[edit] You do not have permission to do that

When I click "View Source" on a protected page, I get the message "You do not have permission to do that, for the following reason" ... I don't find the word "that" particularly appropriate. Is it saying that I don't have permission to view source? That can't be it, since it is showing me the source. So, I think the message should be changed to "You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason" ... unless there are some other contexts in which the words "edit this page" would not make sense. OptimisticFool 18:12, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

True, true...but how many people will think it's necessary? I don't think anything of it, but maybe you're right. SuperfieldCreditUnion
The wording will be improved in version 1.13 (although it's still kind of poorly implemented in my opinion). Wikipedia has taken it out altogether. — It's dot com 22:39, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Maybe some bolding would help? And possibly changing the font to red? Homestar-Winner (talk) 19:03, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Link the international welcome pages on the Main Page (aka "So, are we doing this?")

Two months ago, I posted the following here:

It's been like 10 months since the creation of the international welcome pages, however, the visitor counts are pretty low. With most pages translated, maybe we should start promoting them on the main page. These boxes designed by Sysrq868 look just fine, I would prefer the yellowish single line version.
I just somehow thought I should restart this discussion.

Since nobody answered so far, I'll post it here again, hoping somebody will notice it. TCIC (Talk to me / Stuff I did) 19:50, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

I, also, wonder what happened to this project. Especially with the release of SBCG4AP in Europe, Homestar Runner is getting more international exposure (if that's possible for a internet based cartoon...). The welcome pages, while not perfect, are a fine idea, and most are ready to go right now. So what is the delay in redoing the front page to reflect this great community resource? wbwolf (t | ed) 23:40, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
I added another version with flags, it might still need some work, e.g. making the flags a part to the link to the welcome page instead linking to the image, I couldn't figure out how to do that. As for putting it on the main page, I kinda like this one. TCIC (Talk to me / Stuff I did)
PS: Ok, I figured out a way, but there has to be an easier way to do this.
While I do like the idea of having a language box, I'm not a big fan of actually having the box on the main page, at least in the area that it seems to be placed in most of the views people have designed. It seems to add clutter. Maybe a new button on the sidebar that pulls up a menu or something on the bottom of the page?--Flytape8490 15:41, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Typo on main page

Hey, I noticed a typo in the way the current featured article, StrongBadZone, displays on the main page. Toward the bottom of the excerpt it reads, "The game stylistically resembles the Virtual Boy vector game Red Alarm, which at also features a...". When I go to the article page it reads correctly, "which at some point also...." I assume this has something to do with the way the Featured Article content is inserted into the Main Page—I guess it doesn't come straight from the article? —AbdiViklas 12:27, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

No, it doesn't come straight from the article... it's at HRWiki:Featured article for 2008, week 37. I've gone and added those two missing words to that summary, thanks. phlip TC 12:40, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bad "Watch" link on latest update

The "watch" link for the Strong Badia the Free video goes to the wrong place -- the link listed is http://www.telltalegames.com/strongbad/videos/strongbadiathefreegameplay but it should be http://www.telltalegames.com/videos/strongbadiathefreegameplay TTGJake 16:55, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

To edit the Main Page, you can go to Template:whatsnew and hit "edit" there. An FYI so you don't have to spend more time bringing this up on a talk page than it would actually take to fix a link. OptimisticFool 19:34, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps the fix wasn't obvious or he would have done it himself (note that not even the person who added the update knew the correct format). — It's dot com 20:40, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I didn't know how to edit the main page, and even though I do now (thanks!), it feels a bit icky and conflict of interestey to edit the main page to update a link that points to my company's website. It feels more comfortable to just point out the glitch and let other people decide what to do. But thanks for the heads up. TTGJake 16:03, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The poopsmith's unspeakable action should be on the front page news

Seriously, you guys Cfive 23:10, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Why? The main page updates are for updates only. We don't have to label every single thing that H*R.com did in that week, and post it on the front page. Or else we'd have a lot of: SEPTEMBER 50th, 20X6: Strong Bad updated from 5 foot to 10 foot cubicle in The Office. And, just as a side note, it wouldn't be his "unspeakable" action...rather, it would be his "speakable" action! Get it? (crickets chirp) OK, nevermind. DevonM(talk·cont-ribs) 23:20, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, yeah but.... this is huge! I mean it's THE POOPSMITH and he not only spoke, but SUNG. After about 7 years or something. This isn't some character's insignificant action such as checking e-mail or something, THE POOPSMITH SPEAKETH! And yeah, speakable. Cfive 23:37, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but we don't put spoilers on the main page. — It's dot com 23:49, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DVD Screencaps

Is it possible to take screencaps with PowerDVD or Windows Media Player? BBG 19:10, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, assuming you don't run into a Windows bug that sometimes crops up: use the Print Screen button, open an art program of some sort, and select "Paste". I think Power DVD can also save screenshots directly, but don't quote me on that. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:14, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
With Windows XP, trying to capture with any single DVD player software never worked for me. I discovered, however, that if I first open the DVD with one piece of software and just left it paused, I could then open it with another piece of software and take screenshots to my heart's content. With Windows Vista, I haven't had to use that trick. OptimisticFool 18:02, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, PowerDVD lets you take screenshots directly, and other players might do that as well. The Print Screen button does normally not work, as DVDs are played using hardware acceleration, bypassing a lot of Windows hooks. OF's trick of using two players suggests that Windows XP might only provide hardware acceleration for one video window. If you know what you are doing, then you could disable hardware acceleration for video playback in your graphics card's driver's settings. This might result in enabling the Print Screen button to actually capture video frames. Loafing 22:54, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

When I tried to take screencaps of A Charlie Brown Christmas to use on the article Peanuts, I disabled the PowerDVD hardware acceleration, but when I tried to copy and paste a picture into MS Paint, it copied and pasted a video into MS Paint. Is there any way to fix this or should someone else take the picture? BBG 22:43, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mirror, Mirror, on the Wiki...

Did anyone ever consider making mirrors of all the toons and games and such in case something happens to the website? JCM 23:51, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure a number of people already keep SWF files backed up on their computers just in case of any such emergency. --DorianGray 23:53, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Yep. I worked my butt off, but I have the entire site archived on my laptop. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 20:07, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] View, Watch, view, watch

I notice on a lot of different pages that the words "view" and "watch" are not consistently lowercase or capitalized (here I'm referring to "External Links" of toons and sbemails). {{newsbemail}} suggests that they ought to be lowercase, but I wonder if there is some "rule" I'm not aware of. [edit] Awesome Subpage

Does anyone mind restoring Awesome as a User Subpage for me? I want to see if I can perfect it later. SBCG4AP seems to be creating some gramatically incorrect uses of the word. BBG 19:20, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Delete a picture

Can a regular user delete a picture or page? Or is that only for the sysops?

Deletion can only be done by sysops, be it a picture or an article. You can alert someone to delete something by adding the {{delete}} tag to the page. --DorianGray 21:01, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Today's update...?

What's with the "limozeen show" listed in the updates? Maybe there's something wrong with my browser, but I can't see this message anywhere on the main page.

Strangely, I just noticed that the image code for this post is "tARaNCHUlA"...

EDIT: Never mind. I emptied my cache, and it appeared.

[edit] Rrll rrll soon?

Could someone please update the message on the Forum? It's been down for at least three weeks, and it's obviously not coming back "soon". I don't mean to whine, but I thought I'd shed some light on it so that others don't have false hopes. (This is PlaysetsandToysBuyer, by the way; I don't have a Wiki account.)

You need a looser definition of "soon". You also need to keep in mind that just because it hasn't come back in three weeks, that doesn't mean it won't come back soon. It could come back in three minutes for all you know. Just be patient. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:49, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. It's not like I've forgotten about it. Sometimes things just have to wait till their window, and this is one of them. As Jay said, the message is accurate, since "soon" is relative, and you never know when a window will present itself. — It's dot com 01:59, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Just like the fanstuff wiki will come back "soon", right, Dot com? (Note: this is not a post whining about the length of the fanstuff wiki purge and should not be treated as such. Thank you.) --Color Printer 02:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes and no. In the fanstuff's case, the transfer hit a (non-life-threatening but still quite important) snag and I simply haven't had time to sit down and figure out the best way to fix it. (Again, to repeat, everything is fine—except for that one thing. Nothing is ruined. Probably not ruined.) — It's dot com 05:26, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Were there any reasons for closing the forum other than to prevent trolling and arguments? BBG 16:09, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes. — It's dot com 18:27, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the update. I didn't realise that there was no specific time to fix the forum, though I still say that the message should be changed because the word "soon" is so vague and misleading. I'm going to class "soon" (in an hour), and the prophecies of Revalation will occur "soon" (sometime within human's existence on Earth). --199.8.170.51 18:03, 16 October 2008 (UTC) (PlaysetsandToysBuyer with no account)

You're probably right, but "eventually" has such a less hopeful ring to it. — It's dot com 18:29, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Can I hear the other reasons? BBG 20:04, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Only if you clear your mind, close your eyes, and listen REALLY hard. — Defender1031*Talk 20:24, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Why can't someone tell me them? The only other one I can think of is that you wanted to prevent whining about how it's taking TBC so long to make a new Homestar cartoon. Am I right? BBG 05:05, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Because there's nothing to tell: It's not relevant to the wiki, it doesn't concern you, and the instant the forum reopens it will be obsolete anyway. Keep your pants on, and quit worrying about it already. — It's dot com 05:24, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
This strikes me as rather poor management here. This sort of evasion and avoiding questions as well as your flippant response strike me as a good way to drive off potential and current users. What's wrong with giving a concise explanation of what happened? You don't have to mention any names or specific incidents. Maybe it'll help people understand why it's taking so long and at least understand where the forum has gone. Just my two cents. Do with it what you will.— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 07:31, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
I haven't posted on the WIKI itself in a long while, but I've been an active member of the HRWIKI forum since 2004. I personally have remained silent through much of the "drama" that I've seen going down around the forum, but I'm starting to get irritated myself. I know that the forum went down in order to apparently drive a bunch of people out of there because somebody didn't want them getting so off-topic. Which I didn't agree with but it didn't bother me because all "I" wanted out of it was H*R conversation. However, I am somewhat upset to find the forum down again, especially at this time where it's fun to discuss the Halloween toon. I don't appreciate how it seems like a lot of the WIKI users don't care about the forum. They do not set it as a priority when it is very much so. I don't care if many of the wiki users themselves don't post on it, I post on it and it's the only home for H*R conversation I've had for the past 3-4 years. I came on here tonight looking for some answers and I also don't really like the way you guys act like it's none of our business to know what the problem is. Sounds pretty shady to me. Just cough up an explanation and that would be good enough. I agree that dodging the question and blowing us off isn't really a great way to manage this or deal with it. In short. Please just get the forum back up and quit messing with it so much, so we can all just have our discussions about the toons and games again.--Image:Stinkwing.gif »Bleed0range« 10:03, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
To all forumers: Continuing to whine here isn't going to help. For the sake of argument, let's just say that the wiki and the forum were run by completely different parties. Would you be coming here to whine about the forum being down and insist that it be brought back up? No. You'd just say "Oh, crap.. the site's still down.. guess I'll just have to wait. Maybe I'll send a whiny e-mail; that'll be great!" The fact that there's an overlap in management or whatever shouldn't change anything. The wiki and the forum should be kept separate. Send a whiny e-mail (I repeat: e-mail) and get over it. And don't tell me there's nowhere else to chat about Homestar Runner. Try chat.hrwiki.org .. lovely IRC chat. Enjoy. OptimisticFool 15:44, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah you're right. That IRC chatroom is NEVER dead but full of people who spend a lot of time not talking about Homestar Runner. Believe it or not, there aren't many big forums for H*R discussion. Go check yourself. There's that Horizons one and this one. And besides, "I'm" not the one who pulled off that incredibly lame "let's lock the forum down and tick off all the users so they can't discuss off topic things anymore" deal. I call it like I see it. And I have no idea how to e-mail whoever is in charge because I can't access the forum and I don't specifically know. Therefore, I brought the matter here because it was already being discussed. I'd like to also point out, that you say they should be seperate... but there is a link to the forum for every toon. It is a part of the wiki whether you use it/like it or not.--Image:Stinkwing.gif »Bleed0range« 00:19, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
No one should be suggesting that they be separate. They're not. I'm in charge of the forum. You can email me, but there's no point in doing so. The reason discussion here is pointless is that there's nothing to discuss, and so we're just taking up space on this talk page. The forum is currently down, and I'm aware of it. The reason is immaterial. I don't want it to be down, but it is. My great hope is that it will be back up rrll rrll soon. Unfortunately, it's taking longer than I hoped. — It's dot com 04:35, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
...except they [i]are[/i] run by the same management. What would happen if they weren't run by the same management really doesn't matter. What's so horrid about people using a small section of a talk page to discuss one of the wiki's sister sites? --71.233.64.218 15:53, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Look, we're not doing this again. Look, we're not doing this again. WE'RE REALLY NOT DOING THIS AGAIN! (Seriously, just stop please. We don't need another flamewar here.) — Defender1031*Talk 15:56, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Sending an email didn't help because It's Dot Com never replied. BBG 17:47, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
That's because I've already said what I needed to say. The forum, as of this minute, is down, but it won't be like that forever. — It's dot com 18:26, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Going back to the original goal of changing the message on the forum, maybe you could replace "seriously" with "keep your pants on" to let people know how big a waste of effort it is to get an explanation out of you. BBG 13:46, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

You do realise that the more you try to bring about an explanation, the more ticked off and less likely to work on the forum he becomes? (Account-less PlaysetsandToysBuyer)--199.8.170.219 15:09, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
No, I didn't realize that. I'll shut up now. Would "keep your pants on" shut other people up as well? BBG 16:13, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Who knows. But it really has nothing to do with my being ticked off. I really am trying to get it back open as soon as possible (I had even hoped it would be back up for the recent update). — It's dot com 16:17, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

That's a really cool animation, but I don't think we're going to send anything from the wiki as a whole this year. His birthday is on Saturday, and so there's not really time to get it organized and sent. Even if we'd started when you posted last Friday, a week still isn't enough time.
