[edit] Message

Earlier this year, it was suggested that there be a site notice that asks people to give their opinion on deletion discussions. Should we put up such a message? Not only will this help clean out the Articles for Discussion category, which some pages have been in for over a year, but it may also boost the wiki's edit count, which is quite low these days (that was also pointed out in that discussion). And on a partially related note, is the fundraising drive still going? 'Cause autumn (spring where I live) is over. RickTommy (edits) 13:13, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Yes. We may or may not change the name, but the fundraising drive will be going on for the foreseeable future. — It's dot com 04:13, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
I don't really see boosting the edit count as that important, but seeing as a lot of those articles have been in the category for a while, we should do something to garner attention. Not sure what, though. PowerFile:Homestar Kamikaze Green Favicon.pngPie 20:01, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] well the brothers Chaps have returned

good to know they have returned ey?

I think we are all happy about that! :) Homestar-Winner (talk) 17:26, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm skeptical, this could be like the Xeriously Forxe stunt, they might not have another peep for a year.

[edit] Wiki image

I noticed the Homestar image in the top left corner (of every page) is just a gif, and a high quality one at that. It's over a megabyte. That's a GB of bandwidth for every thousand people who have to download that gif when they visit the site. I dunno, considering you guys are always asking for donations to help pay for the server, it seems like you could be cutting down a bit by replacing that gif with a light-weight SWF or something. --184.56.45.155 03:36, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Normally it's a small image. We only use the larger one for a week or two at Decemberween time. We monitored our bandwidth last year and, while it did increase noticeably, it was only a fraction of our overall usage. Besides, we have unlimited bandwidth in our current setup, and it was over a year since our previous fundraiser. Not that a SWF is a bad idea, if only because it would give us more flexibility. — It's dot com 05:16, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Stuttering? Stammering?

Does anyone else think that we should have a page on characters stuttering/stammering? NighttimeDriver50000 04:33, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

No. Yes. Maybe. It's hard to answer yes/no questions like this one. If you can come up with enough material, be bold and create the article. If you are worried about going to a lot of effort for nothing, then at least try and make a case when asking the question. I personally can't think of a lot of stuttering or stammering off the top of my head, though. OptimisticFool 07:08, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
I believe the rule is 3 instances for an article to stay. If you can find three clear-cut, without a doubt, singled out, the only way I know, instances, then just go for it.--The Swedish Ace 16:02, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Our inclusion guidelines state that for generic things, we need "at least five to ten appearances" that are "of at least moderate importance to the toon" in most of the instances. — It's dot com 17:31, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
I don't really think there is a lot of material on stuttering specifically, but on speech difficulties in general. There's really only one character who stutters (Homestar) while there are several characters who can't speak properly (Homsar, Senor Cardgage, among others). doctorwho295 4 January 2011
SB tends to stammer when he gets super frustrated with an emailer or flustered... — Defender1031*Talk 00:42, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Really there just needs to be a generic article on the use of realistically poor or exaggeratedly poor diction in Homestar Runner, as it is a distinct part of the series' appeal, and somewhat unique in the general body of recorded media. (compare the works of Loren Bouchard) — 75.73.70.113 (Talk | contribs) 00:42, 9 April 2011 (UTC) (left unsigned)
Anonny, do you mean like Deliberately Poor English? We already have that. They were talking about creating a more specific page than that. The Knights Who Say Ni 01:25, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion templates

It seems that there have been a few cases where one discussion bleeds onto another page, and certainly there are quite a few cases where conversations have transferred pages. Should we make templates for these occasions, like {{discussion-continued}}, {{discussion-moved}}, and {{discussion-transferred}}? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 20:37, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

After a recent edit, I feel like mentioning this again. Should we? In the words of DeFender1031, would it spoil the wiki? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 21:14, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
My opinion now is the same as a month ago: meh. They might be useful, but the formatting is so simple and the wording so straightforward that it's hardly worth making templates. If, like that {{see}} template, they went in articles, I might be more in favor, but given the complexity of discussions there's something to be said for the flexibility of ad-hoc notices. — It's dot com 23:09, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] SBCG4AP Trogday 2011 sale

It should be noted that a blurb for Telltale's Trogday sale (50% off SBCG4AP) has been included on the Main Pages for January 13th. kyojikasshu 05:26, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] H*R Content

So are we back to one cartoon every 8 months now, or what's the deal? The Brothers Chaps have never really given a formal statement as to what's going on with the site there, here, or anywhere else. We all know the theories - the littlest of tiniest babies are a handful, they're working for Hollywood now, there's a series coming on Cartoon Network - but not once have they ever said "Here's what's going on with the website and why new content is not a priority any more." It's not even so much the lack of new content that's frustrating, it's the total lack of information that's frustrating. Even a conversation with Senor Cardgage would make more sense - at least he'd say SOMETHING. 68.225.171.64 18:00, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

We (still) don't know the answer to your question. If we did, we'd have said something already. Please direct all frustration and speculation to the forum — It's dot com 19:01, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't really do the forum thing (I prefer to not give out my non-dj-mankiewicz e-mail that much) but thanks for the response. It's more of a response than the Chaps have given us. 68.225.171.64 20:56, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Btw, email addresses at the forum are only used for registration and are not made public. In fact, unless there's some kind of problem with a user, most of the time even the admins never see them. — It's dot com 22:32, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
There's a series by the Brothers Chaps coming to Cartoon Network? I thought they turned down multiple offers to make a TV series. 24.179.158.29 14:34, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
I'm unsure as to whether TBC are working on anything for Cartoon Network, but if they are, it will almost certainly not be Homestar related. SuperfieldCreditUnion 23:45, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Visible noses

Shouldn't there be a characters with visible noses page? or a lack of visible noses page or something like that? I already have a list of characters with visible noses just so you know. (1-up, Marshie, Gel-arshie, Mr. Shmallow, Pan Pan, Trivia Time, Strong Mad and some more) The page will be like Lack of visible body parts.

I don't think it comes up enough to warrant a separate section on Lack of Visible Body Parts, let alone a separate page. We'd only mention it if it was specifically referred to the character having/not having a nose, which could easily fit under the "Other" section for anyone who isn't Strong Bad or Coach Z. --DorianGray 23:29, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

okay thanks! Do you think this is good?
Email winter pool — Pom Pom is seen wearing sunscreen on the spot where his nose would be.
Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 15.2 — Calls from The King of Town and a questionable surgeon reveal Marzipan had a large nose prior to a questionable surgery. The Cheat also tells Marzipan to blow up her nose.

The Homestar Runner Gets Something Stuck In His CrawNarrator strong bad calls Tiny Handed Strong bad "Strong bad with sort of a nose". --206.116.143.157 18:26, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

You should just add those lines to the article and find out. If no one removes them, then they're good. If they do get removed, then it can be discussed on the article's talk page (which is a better place to talk about specifics than here). — It's dot com 19:42, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Those lines already ARE on the article. The anonny seems to still be pushing for a separate article. — Defender1031*Talk 20:51, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
I know they're already on the article, but is it okay if I'm remove them from where they're at and put it in the new section? --206.116.143.157 22:15, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Strong Bad's Nose Is already its own section, and there are only 2 mentions of noses other than that, one referring to pom pom, the other to marzipan. Not worth separating out. — Defender1031*Talk 22:36, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Links expecting archive 40

I know we were way behind on archiving this page, but some links (maybe just mine?) expect some of these topics to be in HRWiki:Main Page Talk Archive 40. Could we move everything else there sometime so the links don't break? This is a rather large concern for my OCD. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 03:18, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

So, is the logo all there is? No reskin, no letter changing, no ads, nothing? The forum hasn't even been touched as far as I see. This is either the worst or best April Fools prank ever. JCM 01:45, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Well, yes. I admit it's kind of low-key, but so is H*R these days. Also, the timing of April 1 was bad this year (today is Opening Day for Major League Baseball, and I'm actually out of town at some games; I decided against doing an all-out prank because I knew I wouldn't be around to monitor it). We had the idea to animate Homestar years ago and only now had the Flash logo to make it work. Sorry it didn't have enough punch for you. We'll see if we can pack more wallop next year. — It's dot com 02:32, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
I think it's really well done :-) Good jorb! We should keep the logo, maybe without audio. Loafing 04:05, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit] User pages of banned accounts/useless templates twofer discussion

I would like to point out that many people who have been permanently banned still retain their userpages. Examples include Bubs and Pom Pom Fan (alternate account for Marzifan) H*Bad (for use of sockpuppets) and Ugozima (threatening to DoS the wiki). I have previously tried bringing this up, but I was a lot more forceful, immature and... well, that's behind us. The point is, these pages are not visibly different than any other account, but we have a banner for such things here.

This user has been blocked {{{length}}} from editing HRWiki, per ruling of administrators for {{{reason}}}. See the block log.

When I attempted to add this template, it was undone, as I, admittably, was overstepping my allowances. But again, that was a year ago, and that isn't the point. The point is that we have this template, can use it, but are not using it. And it isn't even the only one. Some templates haven't been used since we changed our wiki's holding, and won't ever need use. Examples include wrongtitle, soft redirect and the rather bizarre Trophy. Where I'm getting at about all of this is:

  • 1 — Should we add the above template to currently existing user-pages without a user, leave them, or delete them altogether?
  • 2 — Should we weed out obsolete, unneeded templates that only take up space and never see use.

I bring this up now as, since we are in a lull, it is quiet enough to properly discuss this without thousands of other projects being done. So now that we have the silence to discuss it, let's discuss. --Jellote wuz here 01:06, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

These templates haven't been deleted because they are being used. Special:WhatLinksHere, accessible through its similarly named-link in the sidebar, lists the transclusions of a page. Each of the templates you've mentioned are currently transcluded, mainly onto the userpages of those who have been long gone. {{Trophy}}, unlike the others however, is being discussed. In my opinion, it would only waste time to handle/substitute these transclusions so we can safely delete the templates. In regards to {{block}}, I don't mean to speak for the sysops, but I find it draws more attention to user-critical situations than necessary. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 02:51, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Mr. Bland?

I was editing a few seconds ago and I saw "Mr blaNd" in the CAPTCHA! What happened? --206.116.143.157 01:43, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Every now and then, the CAPTCHA will pick a word from the body of work. (Originally it was part of an April Fools' joke. Afterward, I incorporated the Homestar Runner-related ones permanently into the mix, chosen at random intervals.) There are 193 to find. Collect them all! It's dot com 03:56, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

[edit] others pages

Is there a "Non-Letters being treated as letters" or a "Time Machines" page? I wanna know! --206.116.143.157 22:45, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

The first is at least partially covered by Internet Slang. As for Time Machines, how many times have time machines appeared in the Homestar Runner world? I can think of a whole zero. One email mentioned them, but that's not enough for a page. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:17, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
oops. i meant to say 'non-numbers being treated as numbers'. (e. g. NT6, 20X6, purple.) as for time machines, i wanted the page to be a page refrencing time machines, not showing actual time machines! also, there's another refrence to a time machine, but you never see it. --206.116.143.157 22:24, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Wouldn't we then have to allow indirect mentions of time machines? IE: Poopsmith dressing up as Future Doc Brown? If so, I'm against that. Regardless, two mentions doesn't warrant a page either. ColdReactive 01:55, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Homestar on Chatroulette

Listen, I don't know if it was The Brother's Chaps or not, but I just talked to Homestar for a good couple minutes with somebody who did a flawless voice. They also had a flash overlay that went along with the conversation. Let me know if anyone else has witnessed this phenomenon. --74.76.114.79 07:50, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Depends on what the content of these templates would be. I assume rando would behave like Random Toon? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 00:13, 1 June 2011 (UTC), edited 00:21, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
We already have a random button and we don't need a second to be discussed template. — Defender1031*Talk 00:33, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Okay, after seeing them, we definitely don't need them. Rando is a bunch of gibberish template code that does essentially nothing at all but print broken template code, and even if the proper closing braces were added it'd do nothing but send some parameters straight through in a roundabout manner. The TBD one is essentially a more affirmatively worded version of the original, but without any of the elegance and namespace magic. There's no reason to put a notice about whether a page should stay as opposed to whether a page should be removed. — Defender1031*Talk 01:08, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Featured Template

I think the Featured Article Template: {{featuredarticle}} should be shown on the main page and not on the talk page. I thinks its good for a user to know if an article is featured, so if the template is on the main page, it will be easier for new and/or inexperienced users to know if the article is a featured one. Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Rondleman! Stuff I did.Talk. 21:49, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't think so. Wikipedia does mark Featured Articles (and, in a move I thoroughly oppose, even Good Articles) in the mainspace, but that's because Wikipedia FAs are chosen on their encyclopedic merit. Ours, by contrast, are chosen on a number of factors, not all of which have much to do with quality. To quote the FA template, being a Featured Article "...means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool." So I don't think marking them in the mainspace is a good idea. Heimstern Läufer 02:43, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
