After the pank page, at the main page there a poll of the day: This weeks one was gibberish until i found this:

File Download?

Whenever I click the edit tab at the top of any page, it comes up with a window asking me if I want to save a file. The file is "index.php". I always click "Cancel" to be on the safe side but that means I can't edit. Strangely, it haven't got this problem before and it doesn't appear if I try to edit anonymously. Also, I can edit without getting this window if I edit a section, revert a page or start a new comment (like what I am doing now). It's only if I click on the edit tab at the top. Does this happen to anyone else and is the file OK to save? Please help because I can't edit efficently! – The Chort 15:33, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

"Good news, everyone!" "I think I has the soloution!" OK, enough quotes. The main thing is, I don't have the File Download problem anymore! I think because of yesterday's April Fool's prank, my preferences got messed up somehow. You see, I had the "Use external editor by default" option checked which really meant "Download files onto my computer so they can be edited in a text editing program". By unchecking this option, it doesn't try to save any files so there's no more problems! "Thanks for your help, you old broom stick!" – The Chort 18:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

WikiTikiTavi & server load

Is WikiTikiTavi really easier on a single server than MediaWiki, or was that a joke as well? Jecowa 16:49, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

• Probably, considering that WTT is a less powerful engine, but it is pretty unlikely that there would be a need to switch softwares. The pages may have been less because there was less formatting, but images seem to me to be the most demanding. Dylnuge (Talk · Edits) 17:09, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

All that stuff about 'Tavi being better for our setup was made up. In fact, it was purposely exaggerated a bit so that people would realize it was a joke. 'Tavi wouldn't stand a chance running our wiki, which is why we switched away from it in the first place. Happy April Fool's! — Joey (talk·edits) 18:17, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Format

Eh, I thought it was really funny. I was serious when I said I was happy to use the WTT software, though. Not only was it a prank, but it was a special treat for people who didn't get to use it/a source of nostalga for older users. By the way, for those who are wondering, there's already been a lot of conversation today that's been archived. I don't want to rehash any of that, but I do want to seize the opportunity to get preachy as usual. This whole thing had me "seriously concerned," for a number of reasons.

1. A number of people knew, or were fairly sure, that it was a joke, but were very angry anyway and talked about crying for hours, leaving forever, or doing unspecified things with machine guns. I'm concerned about these people senses of humor. In particular it was called "cruel" more than once. People spoke as though we'd called a transportation strike in NYC, instead of simply changed the appearance (not even the functionality!) of a reference website about an Internet cartoon. If losing the soft blues and reds of the HRWiki really caused you substantial pain and suffering, then maybe the wiki is a little too important in your life!
2. A number of other people decided it was for real, and reacted even more violently. Now, in their defense, it's kind of understandable that a change that huge, enacted with no warning or discussion, would raise some ruckus (see the next point: that's why it wouldn't happen!). But I'm concerned about this demographic, too, and their ability to handle change. What if this had been real? I was really saddened to see that so many people were ready to simply throw in the towel and walk away, or used their departure as threats. It's safe to say that this particular change will never happen, Change, in general, happens. Relationships break up. Parents remarry. You get a new boss. You get in a car wreck. If you can't handle your wiki changing color, how are you going to roll with those punches?
3. Finally, for both groups, a word of stern comfort. At one point, JoeyDay said that the sysops had been discussing the change for a long time in Da Basement, and that it had been archived by now. A lot of people did a lot of tricks with code and other techie methods of trying to prove or disprove that it was a hoax, but all it really took was following up on his claim. There was no discussion there, archived or otherwise. And that brings me to the heart of today's sermon. This kind of change wouldn't happen without a lot of discussion and wiki consensus. Remember? That's how things are done around here. We vote on stuff. We talk about it incessantly for weeks. The wiki is not "run" by sysops or admins in the sense that they randomly decide, in secret, to do something and then put it in place overnight. (Um... hehe... with the exception of this once.) This concerns me, that people would seriously think a change like that that affected everyone would be enacted without discussion, warning, input, or participation. I would hope people trust the sysops not to pull something like that, or, if they did, would stand up to them and supportively, constructively, but courageously tell them it's not right.
4. In conclusion:
5. Perspective is good;
6. Change is inevitable (except from a vending machine);
7. Give the wiki more credit;
8. Investigate explanations; and
9. When in doubt... chill. (If we were steering a Nuclear Class Submarine, a moments' hesitation or reflection and a relaxed attitude would be deadly. We're not.)

For the record, I trusted the sysops completely. I think that that's a sign of how truly good you guys were. But I still can't see why there was so many people trying to prove it wrong. I heard countless people (you know who you are) trying to prove to me that it was a prank. I cannot believe that you thought there would be any benefit in ruining the prank for everyone. Why? Why did you think it was so imperative to make sure people knew and the sysop's trick was ruined?
