@StrongBadActual is Strong Bad's Twitter (also known as X) account. It posts a variety of original text, images, and videos, some promoting recent Homestar Runner projects, others responding to fans. The account has surpassed 97,000 followers as of 2023.

In recent years, @StrongBadActual has become the most active facet of the Homestar Runner body of work: multiple tweets are posted a month while several months can pass between site updates. The account has also superseded several aspects of the site: Strong Bad Emails now prompt viewers to ">tweet here to email strong bad @StrongBadActual" rather than emailing strongbad@homestarrunner.com, fan works are recognized on the account rather than through Weekly Fanstuff, Fan Costumes are solicited through tweets rather than emails, and several short toons have only been released on Twitter.

[edit] History

Homestar Runner went on an extended hiatus beginning in 2010. Matt Chapman registered a personal Twitter account, @ronginald, on September 3, 2011 and occasionally interacted with fans before closing the account on January 22, 2013; @StrongBadActual was registered days later on September 29, 2011, but remained inactive. When Matt was interviewed on the July 7, 2014 episode of The Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show, he spoke about potentially reviving the site and discussed "giv[ing] Strong Bad a Twitter account" as something The Brothers Chaps "would have to feel out and see if it feels right".

The first tweet was posted to @StrongBadActual on September 26, 2014. Attention was drawn to the account when Homestar Runner co-creator Craig Zobel retweeted its first post. The account was also promoted by Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, who Matt Chapman worked with during the hiatus.

Despite early speculation if the account was official, the release of Fish Eye Lens on October 3, 2014 retroactively confirmed it to be genuine as a prior post had featured a behind-the-scenes image from the toon. The first Lappier email, sbemail 206, released April 1, 2015, marked the first mention of the account on homestarrunner.com. The first time the account was officially linked to was in a 2017 main page message reading "strong bad's twitter". From December 31, 2020 to November 23, 2023, a Twitter timeline was embedded on the index page.

[edit] Explanations

  • Including "Actual", "Real", or similar phrasing in a username (in addition to or instead of existing Twitter verification methods) is common practice for celebrities and organizations who wish to identify an official account from one run by a fan or imposter. Additionly, the username @strongbad was in use on both Twitter and Instagram prior to the creation of either @StrongBadActual account.
