Everyperson and cheat go to www.gamefaqs.com now.

After the pank page, at the main page there a poll of the day: This weeks one was gibberish until i found this:

Poll of the Day ? Snakes on a Plane 0.999~ = 1 You Bought An N-Gage, Didn't You? All Your Base Are Belong To Us YOUR HEAD A SPLODE LUEshi O RLY? YA RLY!

Ps: I'm using Mozila firefox, so it doesn't turn out the same, but go to it now!!?

PPS: Sorry if i yell or demand from all of you guys and the cheats.

Nikolce Kocovski 06:01, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, the poll of the day's probably over by now. I did notice it though, a nice addition to "sightings". (I voted for "YOUR HEAD A SPLODE") ;) Thunderbird 08:54, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
I voted for LUEshi, of course. It's my duty. Crystallina 14:48, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
What does that *mean*, anyhow? -YK 21:35, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
See LUE and Yoshi, then see LUEshi. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 21:37, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

File Download?

Whenever I click the edit tab at the top of any page, it comes up with a window asking me if I want to save a file. The file is "index.php". I always click "Cancel" to be on the safe side but that means I can't edit. Strangely, it haven't got this problem before and it doesn't appear if I try to edit anonymously. Also, I can edit without getting this window if I edit a section, revert a page or start a new comment (like what I am doing now). It's only if I click on the edit tab at the top. Does this happen to anyone else and is the file OK to save? Please help because I can't edit efficently! – The Chort 15:33, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

"Good news, everyone!" "I think I has the soloution!" OK, enough quotes. The main thing is, I don't have the File Download problem anymore! I think because of yesterday's April Fool's prank, my preferences got messed up somehow. You see, I had the "Use external editor by default" option checked which really meant "Download files onto my computer so they can be edited in a text editing program". By unchecking this option, it doesn't try to save any files so there's no more problems! "Thanks for your help, you old broom stick!" – The Chort 18:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

HA HA, I knew it!

Man, that was funny! NOT! No hard feelings, though.--Jnelson09 16:48, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

I actually enjoyed the prank. It's just that when people pretending to be other people say it's real that it gets annoying.—S*R 17:28, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

WikiTikiTavi & server load

Is WikiTikiTavi really easier on a single server than MediaWiki, or was that a joke as well? Jecowa 16:49, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Probably, considering that WTT is a less powerful engine, but it is pretty unlikely that there would be a need to switch softwares. The pages may have been less because there was less formatting, but images seem to me to be the most demanding. Dylnuge videlectrix.png (Talk · Edits) 17:09, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
All that stuff about 'Tavi being better for our setup was made up. In fact, it was purposely exaggerated a bit so that people would realize it was a joke. 'Tavi wouldn't stand a chance running our wiki, which is why we switched away from it in the first place. Happy April Fool's! — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:17, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
I really enjoyed the prank until gullible people started yelling that it was happening and switching sigs. Now I'm almost afraid of what's up y'all's sleeves for next year! =P —S*R 02:15, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Format

Come on, guys! That Tavi prank was kind of in poor taste. You really had me convinced, though. I'll give you that. Could you knid of avoid doing that? It had me seriously concerned.--Image:Homsar-in-motion.gifhr.pngΨHomsarΨroksΨImage:kookysig.gifImage:Cheat-shrug-tiny.gif 18:11, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Eh, I thought it was really funny. I was serious when I said I was happy to use the WTT software, though. Not only was it a prank, but it was a special treat for people who didn't get to use it/a source of nostalga for older users. I'm looking forward to seeing how they top it next year. --User:acekirby13/sig 18:50, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

By the way, for those who are wondering, there's already been a lot of conversation today that's been archived. I don't want to rehash any of that, but I do want to seize the opportunity to get preachy as usual. This whole thing had me "seriously concerned," for a number of reasons.

  1. A number of people knew, or were fairly sure, that it was a joke, but were very angry anyway and talked about crying for hours, leaving forever, or doing unspecified things with machine guns. I'm concerned about these people senses of humor. In particular it was called "cruel" more than once. People spoke as though we'd called a transportation strike in NYC, instead of simply changed the appearance (not even the functionality!) of a reference website about an Internet cartoon. If losing the soft blues and reds of the HRWiki really caused you substantial pain and suffering, then maybe the wiki is a little too important in your life!
  2. A number of other people decided it was for real, and reacted even more violently. Now, in their defense, it's kind of understandable that a change that huge, enacted with no warning or discussion, would raise some ruckus (see the next point: that's why it wouldn't happen!). But I'm concerned about this demographic, too, and their ability to handle change. What if this had been real? I was really saddened to see that so many people were ready to simply throw in the towel and walk away, or used their departure as threats. While it's safe to say that this particular change will never happen around here, Change, in general, happens. Relationships break up. Parents remarry. You get a new boss. You get in a car wreck. If you can't handle your wiki changing color, how are you going to roll with those punches?
  3. Finally, for both groups, a word of stern comfort. At one point, JoeyDay said that the sysops had been discussing the change for a long time in Da Basement, and that it had been archived by now. A lot of people did a lot of tricks with code and other techie methods of trying to prove or disprove that it was a hoax, but all it really took was following up on his claim. There was no discussion there, archived or otherwise. And that brings me to the heart of today's sermon. This kind of change wouldn't happen without a lot of discussion and wiki consensus. Remember? That's how things are done around here. We vote on stuff. We talk about it incessantly for weeks. The wiki is not "run" by sysops or admins in the sense that they randomly decide, in secret, to do something and then put it in place overnight. (Um... hehe... with the exception of this once.) This concerns me, that people would seriously think a change like that that affected everyone would be enacted without discussion, warning, input, or participation. I would hope people trust the sysops not to pull something like that, or, if they did, would stand up to them and supportively, constructively, but courageously tell them it's not right.
  4. In conclusion:
  5. Perspective is good;
  6. Change is inevitable (except from a vending machine);
  7. Give the wiki more credit;
  8. Investigate explanations; and
  9. When in doubt... chill. (If we were steering a Nuclear Class Submarine, a moments' hesitation or reflection and a relaxed attitude would be deadly. We're not.)
  10. This concludes How To Make April Fool's Educational in Ten Easy Steps. —AbdiViklas 19:57, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
For the record, I trusted the sysops completely. I think that that's a sign of how truly good you guys were. But I still can't see why there was so many people trying to prove it wrong. I heard countless people (you know who you are) trying to prove to me that it was a prank. I cannot believe that you thought there would be any benefit in ruining the prank for everyone. Why? Why did you think it was so imperative to make sure people knew and the sysop's trick was ruined? Because even if I knew, at least I would keep a secret better. — Seriously (Talk) 21:56, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh, and for once, I actually got preachy before Abdi. It just got deleted by Dot com. Yay! — Seriously (Talk) 21:57, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
The difference here, of course, is that AbdiViklas has the wisdom and authority to be preachy. When he speaks, you should listen. — It's dot com 23:56, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
And I have. The thing is, though, is whether or not I had the wisdom, at least there was meaning. It wasn't mistaking this place as a soapbox as you so "kindly" put it. — Seriously (Talk) 00:16, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
There were two criteria listed above, not just one. Wisdom was just the first of the two. — It's dot com 00:49, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Yet Another Prank-Related Topic

I knew it had to be a prank, I'm no wiki expert but I know enough to know that Tavi couldn't possibly work. Good acting job, though! With crap, Yeltensic (T C) 22:01, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

I knew it was a joke because the Captcha extension I designed was still working properly on the site. n0dalus

Not Another Prank-Related Topic

I knew it was a prank because, well... I saw it happen first hand. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 06:19, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

I knew it was a prank after I viewed the source code that showed "tavistyle.css," saw that Special:Version still said they were using MediaWiki, saw that all of the article names still had spaces/underscores in them (something distinctly not a feature of WikkiTikkiTavi without extensive custom modification--which they couldn't have done in a day), noticed that the "switch" was made arbitrarily in one day with no forewarning, and after all the other obvious giveaways (like when they started making up crap like "X32 caching," which I don't believe is actually real). -- Soapergem Talk.png Contrib.png 07:53, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
I knew it was a prank because it wasn't how the admins usually behaved. They'd get all our approval, or at least tell of it first, and would try to format it to be more user-friendly and familiar before the switch, not months later. But I went along with it anyway to make it more confusing. I qualify as an "admin", right? >.> - Joshua 14:01, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
I was too lazy to dig into the code to find out. See, doing that much work would defeat the original purpose of my coming to hrwiki.org (updates column is better than the "Whats New" button on H*R.com) - being too lazy to dig around and find out any H*R stuff I want to know for myself. --NERD42  email  talk   h²g²  pedia  uncyc  14:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
I knew it was just an April Fool's prank when I saw this edit. I tried to add it to this page but Lapper deleted it! "Next episode, Lapper! Next episooooode!" – The Chort 14:18, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
If I didn't already know about it beforehand, my first clues would probably be from the fact that all the pages (other than the main page) were all identical, and given how much pain it was (or at least seemed to be from looking at the history) to convert from 'tavi to MediaWiki in the first place. Then there's the fact that all the special pages, apart from existing at all for some of them, looked identical to before (watchlist, history, edit, etc, etc)... at that point I'd probably check things like the source code, Special:Specialpages and MediaWiki:Monobook.css to check it was really just MediaWiki. Then I'd laugh and join in the fun. --phlip TC 14:23, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

WTT Theme?

Is there any chance that the prank theme will be made into an actual wiki-theme everyone else will use? It looked kind of cool. (I know the main page was changed to support it, but still.) --AndrewNeo 17:24, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Dot com was planning on doing that, yes. Watch for it in the next while most likely. Thunderbird 17:26, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Great theme! But I did notice there's no link to the Fanstuff on the WTT skin. Could this possibly be fixed? -JestyTalk 10:47, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

The fanstuff wiki link is on the fake main page. It wasn't a separate wiki back then and so isn't up in the links at the top. Since we were trying to make our prank as close to the original as possible (while still maintaining basic functionality), we didn't include it. I have enabled the skin choice in the preferences mostly for the sake of recording our history. If someone actually plans to use the skin on an everyday basis and needs the link, I'll consider going to the trouble to add it, but for now I'm not going to worry about it. Glad you like it overall, though! — It's dot com 21:40, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Probably Another Prank-Related Topic - Underlying community problem?

Now, I may not be the king of enlightened observations, but a pretty good general rule of life is: "If your Wiki nearly blows itself up over a simple April Fool's prank, there may be some underlying problems in the community." Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll just go back to my little corner of the Wiki and hide again. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Yeah, I think you meant, "If your users blow themselves up over a simple prank, then they need to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves why they're freaking out over nothing." I could also make several generalizations about those who went bonkers, but I believe I'll postpone... — It's dot com 21:47, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
I think we may be thinking on the same wavelength when it comes to the generalizations, here. Either way, I did tend to mean the major "user gap" here, due to the NSMC newuser lock. We lost influx for the month that the lock was in place, then all came in a burst, having to learn the ropes at the same time. We've kind of been overwhelmed since. For visual reference:
Kooky's "User gap" diagram of doom!

I love that graph. It reminds me of MS-DOS for some reason. :D Trelawney
I think the graph realy shows...something. I was around as a user during the User gap but I didn't learn any thing. User:pieinbubsface/sig 02:29, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Heh, nice little graph you got there, pretty accurate, if you ask me. I like the term "Era of Good Feelings". Has Matt? (talk) 02:35, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
The term "Era of Good Feelings" seems to me designed to alienate and offend new users like me who are genuinely trying to be useful and intelligent contributors to the community. But that's just me. — Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 07:18, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
I don't know; I'm not doubting your graph so much as the idea that it's connected to Saturday's ruckus. Most of the people making the most noise were major users (as opposed to occasional ones). And actually I'm not all that convinced of the graph now that you mention it; I predate NSMC, and when I joined there were a number of prominent users and minor users both who dropped off the radar since (Thesmokingmonkey comes to mind). And back then there were both kinds of users joining too, and the occasional spammer and/or minor vandal. No, I think the only difference is we're seeing the exponential growth in popularity of the wiki, so we simply have more of everything now than we did a year ago. —AbdiViklas 03:28, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Woah, I'm sorry about the "Era of Good Feelings" thing. It was just supposed to be a stupid reference to the time in American history after the War of 1812 when Federalist party dissolved and there were few disagreements. The graph wasn't meant to alienate anyone, or claim superiority of pre-NSMC users. Also, Abdi, sorry about making it look like there were no spammers or vandals pre-NSMC, I should've made that apparent. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r) 20:41, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
