactive 04:33, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

You mean the news box that's against the user space policy? — It's dot com 04:38, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
So you like to not discuss things that are not HR-specific? Then how do you guys pass the time on the site? ColdReactive 04:40, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I didn't say that. I just don't discuss non-H*R stuff here. Regardless, a news box that (1) doesn't have to do with Homestar Runner, (2) doesn't have to do with a user's Homestar Runner experience, (3) doesn't even reveal personal information about a user that is relevant to this site, and (4) is rather bloggish does not belong on a user page. — It's dot com 04:46, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Would be nice if we could discuss it on the forum, but oh well. Guess I'll go back to facebook then. ColdReactive 04:50, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, we the admins consider it from time to time, but we're still put off by the idea of having to mod it. — It's dot com 04:58, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Could always get more mods that work for pencil shavings. ColdReactive 05:50, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Not really looking to do that either. — It's dot com 11:56, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Multiple Users For One Real Life person?

if someone can login to an old username, does that mean they can have another username? User Eggs tree lists that he has another account named Strong_Bad that apparently s/he can login to--and it is advertised prominently as a fanstuff account. ColdReactive 00:56, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

The user you mention is mistaken. He seems to have simply not noticed yet. Users are not permitted to use two accounts at the same time, and although names at the knowledge base and fanstuff previously could be separate, they must now be the same because they are tied to one account. — It's dot com 01:47, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

wait a minute here, YAY! YOU viewed my page! It's me! eggs tree!!! but, so you know, I always change my page a little bit...so click here to view my page...again!

Of course, there's always the intentional creation of making multiple users to aid in trolling known as making sock puppets, which must be looked out for. --Homestar tiger 17:28, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
We know about sockpuppet accounts. In fact, Eggs tree was actually caught trying to create two sockpuppet accounts. We like to think we're pretty good at catching them. The Knights Who Say Ni 18:06, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh. Well that must be something new because I've never seen that before on any wiki... nova scotia 22:04, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
If you mean wikia, then that's understandable, as most free-to-make or remote hosted wikis do not use media wiki, or--like InvisionFree for Invision Power Board--use a heavily modified and stripped down version of it. ColdReactive 22:50, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
You are incorrect. Wikia does, in fact, use MediaWiki, as do most of the others. — Defender1031*Talk 23:07, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Official Twitter account

It seems likely that homestarrunner and hrwiki are the "official" twitter feeds. Shouldn't this be listed somewhere? Who maintains them? - J. J. http://zepfanman.com 05:35, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm... I don't know who maintains hrwiki, but it seems almost identical to homestarrunner. The same bit.ly links even, and the updates are one the same minute. I don't really knows how these things work... Can it be a bot or something? Anyone of the other sysops know who made the hrwiki account? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 06:18, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, it appears to me that since the only person homestarrunner is following is hrwiki, and vice-versa. Think these two accounts might be ran by the same person (or at least ran by a bot)? nova scotia 06:32, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Somebody else registered homestarrunner and then later gave it to us. We registered hrwiki so no one else would. We didn't have much use for them, so we set them up to list updates to the official site. We control the feeds, but they're not "official" any more than our list of what's new on the main page is official. We don't publicize them because there are more better ways to get a feed of updates. — It's dot com 18:31, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
So who's the person who actually adds the updates themselves? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:54, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
If I understand Dot com correctly, it's a bot that just reads our changes to {{whatsnew}} and reports them. — Defender1031*Talk 22:15, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, although it's indirect. Changes to our what's new section are reported in our RSS feed, and twitterfeed uses that to update the Twitter accounts. — It's dot com 22:52, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Now all we need is to use that Facebook application that updates from Twitter, and then dump to statuses in an RSS feed, and the circle of Web 2.0 will be complete :P. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 04:26, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
