[edit] Hints and Tips

  • When talking to Ripberger, just use "talk ripberger" or "talk magistrate" in lowercase letters. Otherwise, the game may not recognize the command.
  • Type "look map" at any time to view the map. note that you must ALREADY have the map before you can look at it.
  • When fighting monsters in the maze, use the attack that starts with the first letter of that monster's name. Therefore...

[edit] Walkthrough

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

After giving your name at the beginning, type "hold breath" (or "nose") and "get tinkle" (or "metal"), which is a key in the chamber pot. ("reach into chamberpot" also works.) Don't forget to BREATHE. Type "breathe", "release nose", "unplug nose", "let go nose" or "smell".

"get hay", which turns out to be moldy bread.

"open door" and go "south".

"look at david bowie" (optional).

"use key" to unlock the drawer.

"get map". "look map" to get the maze directions. It disintegrates, so you'll have to write them down.

Go "north" and "talk magistrate".

Go "north", where you'll find a rat with a nametag. "look at nametag" (his name is Percy) and "talk to percy". He'll offer you the plague.

Go "north", and you'll get the plague (this can't be avoided).

"get mop", as you will need it to fight off monsters.

Now follow the directions from the map (see above). If you'd like, you can stop to "mop" when you see stains (there's a stain in every room of the maze). This is completely optional, and you only earn "experience points" from doing this (which do not add to your point total.) (Note: If you "mop stain" in a room where you've already cleaned the stain, you leave a new stain behind thanks to your "increasingly soiled mop".)

To kill the monsters use the strike with the same letter as the beginning of the monster's name (eg. "middlin" for Mongrel, "high" for Hongrel, and "low" for Longrel).

When you get to the kitchen, go "eastward" (you can't just type "east" or "e" here) to the infirmary.

"talk to doctor". Say "no" when he asks if you can wait. He'll saw off your plague, give you a sucker, and send you back to the kitchen. Do not talk to the healer; the doctor and the healer are separate entities.

"look at placard".

"get picture".

"talk to chef". He is really a Dongrel. "use picture" or "use sucker" to make Dongrel drop your mop, then "get mop" and "use mop" (if you never "talk to chef", you can skip straight to "use mop" and avoid losing 1 life).

It doesn't matter what command you enter next. Percy will show up. "take off loincloth" or "give loincloth" to kill him.

You win and IT'S OVER!!

[edit] Fun Facts

[edit] Explanations

  • The second-to-last letter in "Auguft" is supposed to be a long s ("ſ"), which resembles a lowercase "f" (almost identical in some typesets).
  • A mongrel is an animal or a plant resulting from various interbreedings, especially a dog of mixed or undetermined breed.

[edit] Remarks

  • The map is not necessary to win the game, and therefore neither is the key. It's possible to beat the game without ever taking the key from the chamber pot or entering Ripberger's office (though you'll have a low score).
  • Although the map disintegrates the first time you look at it, you can still "look map" after that to recall the map from your "parchmentic memory". Your "parchmentic memory" is wrong, so write down the moves from the first time you looked at the map.

[edit] Goofs

  • The map you get in the game is slightly incorrect. The direction listed in bold has been left out: "West, West, North, West, North, North, North, East, East, North, East, North, North." (The map shown above is correct.)
  • The game says that the maximum score is 100, but unless you use "get flask", there is no way to obtain this score. The maximum without "get flask" is 96.
    • It is also possible to get a score higher than 100, if you continue to "get flask".
  • When the King shows up at the end, the text is misspelled "Congratualtions" instead of "congratulations".
  • When you get the hay in the cell, the second "moldy" is misspelled as "modly".
  • If a non-understandable command is typed, the game will respond, "That does not computeth. Type HELP is thou needs of it." instead of "if".
  • In the sentence "Thou art as naked as the day god made thee.", the word "god" should be capitalized.

[edit] Glitches

  • When you go north from the office, you are given the description of the office, but are really in the hallway as expected.
  • If you die, when you're asked "Play Again? [Y/N]", pressing N doesn't do anything.
  • If you type "south" or "s" after the magistrate goes into his office, it will show a different response right after the normal one.
  • If you "take off loincloth" or "remove loincloth" before you are supposed to, the game will play as if you are still wearing it (i.e. you still stuff things into it, and Ripberger doesn't mention you being naked).
  • If you press down on the arrows, the "that does not computeth" screen comes up, but if you press it many times fast, it will appear many times filling up almost the entire narration text space.
  • While in the maze, you can eat bread (and get the points and reset the plague counter) even if you never collected the bread. However, in the infirmary, you cannot eat bread at all no matter what you did, even though you'll still have the plague.

[edit] Inside References

  • This game is a sequel of Thy Dungeonman, introduced in the Strong Bad Email video games.
  • Dan is also referenced if at any time you type "Dan".
  • If you stop holding your nose input SNIFF, you get a line of a line of dialogue saying "Art thou wearing Wumpus, the new fragrance by Monarch?".

[edit] Real-World References

  • In the Magistrate's office are three paintings, one each of King Arthur, King Graham, and David Bowie. "King Graham" is probably a reference to either the hero of the PC game King's Quest, or Graham Chapman, who played King Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
    • If you "look david bowie" in the the magistrate's office, the game replies: "There's something about that man... The picture was taken during the Tin Machine era. Thou art more of a Ziggy Stardust fan."
      • David Bowie was a famous English rock artist whose career spanned from the '60s to 2016.
      • Tin Machine was a four-piece rock band he formed from 1989 to 1992. Bowie dressed in suits and wore a mustache and beard.
      • Ziggy Stardust was an androgynous character David Bowie invented and performed as for his classic 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie wore wild, Japan-influenced outfits and the wild red hair that Strong Sad wears in Halloween Fairstival.
  • Ratt is a heavy metal band.
  • Nutella is a real food made of hazelnut and chocolate. Nutella is meant to be used as a dip or food spread.
  • When you enter your name, one of the things the game calls your name is "scrumtrilescent", which is a reference to Saturday Night Live's spoof of Inside the Actors' studio, wherein James Lipton (Will Ferrell) says "That show was delightful. No. No. It was brilliant. No, no, no, no. There is no word to describe its perfection, so I am forced to make one up. And I'm going to do so right now. Scrumtrilescent."
  • Ripburger is also the name of a character from the LucasArts game Full Throttle.
  • The Enchantment under the Parapets dance is a reference to the "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance in Back to the Future.
  • Looking at the sous-chef/dongrel after it has been revealed says "That dongrel is one bad moth... Shut yo mouth!", referring to the theme from Shaft, in which a line is often similarly censored.
  • If you attempt to search the hay after obtaining the bread, the game's narrator will mock you saying, "If thou only hadst a brain, thou would remember searching it quite thoroughly already." The first part of this is based on "If I Only Had a Brain" from The Wizard of Oz.
  • The reference to a janitor in this game could also be a reference to a Sierra game called Space Quest, where you play a janitor named Roger Wilco on an adventure. The box art also puts Thy Dungeonman in a pose similar to that of Roger.
  • "1/100 of a gilderupee" refers to the estimated value of a coupon.
  • "Wicked scepter" is a reference to fictional heavy metal band Wyckyd Sceptre from Mr. Show with Bob and David.
  • Killing a Hongrel causes the one-liner "It's just a little crush," which comes from Jennifer Paige's 1998 single Crush. Both Paige and the Chapmans come from metro Atlanta.
  • The message for Killing a Longrel says that 'thou smotes its ruin', which may be a reference to Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. He describes his defeat of the Balrog as "I threw down my enemy, and he fell from the high place, and broke the mountain-side where he smote it in his ruin." The film version of the book also said something similar; "Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside."
  • If you try to give something you don't have, the game states: "Just like ye to giveth away something thou doesn't have. And ye STILL has my Game Boy."
