[edit] What?

I would say this on the Fanstuff Wiki, but it's locked. How come I can edit on this wiki, but not on Fanstuff? --Mini-Trogdor 16:56, 11 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki Maker

I need someone who knows how to install wikis because I am STUMPED!– Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 06:20, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)

We're talking MediaWiki, right? Just upload all the files to your webserver and go to the front page. You'll be told to go set it up first, with a link to the installation page. There, just fill out the information. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 14:26, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
But i don't have my own website like www.pertmywert.com – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 21:04, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
You might want to start with the documentation for installation then. -- Tom 21:06, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
What is the MySQL server name? – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 21:28, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Your hosting provider should let you know. If you're installing it on your own machine, it's most likely localhost (or 127.0.0.1). --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 22:08, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Livemark feed failed to load?

Why is it, that every time I try and add the Recent changes RSS feed to my live bookmarks in Firefox, that I get the error "livemark feed failed to load"? I tried in Google Desktop Search Beta 2, and got an "unsupported web clip version" error. If I try and open the RSS feed with Firefox (not adding to livemarks) I get this text (without viewing the source):

XML Parsing Error: xml processing instruction not at start of external entity
Location: http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=rss
Line Number 2, Column 1:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Anybody have any ideas how to fix this problem? --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 20:22, 14 September 2005 (BST)

The issue appears to be the blank line at the top of the document. This is not allowed according to the standard.
The problem should be fixable by editing index.php - exactly where is a little hard to say without the file, but it should be fairly easy to find. I can't say if this is a bug in MediaWiki, but the current Wikipedia feed *does* validate, so if it is, it should be fixed in a later version (1.6 at the latest).
Alternatively, you could just wait for IE7, if it does not care about this (like IE6), it'll be able to use the feed. :p --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 20:44, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
From taking a look at the English Wikipedia's feed, it looks like this has been fixed in Version 1.5. Though if I knew where to edit, I wouldn't mind trying to fix it. -- Tom 21:02, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Considering this page suffers from the same "issue", I'm guessing the very first line of index.php is blank. If this is the case, deleting it should fix the problem - if it's not, look at includes/Feed.php next for the same symptom.
If both of those fail, there's probably one further down in one of the scripts, outside of the <?PHP ?> tags, but it might take a while to find it. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 21:15, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Oh yes - it's probably worth noting that Wikipedia have switched to MediaWiki 1.6 alpha, so in theory, the bug might not have been fixed before then - though I consider that rather doubtful. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 22:22, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hmm. 1.6alpha must be very recent then, since [SourceForge http://sourceforge.net/projects/wikipedia/] and mediawiki.org still show 1.5rc4 as the latest unstable.
And I didn't have any luck with our mysterious newline. From what I can tell, the code that outputs the offending area seems to be around line 180. -- Tom 22:32, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Alpha versions will usually not be released publicly, mainly since there's a rather high risk of problems - although there's always CVS is one wants to experiment. I imagine they're very close to releasing the the final version of 1.5, since they usually run the latest possible version on Wikipedia - if 1.5 was not ready, they would not switch to a new alpha.
At any rate, the problem seems to be in a different file than Feed.php, since the blank line is also visible on this page.
I tried booting Apache and opening up my own MediaWiki installation (1.4.5), but the error is not visible on my side. Therefore, it's either been introduced somewhere between 1.4.5 and 1.4.9, or is something that ended up here somehow.
You should be able to catch the culprit if you run diff on the distribution and compare it with the 1.4.9 release - if you don't have access to a system with diff, I can do it (I will do it nine times), pending a copy of the current installation. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 23:03, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, it struck me as odd that they are already using 1.6alpha when 1.5 isn't even stable yet. And you're right, that probably means 1.5 is close to being released.
As for the diff of the 1.4.5 index.php and our current index.php, here you are:
197,198d196
< case 'render':
< 				die("rendering is not supported in this version of MediaWiki.");
Any ideas? (I also ran a diff of a fresh 1.4.5 install compared to a fresh 1.4.9 install, which I just sent you.) -- Tom 03:04, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Fixed. -- Tom 20:56, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] External Links

I think the fanstuff forum should be added to the external links bar. -- Super Sam 09:09, 17 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Nope, sorry. That there is an unofficial Fanstuff forum. -- Tom 13:04, 17 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Unofficial? Exactly how would you define "official" then? -- Super Sam 08:09, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Likely by being one set up by JoeyDay and/or Tom. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 13:47, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Another good definition of official would be if it's hosted on our server under our domain. Something like fsforum.hrwiki.org would be official, whereas s13.invisionfree.com/Fanstuff isn't. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:43, 28 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I really think there should be a more obvious link to the official site (www.homestarrunner.com) on the front page.

[edit] Fanstuff Timezone

Hey, I was wondering if it is appropriate for the fanstuff wiki's timezone to be UTC, not MDT. UTC is used on the knowledge-base, so wouldn't it make sense for the default timezone of the fanstuff wiki to be UTC? This would change the time displayed in the history for logged out users, and also would change the timezone used in signatures for all users. 203.208.88.138 04:23, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hosting

Are the two wikis still hosted on Goleman Networks? Because in the source code of any wiki page there used to be a message saying something like "Served by Goleman Networks in 0.22 secs" but now says "Served by fsserver1.fellowsites.org in 0.22 secs". If its hosted by Fellowsites, the message in the footer on the knowledge-base and fanstuff wiki be changed. Or am I missing something (I don't know a lot of stuff about servers and hosting and stuff)? 203.208.88.138 04:36, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

We recently moved from Goleman to a new server, yes. Beyond that, I'm not sure of much else. Thunderbird 05:24, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)
The new server is still owned by Goleman Networks, but has been branded with the name FellowSites because we'll be reselling hosting on the new server under that name. Sorry for any confusion. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:15, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Ah, okay. 203.208.88.138

[edit] Erm...what's up with the Forum?

Hey guys, whenever I try to access the forum, it says:

The operation timed out when attempting to contact forum.hrwiki.org

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. --Acekirby|My Talk 20:46, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It's down. It will be up again. I wish people wouldn't post here every time the forum goes down, and vice versa. — InterruptorJones 20:51, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. Thanks for clearing that up. --Acekirby|My Talk 20:52, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Regular Easter Egg feature

I'd like to suggest a new section on the main page that details easter eggs within random tunes/emails. I actually think this could replace the "featured" part of the page and would be appealing to fans, who might not have spotted them all.

It could just be me, but I'm not really clear on what it is you're suggesting. Thunderbird 19:44, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Random Toon

Random Toon should really be on the Main Page, along with Quote of the Week, Weekly Fanstuff, and Sketchbook. Which means we would have to rename their section, 'Weeklies'. Anybody got an idea or opinion on how we should change this? Thunderbird 19:09, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Why should we change this? The other three articles are updated every week. Except for housekeeping, Random Toon isn't updated at all. — It's dot com 19:15, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
True, but Legal is on the main page. And that's updated FAR less than Random Toon. It seems as though if it's linked to from their Main Page, we do the same on ours. Which leaves just the Random Toon. Besides, It's not like people use the links there to access the newest Quote of the Week or Sketchbook. They follow the link at the 'What's New' section like everybody else. And additionally, where else is Random Toon linked to? If somebody looks on the website, finds the Random Toon button on there, and then come here to find out about it, where would they look for the page? Does any of this make sense? Thunderbird 19:30, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Random Toon is linked on Main Pages in the section at the top about the four buttons. Legal, on the other hand, is not linked to from any article page. In addition, all the links on our front page link to articles about the content of the various buttons, whereas Random Toon seems to me to be an article about the button itself. — It's dot com 19:45, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Well the button itself IS the content of what Random Toon is. It has no page of it's own. But it does have the button. Come to think of it, it's in the exact same boat as the other weeklies, they don't have pages either. Just pop up boxes. And Legal is far more useless of a page than 'Random Toon'. Why exclude just ONE link from their main page from being on ours? I really think it makes sense to link the Random Toon button on the main page. Thunderbird 19:59, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I realize that this isn't my arguement, but the Random toon is on the navbar, and is also on the weeklies bar. It should be linked on the main page. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 20:01, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
What do you mean this isn't your argument? You're welcome to add to any and every discussion on a public talk page, and most of the time even on other users' talk pages when you're not directly involved. To speak to your point, however, I think TBC only stuck the random button in their weeklies section because they didn't have a better place to put it. I think the fact that it's not actually a weekly feature means it shouldn't go in our weeklies section. — It's dot com 20:10, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I think Random has a place on the main page, but at the top in the main menu instead of in the weeklies section. It seems to fit there better. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 20:15, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Yes, It probably be under miscellaneous. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 20:18, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Well that's why I'm suggesting the name change from 'weeklies'. If it was already named 'The Little Circle Buttons On The Top Of The Main Page', there'd be no question to add it there. I really don't think miscellaneous is the right section for it. It's part of the four button set. Thunderbird 20:21, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
But it's also part of the navbar, and the sbemail menu. Look at the main page now, up at the top right. What do you think? — It's dot com 20:24, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
(Edit conflict with above) I was actually talking about the Main Menu, above the blue and red boxes. I can see why you want it with the weeklies, but I think it just fits in the grand scheme of things better at the top. I think we may need some fresh ideas in this thread as well. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 20:26, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I tried it under 'Popups'. I think it's got a nice ring to it. And it is what they have in common. So which one should we go with? I really feel strongly about Popups. Thunderbird 20:28, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Despite the negative connotation I have with the word 'popup', it really does fit. I kinda like it. And Random Toon does need to be mentioned. It's an integral part of their main page(s); why not ours? --DorianGray
Er, I guess you guys completely skipped over my post four above this one. — It's dot com
Oh. It's already there. Colour me unobservant. In that case, I retract my previous statement, and humbly retreat to my merely lurking around this article instead of talking. --DorianGray
I really don't like "popups." The three weekly links were unified in the fact that they are actually updated weekly. Trying to stretch a description onto all four buttons just doesn't seem to fit to me. — It's dot com 20:45, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Well you already know my opinion on it, but I still think that it looks better under Popups, dot com. They're still unified in the fact that they're four buttons, isolated in look, at the top. If you go by updated weekly, you could almost have added Strong Sad's Lament for a while there. Thunderbird 20:48, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
{see also next thread}

I think the Main Page should just stay as is. Homestramy20|Talk 21:14, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Without Random Toon? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:15, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I think With the tiny addition of 'Popups' and Random Toon. That's the part of THEIR main page TBC changed... Thunderbird 21:17, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
The fact is that it can't stay the way it is, because it's already been changed twice. First by me, then by Thunderbird. The question is, which link do we like better? The "Random Button" up at the top that matches the navbar (which was also updated), or the "popups" version that matches the buttons. We shouldn't have it on there twice, should we? It doesn't seem like it should. To tell the truth, the "popups" version is growing on me, although I'm still not crazy about the name... ;) — It's dot com 21:32, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Yes! I knew it! Sorry for the late reply, I had to go out for a while. If you're asking my opinion though, it remains the same. Along with the other Popups, under whichever name. Thunderbird 22:24, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
To clarify, there are two links to Random Toon on the main page now (one is along the top and called "Random Buttons", the other is with the three weekly items under popups in the pink box). There should probably only be one. We know what the people who have already commented think. Now we need to know what others think, so please post your opinions below. — It's dot com 04:39, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Sorry I never spoke up on this issue. My vote would've been for exactly what you did, Thunderbird, namely removing the random toon from the main navigation and leaving it in the Popups section. I also like the change from "Weeklies" to "Popups". I really appreciate that you wanted Tom or me to weigh in on this, but I'm glad you went through with the change without waiting on us. Your opinion is just as important as ours, and we'll always back you up on any mission critical decision you make like this one. Good work. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 16:22, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Yeah. I saw all this happen and was pleased with the result as well, so I just left it as that. -- Tom 17:03, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I guess the solution we're going with is the best of our available choices, but in the back of my mind it's hard to shake the feeling that we're giving equal salience to things that only share a marginal trait. Oh well. — It's dot com 17:10, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Strong Sad's Lament

Why isn't Strong Sad's Lament linked on the main page? It's been updated at least as much as Marzipan's Answering Machine. — It's dot com 20:52, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Uhoh.. Hmmm... I think this conversation has become decidedly more complex. Well I think it's safe to say Strong Sad's Lament is on hiatus again, possibly. I just don't know what to do about SSL though. I think it's safe to leave it off for now, it's not linked on their main page. And whenever it is updated, you can just follow the link on the 'What's New' section. Thunderbird 20:55, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I think that SSL may be updated even [more] then Marzipans answering machine. Just thought to point that out. Homestramy20|Talk 20:56, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
But I think it falls under Stinkoman 20X6. They're both updated periodically, but not Main Page material. Thunderbird 20:58, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I disagree. Stinkoman will come to an end with the next level. Strong Sad's blog could be updated indefinitely. And, I should note, Marzipan's answering machine is updated only about twice a year. I think visitors would find a link to SSL useful. — It's dot com 21:03, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
But it's an Easter egg. A pretty freaking big one, if you ask me, but an Easter egg nonetheless, and should not be on the main page. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:07, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Oh man. I think this discussion is in severe need of either Tom's or Joey's Beauracratic input. Personally, I think the main page is okay without SSL. But come to think of it, maybe it should be on there... I'm not too opinionated about that though. I just want Random Toon under 'Popups'. Thunderbird 21:09, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
E.L., I think you are exactly right. I withdraw my suggestion to add SSL. I told you your input was important. :) — It's dot com 21:28, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hey, thanks! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:29, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Background Images

Would like to know the HTML for the snazzy HR and SB pictures in the background of the main page windows. Cannot find it in the source and I want to use something similiar for another wiki.--69.76.239.136 21:43, 28 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Lists

I know I posted this here, but almost no one's replying, and it does concern the main page, so I'll repost it here:

Should we post a link to the Lists Category on the main page? Because as of right now, it doesn't really have any place connecting to it, and this is the only place that officially connects to pages such as "Fonts," "Sound Effects," "Fourth Wall Breakages" and so on... - Joshua
No, I don't think that's necessary. We generally don't link to Category pages, they are just helpful ways to keep articles organized. -- Tom 23:13, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, but it kind of bugs me that a bunch of good pages such as the above have no official page that links to them, just a few appropiate instances here and there and a single, unlinked-to category that is as obscure as the rest. - Joshua 00:22, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Every article on the Wiki is linked to from another article. Categories are not articles and generally should not be linked to from articles. -- Tom 03:27, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Although you are right that categories are not articles. It would be nice for people to be able to browse categories with ease. I would think that a link from the navigation bar would be even better! As for links to the aforementioned collection of article, perhaps a page or two devoted to "Resources used by TBC" and "Literary Concepts" or whatever you wanna name them, might be appropriate. Now I go shopping.--Stux 03:36, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)
At one point we toyed with using something like the following:

Homestar Runner.com Content
Toons | Features | Games | Characters | Downloads | Special Pages | Regular Updates | HSR Navigation

The World Of Homestar Runner
Items | Places | Bands | Songs | Movies | TV Shows | Companies | Organizations | Contests | Inside Jokes | Running Gags | Lists

Real World

Homestar Runner Wiki
Wiki Maintenance

We decided against using this a while ago. And obviously this wouldn't go well with what we are using now, but I'm open to opinions. -- Tom 06:35, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)
I'll indent less to make this stand out a bit. Anyway, I see what you mean! I looked at the proposed and current formats and I definitely like the current one better. It allows people to gain more background information of what their looking from a structured page, rather than looking at a cut and dry page. It definitely rocks. However, there may be people who like to use categories or know vaguely what their looking for without knowing what it's called. My suggestion is this: we can have a cut and dry "Category Browsing Page" with all of these boring links (and any technical information that may have some highly structured ordering to it), and then we can either discretely link it on the main page somewhere (we don't want it to gain prominence and then have people mistakenly use it as the primary means of browsing), or place it as a feature of the navigation toolbox bars. --Stux 07:25, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Um, this is a little off topic, but why is the first Archive Page named 1-20, while it has 25 items listed on it? (Did ppl add to that?) This talk page needs yet another archiving I beleive. --Stux 07:44, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Tom, you said "Categories are not articles and generally should not be linked to from articles." This is not true. Go to the main page. Click "Inside Jokes." Then look at our list of said inside jokes that is linked to at the bottom of the page. Or go to "Characters," scroll down and choose Character Evolution. That fact is is that in appropiate places we use categories instead of index pages. If nothing else, we should make another page such as "Misc. Pages" or something and link to them there. - Joshua 02:11, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)

not to sound stupid, but how do you validate it?

The traler is about 4mbs big and was sensored by the brothers chaps for reasons I don't know. I thought this would be interresting to post. If you want it drop me an e-mail @ har_hac@hotmail.com and please be desceret about it ( I don't know why it was banned )

Hmm, strange. Umm, how did you get this, and whats it about? H*R 700

The traler appears to be have banned somewhere in the compy 386 days, I got it from e-mule tring to get as many h*r toon files as I could and this came up so I downloaded it, thought it would be interesting. It's a spoof of the origanal matrix w/Keanu Reaves as Neo

Hmm, perheaps they banned it so the woudn't get sued, or something like that. H*R 700

maybe your right anyway, here's the website: Over and out, I gotta get some breakfast ( It's like 5:56 AM )

http://b.domaindlx.com/sbmail200/sbmatrix.swf <--- Right click and select save as

E-mail me and tell me what you think

Well, it didn't work for me, but with a seek bar I was able to have a look. My guess is it is just something a fan made, not something TBC made. Which means it never got "censored". Can anyone who watched it please tell me if the toon had authentic voices (and not just sound clips swiped from other toons, original, never before heard on H*R.com, authentic voices). If it does, then it probably was made by TBC, if not or if there isn't any voices at all it is most likely fan made. «Rob» 12:10, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Im not sure why just playing the file does not work but with WM player classic you can skip the green preview screen thingy and just view the rest of the file.

Right now the host's bandwidth has been exceeded and no one can view it right now. Can you email it to me? (joshua368@gmail.com) - Joshua 12:18, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)
It is indeed fanstuff. I managed to get it before the bandwidth was exceeded. It doesn't have any voices, just a song by evanescence and the names of presumably the people who made it. It uses the original graphics from H*R toons and is meant to be watched inside an HTML page much like an SBEmail. It is, of course 4MB in size despite its short playing time (possibly from the song it plays). Oh yeah for me, to play it, I had to right click on the swf and click "play", because it was set to "loop" by default. --Stux 12:21, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

If you guys want it any more today your going to have to send it to other people as you receve it, I won't be here

I know what this is all about. In the times of the .net forum, one user made a page about Strong Bad Matrix. He had all the plot figured out and everything. He made the treiler for it using TBC's own graphics, not his own. The guy got an email from their legal edviser asking him to make his own toon fron scratch, or stop everything. After that, the story got all blurry (No one wanted to talk about it). But I do know that some T-shirts with Strong Bad Matrix logo were supposed to be sold, and that raised more legal issues. Anyway, the project was terminated and the file can only be found on file-shering programs. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 12:35, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I recall reading the exact same thing somewhere, it could have been while I was going through LiveJournals getting the old updates or something. This guy was all excited about the 'Strong Bad Matrix' or something, and then eventually he said that the project was in permanent limbo due to legal issues. I'm quite sure El Coolio is right. [edit] Sandbox to New Page

Is there any easy way to turn something I made in the Sandbox into a regular page?---RatherAnnoying 23:57, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

There is, but I have a feeling the page you want to create is going to be shot down. If yuo still want to do it, copy the code in the sandbox except for the template line, the type the title of the new page in the address bar. Once you get taken to the blank page you can edit it and paste the cose there, then save it. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 23:59, 11
