[edit] Wikitable class not used?

I've noticed that most tables on this wiki don't use the built-in "wikitable" class. Why is this? Changing all of the tables to class="wikitable" saves a lot more time and space than border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2 style="border-collapse:collapse". I know it doesn't matter, but I also prefer the light shade of gray on the cell borders, which the wikitable class uses, than the darker shade of gray that we currently use. --76.224.216.122 19:52, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] What time?

What time are new toons usually added? TheThin 02:41, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Usually it's sometime between 12:00:00 AM and 11:59:59 PM, give or take a week or two. — Defender1031*Talk 02:43, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
If you didn't get it... Basically whenever. But a more 'accurate' answer would be 'Mondays, but they can be late sometimes. In this case they'll post a main page message. And sometimes they just don't post anything and go on unannounced breaks.' 98.176.133.158 20:20, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Harmless Junk, Inc

Anyone know what domains these are? TheThin 03:29, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

homestarrunner.com, videlectrix.com, thoraxcorp.com, and that website. whatthepafargle.com or something i forgot ---Girrbyte
Thorax Corp isn't owned by Harmless Junk... it's owned by TBC, but not under the company. I think there was a whatthepfargtl site at one point, but it was owned by a fan, not TBC. phlip TC 09:23, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
[acording to the homestar runner.com page the domain for whatthepfargtl was owned by them for a short time] --Girrbyte
Actually, there is a harmlessjunk.com. free 00:58, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
The K is stumping me and that's saying something. I find it strange that ronplanet.com is not included in that list. —Zelinda 05:17, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Not conflict'd?

Is there something wrong with the edit conflict function? Strongkinghomsarsmith 02:05, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I was wondering the same thing. The Knights Who Say Ni 02:12, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
What exactly is that link supposed to be highlighting? What was the difference between the expected and observed behavior? — It's dot com 03:01, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Me and Knights removed the same thing, at the same time. Both show up in Recent Changes. Strongkinghomsarsmith 03:16, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
In addition to removing that line, you apparently added a period on a different line, which makes it count as a different edit. The software is designed to merge edits when there's a conflict if they don't interfere with each other. — It's dot com 15:09, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
I had something the other day: i was trying to revert something, but DeFender beat me to it, so my edit didn't show up at all. i think that's what you mean by merging edits. The Knights Who Say Ni 16:58, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Sort of. If you edit part of an article in exactly the same way as someone else before you, the system won't display a conflict. If you make no other changes, your edit will just be ignored, as in your last example. But if you change something elsewhere in the article, it will show up as two edits: first the part that you both changed (credited to the other person), and then whatever else you changed (which is what happened with the addition of the period in the very first example). The primary use of this feature is to allow one person to edit, say, the transcript of an article and another person to edit the remarks. The system (using diff3) can merge the two edits without displaying a conflict as long as they don't interfere with each other. — It's dot com 21:37, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Okay, it makes much more sense now. Thanks. Strongkinghomsarsmith 21:42, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Cookies saved separately

External links and subtitle links link to www.hrwiki.org when I'm browsing hrwiki.org, this means I'm not logged in when I click them; as cookies are saved separately for www.hrwiki.org and hrwiki.org ColdReactive 22:58, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

The workaround is to log in on both www.hrwiki.org and hrwiki.org. — It's dot com 23:12, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Feels like the admins are too lazy to fix it though with that response. Fine, whatever. ColdReactive 23:35, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
They're not lazy. For security reasons, any browser sees www.hrwiki.org and hrwiki.org as two different websites. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 23:49, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
ColdReactive: Thanks for your comments. I will bear them in mind the next time you need assistance. — It's dot com 14:08, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Help with subtitles

When I tried to do the subtitles for that weird H - o - m - e video, the subtitles wouldn't display because the software automatically assumes that the page is on homestarrunner.com, but it's on videlectrix.com. Does anyone (preferably Phlip) know how to fix this? MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 20:05, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

OK, looks like there were different problems with both the GM script and the local viewer with that subtitles script... both have been fixed. The GM script got confused by the nested templates in the header... which was fixed by creating a redirect so that the nested templates weren't necessary. If we ever do need nested templates on a subtitles script for some reason, adding <noinclude></noinclude> tags around it will also fix it. For the local viewer, it's been changed so that you can have an absolute URL in the file attribute (which has to be a full URL), as long as it's on homestarrunner.com, videlectrix.com or the mirror. All three should work, now. phlip TC 04:16, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Broken link

watch (links to sbemail "independent") is broken. Please change it to watch. --Pdedecker 10:28, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

That "fixed" link is also 404'd for me. In fact, the entire H*R Website is not updated with that email for me. ColdReactive 12:48, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
It's broken because there's no ".html" at the end of it. The correct link is here. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 21:10, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Yup. Just like the second link in the original post. This was fixed six and a half days ago, when this thread was current. — It's dot com 23:16, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Security change?

I know that H*R is suppose to be a Wiki that anyone can edit, but it seems like lately especially, we've had numerous incidents where anonies are coming in just to disrupt the wiki just because they think that they are funny. While I don't want to totally block anony edits, and it wouldn't completely eliminate the problem, but would it be worth it to at least block anony page creation? From what I've observed is that while occasionally an anony does create a useful page, that makes up a very small percentage. wbwolf (t | ed) 15:57, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure I agree with you, but I AM VERY ANNOYED WITH ALL THOSE NONSENSE PAGES. We could have, like, a requested article page for the annonies who want to create a page or something. free 16:15, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Meh, they're a minor annoyance. Nothing to get worked up about. — It's dot com 21:00, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Or we could just force everyone to LOGIN. *cough* ColdReactive 00:05, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
There's no reason to go that far. — It's dot com 01:43, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Back on the original topic of just restricting page creation: We're not Wikipedia, but what Wikipedia does can be informative to us. Wikipedia does in fact restrict page creation to logged-in accounts. What caused Wikipedia to make this restriction was not mere vandalism, but actual libel concerns related to biographies of living persons (the specific impetus a controversy in which a biography was created falsely linking a journalist to the John F. Kennedy assassination) and this was not caught for quite some time. We have no matters this serious here at HRWiki: some nonsense pages are being created and then deleted relatively soon thereafter. We don't sometimes miss a few pages that then sit around for a few days (Wikipedia sometimes does just because it's so big). This kind of step really isn't needed; our cleanup methods are fine. Heimstern Läufer 04:26, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Maybe it's just me, but surely it's more work to tidy up after anonymous users going on rampages than it is to simply prevent anonymous users from going on a rampage in the first place. Though I find it really weird that they even care enough to bother going on said rampage in the first place. In the last three hours, you and Jay have had to block twenty-five different IP addresses (most likely all the same user using some kind of spoofing software) and revert extremely offensive vandalism. I mean, you could have spent that time doing something more productive. --Belthazar 08:27, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
It would be sad and counterproductive to block all annonies from editing. Most of them do good work, and I'm sure most users here started as annonies. We should keep the open and inviting nature of this wiki and not panic because every once in a blue moon some idiot is bored. That would be over-reacting and destroying a part of our wiki's culture. Loafing 09:50, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Wow, I can't believe you actually did it. How long will this last? (No new users and no annony editing) I hope we can remove this lock soon...there were many many helpful annonies, and only one(?) very bad one. free 12:05, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, anonies can be helpful! Can they at least register, or is our member count forever frozen? Hagurumon 12:09, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I doubt they'll leave the ban forever, but I'm not sure if the whole disabling user creation thing is necessary. free 12:15, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it sucks being prevented from editing due to other people's actions. I know this firsthand; this one time I saw a bunch of things that needed fixing at Bulbapedia, but I couldn't do anything because vandals caused account creation to be disabled. I felt kinda sad, and I imagine anonies here would feel the same. Hagurumon 12:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Are we gonna post a note or something on this page, like "anonymous editing and user creation have temporarily disabled due to vandalism, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause"? And yes, I know what it's like not being able to edit a wiki that needs fixing. free 12:31, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Man. The first time I checked this wiki today I saw all of this vandalism going on the recent changes page. And, two days after soda explosion in one of my family's cars, it starts to smell like a dumpster! Boy, is it ever Monday! I'm fine with blocking off anonnies from editing temporarily. It won't be a big loss if anonymous users can't edit for a day or two, as long as it deters some of the proxying vandals away. It does seem we have been getting a series of vandals these past weeks. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 19:44, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Also, I do agree that we should put up a notice, but what position would be appropriate (i.e., {{recentchangesnotice}} or MediaWiki:Sitenotice), I'm not sure. Also, this has been happening once in a while with my ISP, but is just me or is the wiki a little slow? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 19:51, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
There's no need for a notice, because anonnies aren't blocked. This morning was just a temporary measure. Yes the server is a little slow. — It's dot com 19:54, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I couldn't even view the wiki for 3 hours, and it's still slow. free 19:58, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Is there sever maintenence going on or something? Three hours was an awfully long downtime. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 23:31, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
The speed seems to be goinging back to normal for me. It's Dot Com, out of curiosity, what's been happening with the server these past four hours? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 23:33, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
The server experienced a technical problem unrelated to the events of yesterday evening. We are working on getting everything back the way it's supposed to be. — It's dot com 23:35, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, I wasn't here for yesterday evening (in UTC?) so I guess I missed something. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 23:38, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
In short, we had two or three waves of vandal attacks; one group possibly from 4chan or Encyclopedia Dramatica, defacing pages with explicit images from several different IPs, likely spoofed (sidebar: don't go looking at them, they are nasty. I do hope IDC can get them pulled or suppressed). Then our more recent vandal who's been doing all the nonsense pages, showed up, and just defaced pages. HL and J did a great job of valiantly defending yon wiki from the foul despoilers. wbwolf (t | ed) 23:58, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
That was probably the most foul vandalism I've seen on the wiki. I saw it before the whole server thing went wrong. I was going to make sure that it was all reverted, but I GAVE UP. (Partly because the server was acting up, but partly because of the filth) Wbwolf's right; don't look for it. free 00:19, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Also, is it safe to edit the wiki as normal? Or should we give things a little time? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 23:40, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Last question, what is the switchout of the main pages fixing?--Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 23:45, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
A miscellaneous glitch. I'll put it back when I can. — It's dot com 23:59, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
This is simple.Just have the security set so that only users on HRwiki can create and/or edit articles.I'm pretty sure that some idiot won't waste his time making an account just to write a nonsense article. But hey,you never know. — Rondleman! Stuff I did.Talk. 15:06, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
We're not going to do that. — It's dot com 21:35, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] API URL?

Do we have the MediaWiki API set up over here? I would like to add Homestar Runner Wiki to WikiSnail, a MediaWiki client, on my iPhone. I would need to know the URL for the API in order to connect to this wiki (I assume they mean the "api" folder). Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 02:46, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I figured it out myself using some of the presets it came with. The url is "http://www.hrwiki.org/w/api.php". For those wanting to get this app, I'd wait, as it doesn't really make editing (which it can barely do) and viewing on an iPhone/iPod touch any better. But it does have potential, however. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 18:09, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Hidden Sbemail!

Well, not really hidden. Just go to Toons/Dictionary, or use this link: http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail204.html. Can this be added to the main page? I'll add it to the Updates (if it hasn't been done). And this was added to the forum. AtarifanaticAtari controller 16:54, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Youtube Links

I noticed that Youtube links have been appearing on various Strong Bad Emails. Do we now know that it is TBC? That'sBupkis! 11:58, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

There's discussion on that here. The consensus there is (so far as I can tell) "likely, but not certain". I do think adding links is a shade preemptive, though... --Belthazar 12:03, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Archiving

The main page archive was reverted by Stux recently. (Okay, maybe a while ago) But anyway, does anyone think it's time to archive this thing? I don't see any running discussions in the first 20 posts, unless I'm mistaken. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 05:59, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't know what discussions are still ongoing, but I do agree we are overdue on archiving. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 20:05, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Character "Appearances"

Lately I've seen some filmographies that list characters' names being mentioned as "appearances." Isn't that taking it too far? I thought the only cartoons to be listed in filmographies are such in which the character shows up, or at least can be heard speaking. That is the actual character. NMRodo 14:16, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Please provide an example. — It's dot com 17:06, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Ah, of course. How about Sticklyman's "appearance" in 8-Bit is Enough? NMRodo 22:58, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
I don't have access to the game right this second. Do you have an example from the website? — It's dot com 23:03, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
How about The Little Chef Guy from King of Town Email? NMRodo 23:10, 7 September 2009 (UTC) (By the way, am I supposed to sign my comments with a dash? >_> If so, I'll start doing that...)
For Sticklyman, what NMRondo means is that his sole appearence in 8-Bit is a single throwaway comment from Strong Bad if you look at the level indicator while playing 20X6. He never actually appears on the screen. --Belthazar 23:12, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
For the chef, I agree that it shouldn't say he appears where he doesn't actually appear, although I do think it should be mentioned somewhere where he is mentioned. — It's dot com 03:01, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, how about some sub-section of filmographies titled "Other Mentions" or something like that? -NMRodo 03:03, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
For a minor character, I think that would be appropriate. This discussion is also appropriate for HRWiki talk:Standards. — It's dot com 04:33, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Problem with the new YouTube links on pages

A spacing problem

Has anyone else noticed the spacing errors? I've noticed it with two XP's, a Vista, and Internet Explorer, all the same. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 21:20, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

That's probably more of an error with the {{preforumsbemailextlinks}} template than the YouTube link. --DorianGray 21:23, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Strong Bad Email Check

In the Strong Bad Email Check, it says on every email that a subject line should be there. To date, this is only true for Lappy emails. For non-lappy emails, it brings up an error message. Is there something that can be done to fix that? The Knights Who Say Ni 21:42, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

at this point it looks like emails 1-118 are fine, but 169 and 202-current still have it. i'm not sure if this has been changed, or if i was wrong to begin with about the first two computers. anyway, is there something that can be done about the last five (which will grow with every new email)? The Knights Who Say Ni 20:45, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Question

If H*R is meant to be an adult cartoon, why doesn't it have violence, drugs, sex, swearing, discrimination, and other themes that are common in adult media? Jc iindyysgvxc 06:16, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Because it's also an all-ages cartoon, just with a leaning towards college-age humour. Also see: Category:Violence, Swears, and Drugs/Smoking. The other two aren't applicable to the humour style. --DorianGray 06:20, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
