[edit] Too Dark
The red template background color I think is too dark. It makes the blue "Halloween" link text hard to read. I think a lighter red would be better. --Stux 19:35, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- I made it orange.76.112.122.212 22:46, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- I think it's better before. So I reverted it. What does anyone think of it? Sam the Man 22:48, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Ween Template
What if the Halloween template looked more like Template:aprilfool and Template:decemberweennav?

- I don't know how to tighten up the spacing AND employ "font-size:smaller" (in the manner of Template:Decemberweenvent Calendar Nav)
- Fan 'Stumes are separated onto their own line because they're released after the holiday proper. Ween Intro is on its own line because it's a "site component" rather than a regular release.
- I'm guessing Ween Intro is from 2001 because that's when the regular Old New Intro was implemented.
- "Halloween Safety" is in there twice because, unlike other teasers, it has a separate short toon ahead of it.

[edit] Discussion
So I wanted to give back some feedback, mainly based on personal opinion:
- Personally, I prefer the first sample, where only the big toons are listed by year.
- I find the second sample compelling but I'm not in love with it. I don't think it's useful to split the "other" stuff by year. Fan Constumes: I'd be okay with grouping by year but OTOH I like that it has its own grouping. I'm 50/50 on that one.
- I feel the third, 2D Matrix-like table is compelling, but at the end of the day I find it too busy :(. Maybe reducing the width of the bar on the left side might help but I wonder how it would look on smaller screens?
That's my feedback for revision 833605. So, I hope this helps! --Stux 14:00, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for chiming in! Here are my thoughts:
- I think at minimum the Big Toons should be grouped by year. Not only is this the same practice for the two other holiday navs, there are so many big toons and their names are so long that the block of links becomes hard to parse.
- I kind of like keeping the loading games with their respective Big Toon, but agree that organizing everything by year isn't that useful. I'm leaning towards keeping all fan costumes together rather than splitting them up by year. I'm also concerned that the columnar layout would be hard to update annually.
- Interesting but too busy and too much dead space. I also don't like that the header column has to repeat itself twice.
- Some other thoughts on the current template:
- Punkin Show could potentially be filed under "Fan Costumes", it's sort of cousins with Fan Costumes '09.
- I hesitate to call Punkin Stencils a "game"... it's interactive, but it's not filed under Games and never was listed on any games menu on the site. Maybe a move to "Site Components"? -- Bleu Ninja 16:51, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi all,
- I've gone ahead and applied the per-year split from the original draft into the template. At a minimum I think this seems to be a change everyone agrees on doing. Personally, I think this is sufficient, but we can continue discussing alternatives here on this page!
- Speaking of "this page", I'm sure everyone has noticed that I've moved the discussion from the sandbox over to here, the template's own talk page! I felt this was a more appropriate place to have the discussion and it would keep the template drafts intact without having to worry about a Sandbox clear burying the discussion in page history. --Stux 11:52, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- I made an edit shrinking the template down a bit (mainly by dividing the two columns into three). It was reverted for being cramped, but I don't think it looks cramped at all; in fact I think the current look has the opposite problem, being too bulky and filled with empty space. That wouldn't be much of a problem on its own, but considering this template is used on so many pages, I assume it's intended to be convenient and unobtrusive (as opposed to the Halloween article, which is already like a larger, more complete version of the template). I also just think it's more visually pleasing when the information is more tightly packed together. (I'm also not sure what "with two columns you had everything in one neat line each" means.) - Ah, I realize now that a large part of that was due to my setup, and I owe you screenshots so you can see what I'm talking about. Basically, what happened is this: recently I've had to use my Linux laptop more than my Windows laptop and I don't know how to make everything "bigger" at the OS level. (Windows allows you to scale everything.) So, instead I "zoomed in" all pages of the wiki in my browser so I could read the text! For some reason it defaults to "really, really, tiny". As a result, some of the zoomed-in text wraps over to the next line, which doesn't look at good.
- So this is what I meant by "cramped" and "with two columns you had everything in one neat line each". There was little whitespace shown around the table and stuff was wrapped around. Although my case is unusual, it's possible other environments may run into that too. The 2-column version did not have this problem even when zoomed-in, but I'll have to double-check to see what it looks like in my tiny font. I'll see if I can upload screenshots by the end of the day and from there we can figure out a good final layout. --Stux 14:21, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- That makes sense! For some reason I'd neglected to consider different resolutions and magnifications. (For reference, here's how both versions look on my end.) I agree that we should probably come to a compromise that looks good on different screens. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 22:27, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

- I've finally uploaded the screenshots to show how both versions of the template look on my screen, both the zoomed-in "so I can still read the text" and the zoomed-out "does Linux want me to go blind?" versions. Your versions are very similar to my "zoomed-out" versions. Here is a gallery of them:
- I can see where this text-zoom thing makes it hard to figure out a happy-medium for this. :-/ Personally, perhaps we can get away with a 2-column version that's narrower? Or would that be too narrow? My personal preferences lean towards the "more whitespace is fine" side of things. --Stux 16:42, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
