[edit] MediaWiki 1.5

Will the H*R Wiki and the H*R Fanstuff Wiki be upgrading to MediaWiki 1.5?

While I'm here, I'll just outline some of the new features of 1.5:

The English Wikipedia has already upgraded. -- Super Sam 13:30, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I'd suggest waiting a bit. MW 1.5 is still beta, and they keep discovering new and exciting bugs each time they upgrade a different Wikipedia. -- Cyrius 13:45, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)
I think if the Wikipedia has already upgraded, it's good enough for us. -- Super Sam 14:01, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, it's still beta. It looks great, but we are going to wait until it's a stable release. And probably a itsy-bit longer. -- Tom 15:17, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia DELIBERATELY use the betas to help find and iron out bugs (after all, MediaWiki was developed for that site). Beta is not suitable for most sites, as there's almost guaranteed to be problems. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 15:34, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Remember that the Mediawiki developers and the Wikimedia technical crew are pretty well one and the same. When your sysadmins wrote the thing, you can live a little closer to the edge. -- Cyrius 02:08, 3 Jul 2005 (UTC)
And just to drive the point home, MediaWiki 1.5b2 has been released, which fixes some exciting security holes, including at least one SQL injection bug. -- Cyrius 04:34, 7 Jul 2005 (UTC)
MediaWiki 1.5b3 is out. I set a wiki up with it, but I still notice a few bugs. But it looks great. EDSMILDE
Whatever happens, making it doesn't clear the history of the Fanstuff Wiki again. -- 65.188.59.31 02:38, 15 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Articles Needing Merging

I think we should have both a template, and a category for articles that need to be merged. For instance, Cardboard Marzipan should be merged with Minor Alternate Versions (yes, I know this has happened already.) I think the template would go something like this:

Category:Articles Needing Merging

Anybody have any opinions on this? --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 17:31, 7 July 2005 (BST)

Note that we have HRWiki:Projects#Things to Merge and HRWiki:Cleanup#Merge and Redirect already. -- Tom 00:20, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I didn't know that. I guess I should go look around the wiki a bit more. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 16:58, 6 July 2005 (BST)

[edit] The System Is Down, Yo

Homestarrunner.com seems to be down intermittently. And before sbemail133 comes out. It did the same thing last night. Blasted bandwidth issues... --Jay (Gobble) 17:51, 11 Jul 2005 (UTC)

What? When did that happen? I never got that problem. --Darklinkskywalker 20:45, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)

On Monday when he wrote it? -- Cyrius 03:51, 15 Jul 2005 (UTC)

It's been over a week since TBC have updated the site as of July 11th to today. --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 17:48, 20 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tell TBC about the wiki?

I got an idea, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to post it. So anyway, on the end credits on a certain episode of BonusStage, the creator mentions the The Bonus Stage Wiki and says that the wiki is creepy. Because he knows about a wiki for his cartoon, do TBC know about theirs? If not, maybe we should tell them about what I just wrote, and maybe they'll list us in the credits of one of the toons. I'm not really saying that it's a good idea, but just curious to see what anyone else thinks. --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 02:41, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I think if they notice us on their own, fine, but we should otherwise leave them alone and let them do what they do best. — It's dot com 02:57, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)
The Chaps are already aware of the wiki. Tom and I have each had brief contact with the Chaps and Craig Zobel through email. Tom also had the opportunity to meet the Chaps at a presentation they gave at NYU, and they discussed the wiki. I don't think it would be appropriate to expect any recognition from them. We're the fans and they are the artists. We're here to give them recognition, not the other way 'round. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:13, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Interesting about the creep wiki comment. I'd say TBC might say the same about this wiki. I hadn't heard of BonusStage, looks pretty cool!

What about the fanstuff? Do they know about that? -- Strong Lad

Yeah, they know about fanstuff. — It's dot com 15:48, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Excellent - Strong Lad

[edit] Hey! My login doesn't work!

I've been trying to log in but my password says it's wrong! How?! Whaaaaaaaaa!?!?!?!?!?!?!
- 209.104.139.221, Amy Whifflepoof, not in because of this crappy crap problem.

Maybe you just mistyped it, or confused it with another password. Just try again. --Jay (Gobble) 17:59, 23 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Also note that there is an "Email new password" button on the Special:Userlogin page that might help you out. -- Tom 18:10, 23 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I had a similar problem, Tom and Jay are probebly rite. 24.62.243.222 18:42, 24 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Updates

TBC havn't made any new updates on the site lately other than Quote of the Week, Fan Stuff and Sketch Book. I'm getting impatient!!

They just skipped a week, that's all. Just wait til tomorrow: Monday, the day they usually update.

[edit] Typo on the Main Page

Hey, just wanted to let the powers that be know that there is a typo on the main page, in the "featured article" section regarding Strong Sad's Lament. It reads "It originated with in the email website", whereas it should read either "It originated in the email website", "It originated with the email website", or "It originated within the email website". Whoever has access to modify this page please correct this. Thanks!

Shawn81 13:33, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Fixed, thanks. Thunderbird 01:55, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Okay, so what's the deal??!!

I don't mean to sound rude, but I don't know WHAT PAGE TO PUT THIS ON!!??!! But, anyway, to answer the question ONCE AND FOR ALL! Who's all of the CHARACTER'S PARENTS??!!! They have millions of references, and stuff, but WHO THE HECK ARE THEY??!!! ARE THEY REAL??!! I just want to know the FRIGGIN' DEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Please? - Brittany - "I'm 12 years old. Am I the youngest here?"

No one has ever seen or heard of any of main character's parents, so we don't know who they are. - Joshua
We've heard "of" Strong Mom in a few cartoons. But nothing concrete. Other than her existence. Maybe. -- Cyrius 08:21, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
It's a cartoon. Cartoons can have flexible realities. The fact that the Strongs live with their mother, yet she's never seen, is okay because it's a cartoon... You know what would be interesting? If Senor Cardgage were the Strong's father.
We've seen two different versions of Pom Pom's parents - differently-colored Poms in Pom Pom, Too and a file cabinet in Strong Bad's hypothetical scenario in Family Resemblence. --Jay (Gobble) 17:37, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Brittany, even if your quote had not said so, I'm sure everyone who reads these boards could tell you were twelve years old. Please do not shout, and try to limit yourself to one exclamation point at a time. Trelawney 06:46, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Trelawney, this question has already been taken care of. If all you have to add are rude comments, please keep them to yourself. Thanks. -- Tom 12:00, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Sorry. I was just trying to help. I wasn't saying it in a rude way. Trelawney 05:42, 1 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It's okay. Just keep in mind that when you leave a comment, people can't see you or know for sure your mood. Irony isn't always obvious, and blunt, raw text can easily appear rude. -- Tom 21:11, 1 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Point taken, I beat my breast. Figuratively. Trelawney 06:38, 2 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Another Archive

I think some more sections on this page should be archived again. Maybe the first 20 or so. This page is already twice as large as the archive, and it always shows the large page warning since it's 76 KB. EDSMILDE

Perhaps we should archive this page similar to the way the fanstuff page is archived. -- Super Sam 12:34, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Alrighty, it's been a week, so I went and created archives in groups of 20. They're easily accessible at the top of the page. -- Super Sam 07:56, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dudes!!!

i ♥ homestarrunner and crap...but...STRONG BAD DOESN'T ANSWER MY EMAILS!!!

Join the club. Better yet, join the wiki and sign your posts. — It's dot com 02:22, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Dont blame him. The site is so popular that he gets thousands every day. Imagine, because after every email the paper comes down with the link to email him. Give him a break.

[edit] marshmallow discrepency

the main page has this blurb from the featured article about Marshmallow's last stand, but the text in the blurb does not match the text in the article. what gives?

The blurb on the main page is just a summary, not the beginning of the article. — It's dot com 12:52, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Exactly. On larger articles, the first paragraph usually suffices. But in some specialty articles, the opening paragraph is neither long enough nor fully explanitory, which then calls for some tweaking specifically for the Main Page summary. Thunderbird 02:17, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] So much freedom?

I love how anyone can edit things whenever we want to on HRWIKI, but dont you think thats a lot of risks? someone stupid and careless can easily take the pages and erase them or say something wrong. Is there a way to stop that?

Posted by Martin F. (I've been putting this signature until I get my username updated lol)

Stopping vandalism and other inappropriate edits is easy. First of all, there's strength in numbers. The vast majority of users are not stupid or careless, and are willing to patrol the wiki to protect it from those who are. The main tool for this is the recent changes page, which allows users to monitor the current edits. Reverting a page that has been vandalized is a simple and straightforward procedure. All in all, the risk isn't that great, and the freedom of the wiki more than makes up for the necessity of having to keep an eye on things. — It's dot com 01:47, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Eggs a running gag?

I seem to have found some evidence of eggs being a running gag. First their is Strong Bad's EGGS, then there is Homestar's mentioning of dot-egg from pom pom, then there is the eggs for sale for $EGG from garage sale. Anyone with me? --Strong Rad 03:18, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I noticed it too. But this is more of an inside joke than a running gag. It's not that funny, but i guess it is to the Chappos. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 09:24, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

OK, I'll continue the search using the query "eggs -easter". I'll report any new items I see on my user page this page. --Strong Rad 02:34, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

PS: Whoever added the Eggs page to the Inside Jokes category, thanks.

That would be Elcool (talk)(contribs) (according to the page history) Thunderbird 21:27, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)
No, Thank you. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 05:12, 22 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New Updates

I think the Strong Sad's Lament update (August 15, 2005) should be edited to contain this:

-- Super Sam 08:13, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

  • Well I don't have that much of a preferance one way or another, but if you do, go back over the dates of the known avatars, and add them to the correct days as well in the Updates Archives. (Just the ones with a specific date on them) Thunderbird 21:11, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Link on user page to user website

For the lack of a better place to post this, I posted it here, well can I post my website on my user page. --Sultn 00:24, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

You can't copy your website onto it, but you can link to it there. - Joshua

Cool. That's what I meant anyway, thanks!--Sultn 00:27, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] cPanel???

As i typed in hrwiki.org today, i got a strange error message :

There is no website configured at this address.

You are seeing this page because there is nothing configured for the site you have requested. If you think you are seeing this page in error, please contact the site administrator or datacenter responsible for this site.

About cPanel:

cPanel is a leading provider of software for the webhosting industry. If you would like to learn more about cPanel please visit our website at http://www.cpanel.net/. Please be advised that cPanel is not a webhosting company itself, and as such is not responsible for content found elsewhere on this site.

I know i typed in the address right, i even typed it in again.. i typed in the entire thing.. http://www.hrwiki.org and i got the exact message. then i googled hrwiki and the first one came up as the right site you know, and i click on that and everything is fine. i'm so confused.. has anyone ever seen this before? is this some sort of spyware on my computer or something? did i actually type in the right address? am i putting this in the right section anyway??? --Collin 03:38, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

What time of day did you get the error? And for how long? I just upgraded to version 1.4.8 about five minutes ago. We were only not up and running for about 2 seconds, and the errors you would have received were PHP errors, not cPanel errors. Are you sure about the domain? What browser are you using? -- Tom 03:45, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)
well it was 9:35 PM (mountain time, i dont know what time it is on the wiki) and it was only for a few seconds.. I looked at my history and under hrwiki.org is the cpanel error, and under www.hrwiki.org i get the real site. i dont know how you can get to an entirely different site from just not typing in www. i tried it just now without the www and here i am, no problems. I'm using IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 so basically ie 6.0 ^_^ --Collin 05:07, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sidebar

Whatever happened to the sidebar??!?!? --Color Printer 11:58, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

If you're refering to the external links, thanks for pointing that out. It seems to somehow be missing. I'll ask JoeyDay, I'm sure he'll be able to fix it. Thunderbird 12:26, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Fixed. Thanks. It had to do with the upgrade I mentioned earlier. -- Tom 20:14, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Ahh, okay. Thanks you. --Color Printer 20:25, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)
What new features come with this new version? The good...X On Fire (SSX)...And the good again.

[edit] Image

Ummm... for some reason I can't save that image on the sidebar (HRWiki logo). Is it protected or something? I had to make a .tif file of it.

No, it's just embedding into the page differently (something like that). If you have Firefox, you can go to Tools > Page Info > Media and in the list somewhere will be the logo. «Rob» 06:15, 28 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Linking to fanstuff and forum

I have a little suggestion. Maybe someone should link the forum and the fanstuff wiki to the main page, because I didn't notice the forum until I took a good look at the welcome message, and I didn't notice the fanstuff wiki until I was browsing around people's user pages. --arrow4.PNG~Rebecca~ RJMT speaker-noise.gif 03:15, 30 Aug 2005 (UTC)

They're both linked on the sidebar (under "external links"). I don't know how they could be any more visible than that. —BazookaJoe 03:17, 30 Aug 2005 (UTC)

i dont know i dont think so

[edit] LOOK AT THIS

I was just reading an interview where it says: (quote on quote)

"Of course, there are times when we think, why can't Strong Sad just say: '****! I hate this bull****!' There are countless outtakes of that kind of stuff. We were thinking of making The Swear Episode, where they just cut loose after all this time."

TBC had said this in an interview, and I am not only shocked, but relieved that they did not submitt a toon like that.

Scary... but I was aware of this. What interview is this exactly? - Joshua

I think this is the website[1]. Homestramy20|Talk 02:19, 9 Sep 2005 (UTC)

  • Oh, come on people. They ARE adults you know. Besides, I always believed that they were kidding around about that, which they're allowed to, as they are GROWN MEN. Geez, grow up and take a joke, people. It's not like they're REALLY going to make a "Swear Episode" ;) --Bottles98 16:06, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

All I have to say it.. calm down! We know there grown men, we weren't saying that it was the end of the world. People are allowed to have comments you know. -Homestramy20|Talk 17:58, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

TBC wouldn't really make a swear episode anyway. They've said themselves that their humor just isn't that profane (in so many words). And if they happened to make one, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I have to admit though, it is refreshing to see online toons that are able to be funny without profanity. -Jazz Daddy
