[edit] RSS

How closely to new toons, etc is the feedburner page updated? OpenSourceGreg 10:57, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Most likely around the same time the toon is uploaded. --Essence of Ghost Water 12:41, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

I believe I have a bug report about the Recent Changes RSS feed. See I had subscribed to the feed in my feed reader and because of the warnings, I'm constantly seeing the same entries pop-up over and over again in my reader.

I like read all 40 currently present and then some time later the 40 come back with only one or a few new and the rest I already read. --Ngamer01 17:55, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Xeriouxly Forxe Pic

On the What's New area, Xeriouxly Forxe toon's pic is the copyright picture. Is that intentional? 22:15, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

I knew i'd heard this somewhere before. it took me a minute to find it, but here it is. The Knights Who Say Ni 22:28, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Now that April Fools' is over, I made a Xeriouxly Forxe icon and switched it to that. — It's dot com 23:56, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
But will the Xeriouxly icon even be used in the future? We don't even know if TBC will make the XF it's own spin-off. nova scotia 23:58, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Then I won't charge you anything for making the icon. You can have it for free and hold it in reserve in case they ever do. — It's dot com 00:01, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] First Time Here

Has the First Time Here bot's text ever been changed since its creation? Because it is in desperate need of updates. Also, the following line needs to be reworded:

"If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum, or if you're feeling creative, you can register separately at the fanstuff wiki." But now the Knowledge Base and the Fanstuff have the same user database, so you shouldn't really register separately. And on a side note, why was the Fanstuff Wiki reopened when it was said here that it would never be reopened? And why do they now share the same user databases? RickTommy (edits) 13:42, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

You might want to check the timestamps in the reply you linked to. That's a good catch though on the First Time Here bot. I'll fix it. — It's dot com 14:13, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Proper Placement of Quotation Marks

I just noticed this, and was wondering if there was a discussion on proper quotation placement. In the united states, it's punctuation then quotation mark, but elsewhere--mainly--it's quotation mark then punctuation. Or so I have learned. ColdReactive 21:31, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

See HRWiki:Manual_of_Style#Quotation_marks. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:56, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Actually, it's ALWAYS punctuation before quotation marks. OpenSourceGreg 08:44, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
No, it's not. In the US, traditionally grammarians have said always to put the full stop or comma before the close quote; in the UK, it's standard to follow the sense of whether the full stop or comma belongs with the quoted material. Examples: 1. She said "I want to go to some pizza place." 2. She said she wanted to go to "some pizza place". The Wiki generally follows US standards for spelling and punctuation, but here we've made an exception and tend to use the latter system. It's not clear to me exactly why we do so, but I'm still for it because honestly, the US system doesn't make any sense at all and I refuse to follow it, anyway. Heimstern Läufer 08:55, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
Hear, hear. --DorianGray 08:57, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
That's about how i've gone about editing the wiki ever since this edit was changed. for some reason i still remember that. I wasn't sure which one it was, and apparently i guessed wrong. by now i have a better feel for how it's done here, and i just know when to use ." this and when to use ". that. i think i made that particular edit based on OSG's rule. and i am an American, yet i have to agree w/what heimstern said about the rule not making any sense. and the previous sentence from yet onward may be disregarded when concerning question marks (which is the rule that threw me off on that edit haha). <--which brings us to a similar question: what about periods before or after parentheses and parenthetical phrases? The Knights Who Say Ni 09:31, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
parentheses, square brackets, curly brackets, etc. [should] follow the exact same rules as quotation marks. ColdReactive 10:36, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
Periods almost never go inside a closing parenthesis (and I can't think of any time that a comma does). (Only if the entire sentence is in parentheses does the period go inside.) As for quotation marks, I strongly prefer the U.S. style in printed materials, like magazines and books, but for the wiki I prefer our custom style because of the default font we use. — It's dot com 17:29, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
And what about parenthetical phrases (like, whether or not a question mark should go before or after the green)? this isn't a good example, but at least it shows what i'm talking about. The Knights Who Say Ni 03:33, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
You should be able to remove a parenthetical phrase from a sentence and still have it make grammatical sense. If you put the question mark inside the green, and then removed the green, the sentence would be missing its terminal punctuation. But you can still sneak questions in with declarative statements, like this (see?). — It's dot com 04:03, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
i already know what happens inside the green. i'm asking about before the ( vs. after the ). The Knights Who Say Ni 18:20, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
After. A parenthetical phrase either has to be a part of a sentence (in which case the punctuation of the outer sentence comes after the closing parenthesis), or it should be a sentence that can stand by itself. (In the latter case, the punctuation goes inside the parentheses because the whole sentence can be removed.) — It's dot com 19:12, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
[[1]] a funny example of this issue. The user asked if he could be renamed "President Cold One", but because he put the question mark inside the quotation marks, Tom thought he meant "President Cold One?".
Heimstern: If you refuse to follow putting puncuation marks inside quotes, why did you do so in this edit?

[edit] Admin

It's been just over five years since we last had an admin nom. Can we have another one soon? RickTommy (edits) 13:27, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] There is no spoon

How many views did the main page get after The Brothers Chaps asked people to donate to the HRWiki? --71.77.206.64 22:41, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Hard to say. I started keeping track of it for a while, but then I realized that the numbers are skewed by Web crawlers, and I don't know to what degree. The numbers at the bottoms of pages are so unreliable that some sites, like Wikipedia, don't even display them. — It's dot com 04:28, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

[edit] ToonInfo template

DorianGray suggested sorting the Filmographies by date rather than alphabetically. I took this idea and ran with it, creating a ToonInfo template... but hit a small stumbling block when I discovered that sorting Filmographies by date would have the side effect of every toon being listed under "2" where it's currently listed by letter. It's still possible (and not terribly hard) to sort by date, it would just unfortunately look odd on the Category pages. Nevertheless, the template works otherwise (the sort-by-date feature is not currently included.) It would help keep our format consistent and let us change the format more easily, but admittedly has the problem of having to physically add it to each and every toon on the site. Thoughts? --Jay (Talk) 10:55, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I fear it would be too complicated to get one of the robits to automate the process... But hey, if we don't get any updates soon, at least we'll have something to occupy us for a while. =3 --DorianGray 11:08, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
No. I think everything's fine the way it is. RickTommy (edits) 11:54, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Eh, if we can make it work, I'd far prefer chronological filmographies to alphabetical ones. Heimstern Läufer 12:11, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Please no. Only if it can be done without adding a log into the page history should it be done. RickTommy (edits) 12:15, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
How many characters can be placed into the template? --209.148.176.136 12:13, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
First of all, I've always thought the filmographies would be better if they were in chronological order, and I think this template is cool and ambitious, but I think it's a little too complicated for the problem it's supposed to solve. Perhaps we could figure out a way to get the chronological functionality without having to edit every toon article. Or if we really do want to add something to all the articles, perhaps an extension would be better instead of a straight template in order to keep things as simple as possible. — It's dot com 17:10, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
I've seen other Wikis with templates on nearly every page that are far more complicated than that one, for what it's worth. Most notably Bulbapedia, who thrives on complicated templates. --Jay (Talk) 17:50, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
All right, but if we can find a simpler solution, shouldn't we? My original attempt at a STUFF template would have worked, but it was way more complicated than it needed to be, which also meant it wasn't as flexible as it should be. — It's dot com 18:05, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Do you (or does anyone else) have such a simpler solution? (I know that if you don't, that doesn't necessarily mean that my solution wins; I understand logic better than that. This is why I haven't put it on any pages yet and asked here first.) --Jay (Talk) 18:20, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh, yes, and problems with that STUFF template include the fact that STUFF pages were for discussion, so the entries can be very long and get changed often, and the variables don't have names so it's not intuitive what goes where. --Jay (Talk) 18:24, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Okay... my point was that it was overly complicated, even though it could have been made to work. Its specific problems were fixed and aren't all that relevant here. As I hinted at above, a simpler solution would be to change the nature of the filmographies pages so that they're automatically in chronological order (maybe even sortable). Then we wouldn't have to edit any pages at all. — It's dot com 19:16, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
That would be an elegant solution, but how would the filmography pages know the dates the toons came out? (Unless they were made into PAGES and not categories, which would admittedly solve the problem but would still require every page to be modified.) --Jay (Talk) 22:21, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
We would use All Toons or something similar to create a custom sort list. — It's dot com 23:00, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, in that case, it's beyond my understanding of Wikicode and probably beyond my access rights, so I defer to you. --Jay (Talk) 00:50, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

So is this functionality something we really want? I'm just making sure, because whichever avenue we'd end up using—template, extension, whatever—it will take significant effort to implement. — It's dot com 03:50, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Personal image limit going unpoliced in forgotten users?

It started with just me being paranoid, but it turns out there are several users with more than two large images. If a user quits the wiki without responding to a talk page comment, or a user is never alerted (I found that several users were never told after checking their talk pages), what do we do about it? For one thing, it violates our regulations to have that many personals, but on the other hand we can't edit other people's user pages. Seeing how this situation is going on, how would we resolve it? Are we lax in cases like this and shrug it off, or is it just that nobody is as nit-picky about these things as I am and never checks? Yeah, I suppose this is a mild problem, but there are some big-name editors like this, some of which regularly contribute. Does it really matter? I can't make the call, so can I get professional opinion in here from someone who knows the rules better than me? --Jellote wuz here 00:15, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

The limits are in place to prevent people from abusing the privilege of a user page. If they're not active anymore, then it's probably not worth the effort to worry about it. If someone is still here, though, then I think it's only fair that they be in compliance with our policy. — It's dot com 16:48, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Sbemail in navigation?

I don't think that Strong Bad Email should be in the navigation section on the side. All the other links have something to do with the wiki itself, but SB email is just a feature on homestarrunner.com. It should be removed. Rondleman! Stuff I did.Talk. 00:12, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Strong Bad Email is a large and important part of the site. Probably about 55% of the pages on this wiki are related to Strong Bad Email. In fact, the site wouldn't be as popular if Strong Bad Email didn't exist. I think that's plenty of proof for it to stay. doctorwho295 27 June 2010
Related how? About one-thirteenth of the wiki's articles are the SBEmail ones, as well as a couple of articles that have SBEmails organised in lists like location, sender's name etc. That's waaaaay less than 55%, but still quite a lot. As for the site not being popular if SBEmail didn't exist, it's been over nine months since the last SBEmail, so... RickTommy (edits) 03:23, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Reporting New Stuff On Website... On HRwiki...

Just wondering, since Homestarrunner.com posts "news updates" for when they have updates, would this affect HRWiki? TBC already owns the rights to the news updates, so... ColdReactive 17:23, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

I'm not catching how that would directly affect us... — It's dot com 18:22, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit] iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app?

Would anybody on the wiki be able to create an iOS app for the wiki? I'm sure it would be very possible. --68.78.135.218 20:40, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

I'm just wondering, since I don't have an iProduct, what's the difference between an iOS of HRWiki, and browsing the site online with the device? Could be a nice way to deliver updates (like Twitter)? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 04:36, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
While the wiki was unusable on my old Nokia E71, it looks and works just fine on my iPhone 3GS. I don't know what an HRWiki app would look like, but I doubt it would add value. Also, there is no free way of developing an iPhone app if you don't want to jailbreak. Loafing 07:00, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I do have the SDK, so I can see what I can do. --68.78.134.21 21:10, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to bring back the dead, but it seems a bit pointless to make an app specialized for the wiki, as I'm certain the wiki works fine on the things in the browser itself (which is amazing, Apple usually is more greedy than that.) MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 17:46, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
On the contrary, I think an HRWiki app would make browsing and editing the wiki much easier while on-the-go, as well as make it more enjoyable. If the HAIF App was found to be beneficial, I'm sure an HRWiki app would find its niche, too. It's just matter of finding someone dedicated enough to program it. [edit] Special Talk

Why don't special pages have talk pages? e.g. There's no Special Talk:Upload. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc

Talk pages are for discussing the improvement of the articles. Special pages are not articles to inform readers; Special pages serve a different purpose, and don't need to be editted or discssed about. StrongAwesome 17:58, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
oh. got it. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc
that isn't always true. one time i needed to ask a question on Special:Sbemailcheck's talk page, but since it didn't exist, i had to come here to ask the question. it was ignored and archived without being answered. It's right here: HRWiki:Main Page Talk Archive 34#Strong Bad Email Check and I still feel like the question needs to be answered. The Knights Who Say Ni 19:13, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Custom special pages that need discussion often have project or help pages associated with them. For example, Special:Ledger's talk page is at HRWiki talk:Ledger. Special:Sbemailcheck links to an instruction page, Help:Sbemailcheck, and a corresponding talk page, Help talk:Sbemailcheck (which is where your question should be). — It's dot com 20:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
And if you cannot find a spot to post your "talk" then you should add it to this page, which is where "general" project discussion goes. ColdReactive 18:11, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
HRWiki talk:Projects is not the first place I'd go if I had the kind of problem Knights described above. (As a talk page for a project page where most discussion occurs on the project page itself, it doesn't even have much of a function at all.) HRWiki talk:FAQ is probably better suited for technical questions (if there's not a more specific page available). — It's dot com 18:33, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Protection

Peasant's Quest, Thy Dungeonman 3, and their commands and walkthrough pages are prone to vandalism from anonymous IPs. Could they please be semi-protected? RickTommy (edits) 03:35, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

That looks like low key vandalism. Protecting those pages would be an overreaction and would do more harm than good. Loafing 06:08, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm not quite sure where also to mention this, but Steam is currently have a massive sale on the SBCGFAP games.

[2]

It's 10 USD for the disc at Best Buy by the way, and it's NOT a sale price. Steam just wants to beat best buy, seeing as their normal price on steam for the season is 30 USD. Who'd pay for a digital download when you could just ghost the disk as an imahge on your hard drive for free and payonly 10 USD. Yes, now would be the time to buy it on Steam, but I don't care for steam. Opinions aside, Forum is that way <--------- ColdReactive 21:57, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] A proposal page

I have a proposal, we should have a proposal page like the one on Wikipedia (Has some that can apply to HRWiki too). There can be proposals as well as other thing about the HRWiki or Homestarrunner.com in general. Perducci 01:28, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Different Languages

I think we should have different languages on the HRWiki now, like Wikipedia. I know Homestarrunner.com is in English, “so people who watch probably know English”. But there are people who use the multilingual subtitles, who know English but not well or knows someone who speaks English, ECT. Perducci 01:28, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

The problem with that is that we would have to have a native speaker of the language go over EVERY page and translate it. That would be an absolutely massive project. --DENNIS T/C 01:32, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
True, but what better time than now? It being a hiatus and all. And we could use online translator* to start a page and the many fluent users (I have seen a few) could just tweak and edit.
*(I know, not the best, but it's a start and makes it easier for those fluent in that language. That’s how wikis work, people start, others add. And I recall translating a couple wiki pages, and it was a pretty good translation. And I think it works well because of the correct spelling, grammar and structure of sentences and so on, on the wikis.) Perducci 01:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
Online translators are not "pretty good". They're enough to get the gist when you put in correct English, but when you factor in unusual names of characters and complex concepts and non-words that would be difficult for anyone to translate, it would just be awful. Give it a try with a few pages from Category:Word running gags. OptimisticFool 16:09, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
Instead of to use " simply; might" or " could" , the characters of the universe of the runner of Homestar, particularly running same of Homestar, tend to say sometimes could could instead of another one. Such uses of " non-standard" modals double is common in the vernacular one of the southern United States, including Georgia, where the cracks live on the brothers.
That was Might Could translated to and from Spanish. We are so not making other Homestar Wikis. PowerFile:Homestar Kamikaze Green Favicon.pngPie 21:36, 5 September 2010 (UTC) (Unless we know like a gazillion people who are running same of Homestar fluent in other common languages.)
While online translators are far from perfect, I think that if we find someone fluent in spanish and passionate enough to take on such a project, it could be done. But that's a big if. DENNIS T/C 22:13, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
There's this one guy I know online who's mother tongue is Spanish, but I already asked him for a large-scale translation once, so I think I'd be kinda rude to ask him to do more. PowerFile:Homestar Kamikaze Green Favicon.pngPie 22:51, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
We have a few editors on the wiki that are fluent in spanish. Maybe if we put up a notice about the want for spanish translations, we would get a response. DENNIS T/C 23:10, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. PowerFile:Homestar Kamikaze Green Favicon.pngPie 00:47, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
The reason Wikipedia works in other languages is because they have the demand, infrastructure, and userbase to justify it. Unless and until a very large group of people step forward and say, "Gosh, I would totally contribute to a Homestar Runner Wiki if only there were one were available in my native language; I can't contribute to this one because I don't speak any English except for the preceding sentence and this one explaining it," I can't imagine allocating resources for such a project. — It's dot com 04:33, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Dot com on this one. The people who use this wiki are pretty much all English speakers, so not only would translating all this crap be a colossal waste of time, no one would even use it. And what's the point of having the articles translated in BabelFish or Google Translator if they can just copy/paste it themselves? I vote no on this one. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 17:15, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
