Domain

I know I sound like a scunge and all but, I have absolutely no way of paying for a domain. If someone took on this job I would add donation links and all to my website and the whole shibang. I know this is off topic to homestarrunner.com but this is the only place people view. – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 06:32, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

I don't think anybody here's going to want to pay for your own domain. —Gafaddict Image:Gafaddict sigpic.gif (Talk | Contribs.) 10:53, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
You never know, but I really doubt someone will pay for a domain for you. I think for now you should stay with what you've got. As long as your website works and people can use it, it can grow really big. If the site becomes really succesful, popular and have heaps of content, you can then think about getting a domain name and maybe paying for hosting. Remember that the H*R Wiki was originally just a subdomain of Joey's site (hrwiki.joeyday.com), which meant he didn't really pay anything extra for the wiki at first. Start small. It will take even a year to get the wiki fully started and having enough content to be a good resource. «Rob» 11:48, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
Pertmywert, domain names cost about nine dollars for one year. I think you could realisticly save up for one in a fairly short period of time. -- Tom 20:32, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
I have no way of paying them though. :( – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 02:56, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
GoDaddy takes PayPal, Checking Account Debit, Credit Cards, and Cash. Do you have any of those? -- Tom 03:13, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Nope. :( – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 03:46, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Well, some day then. -- Tom 04:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure all you need to sign up for PayPal is a bank account. It takes a bit of work to get it set up, but once it is, it's like an extra account for online transactions. That's all I can suggest. Thunderbird 08:11, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Does Suncorp count as a bank account? – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 22:12, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, correction. I'm pretty sure your bank has to have online services. Check your local bank, see if you can sign up for online banking. That's what you need. I know at least Royal Bank of Canada and Scotiabank both support online banking. Most big ones do. Small chains I'm not too sure about though. Thunderbird 22:17, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, just in a brief look at PayPal, I don't think that's the case, just an ordinary bank account will do. But maybe Thunderbird was looking harder than I was. (At any rate, Suncorp does have online banking.) Anyway, if you know your bank account number, take it to PayPal and see what happens! —AbdiViklas 22:24, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
LIAR! I have a suncorp account and it does have internet banking. And I am Australian. :P – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 10:21, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Um... I imagine you're responding to Thunderbird, but aren't you saying exactly what I said above you? Anyway, congratulations; looks like you're in business. —AbdiViklas 10:35, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I have changed my mind. I am gonna stay subdomain for a while. :-) – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 10:48, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Idea?

I'm not quite sure where to put this idea, so i'll put it here. What about, instead of just the {{tobedeleted}} tag, we have a matching one for talk pages? Something like: {{talktobedeleted}} or something? The only reason i'm suggesting this is because when you put the {{tobedeleted}} tag on troll talk pages, the link takes you to a Talk:Talk:(pagename) page. If this is a bad idea or we already have something like this or if it's a good idea, let me know. --smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 18:06, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

We already have Template:talktobedeleted. And there's always the multipurpose Template:delete. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 19:09, 15 October 2005 (BST)

Earlier today, it was only at about 1,995,176 or so. By the end of the day, I think we might break 2,000,000 main page accesses!!! Going by PDT of course, none of this 'offical dateline' nonsense. And no east coast timezone either, I think my prediction needs the extra three hours. It would have been cooler if it coincided with Wikiday, but it's a good general marker anyways. 2 years, 2,000,000 main page views. (I know I'm ignoring the discrepency between starting with Wiki Tiki Tavi and starting main page view counting with Mediawiki). Any any case though, I'm hyped. It's a good marker. Thunderbird 18:53, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

At the rate you're reporting, we will break the 2,000,000 threshhold within three hours. — It's dot com 20:43, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Yea, after my initial prediction, I realized that we just might make it before the official dateline clicks over. Thunderbird 21:05, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia article in progress for HRWiki!

I've laid the foundation for a Wikipedia article about HRWiki. It's on my user subpage there until it has enough content to make a complete, non-stub article about it. Here's the link: Wikipedia:User:Kookykman/HRWiki article in progress - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Inactive Admins

Um... the admins AgentSeeThroo, FortyTwo, FurryKef and Stu are inactive, and some of these are the original 5. They haven't made any contributions in months. What happens when an admin goes inactive? Does he get de-admined after a while? - Joshua 22:11, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

No. -- Tom 22:12, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Even FurryKef who has done next to nothing since he gained adminship? (I guess there's no reason to de-adminize anyone...) - Joshua 22:30, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, even Furrykef. Why are you so concerned about this? -- Tom 00:06, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
The only reason to de-admin someone is if they actually harm the wiki in some way. Otherwise, you might as well leave them admin in case they come back. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 00:12, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Or if they were to request to be taken off the roster. Then I'm sure JoeyDay would respect their wishes. But I don't think tha'd happen all to often. Thunderbird 01:00, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
I don't know why I cared so much, I guess its just awkward to me to have inactive admins. (Everything else I've been a major part of got rid of inactive admins.) But I see why NOT to get rid of inactive admins, so I'll just leave it at that. - Joshua 01:03, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Stu may be inactive on the wiki, but he's far from inactive on the forum. Many of our admins do important things around here; they just may not be visible to some of our community members. Others are on hiatus for one reason or another. I guess I'm beating a dead horse now, but there's really no need to de-admin them unless we see suspicious behavior. We have high hopes they'll all return someday. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 16:11, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Boy, we must be popular

I just happening to notice while trying to find a really good way to explain to a friend just what a wiki exactly is that if you search the web for the word "wiki" on Yahoo! in suggestions for refining your search near the top of the returns page, this very wiki is listed second and third! Yay! I guess that means we're doing something good. Or at least popular. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:51, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Wow, that's amazing! I'm surprised something like Wikiquote isn't third. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
Note that we aren't the second result, we are actually the forty-sixth. ACupOfCoffee is just saying that "homestarrunner wiki" is one of the "Also try" links in the results. -- Tom 14:47, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
I figured that. A lot of people must search for "Homestarrunner wiki" to make that noticible, though. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
Just remember that "We're not just popular, we're pure lowest common denominator"(Quote from Futurama). -RadSkat3

Wikipedia

You wikipedia link system is slightly broken. When you write Wikipedia:Homestar Runner it points to http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner. It still works but eventually wikipedia may stop this workaround which so far is being preserved for histrorical reasons. Some discussion occured a couple of weeks ago about whether the old links should be done away with (they decided against it). Your site ought to change to the newer version just in case. Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2005-10-24/Multilingual redirects might be enlightening (that's a lot of wikipedia:'s in a row). (~~some guy at wikipedia who also happens to watch HR~~)

Yeah; I wasn't sure whether that was some kind of provision for people who preferred their 'Pedia in another language. My filtering service, while they have been convinced that they can't very well block "en.wikipedia~", have compromised by blocking "www.wikipedia~" (or maybe it's a relic they've overlooked). Either way, I can't use the links, and have to type in "en" by hand. —AbdiViklas 18:28, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Fixed. And I see that the Interwiki map was changed a while ago. Thanks. -- Tom 18:56, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Still seems broken. It works on this page but others (I noticed it at sb_email_22#Explanations) still point to the old url (maybe it's a cache issue though). ~~me again~~
Yeah, try a hard refresh. They all said en.wikipedia when I looked at them. — It's dot com 04:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

New Halloween Toon...

I'm not exactly sure if I'm allowed to post here, because I'm not a real member, but I'd just like someone to know that there is a new Halloween toon, and if someone could update the wiki accordingly... (I'd do it myself, but I'm horrible at Wiki-ing.) Thanks.

You're certainly allowed to post (and also to become a member!). The page is in progress at Halloween Potion-ma-jig. —AbdiViklas 06:36, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
And it is now finished. Please do become a member.— talk Bubsty edits 02:02, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Build a Timeline?

I got an idea for a page: a complete timeline of every toon. When I first discovered H*R, I wanted to take it chronologically (which helps; e.g. you meet Homsar in the email that explains his name). However, I did it by simply going through the toons one genre at a time, overlooking some, then going through the sbemails from bottom to top. It would be nice to have something that showed where the toons fell in the chronology of sbemails. Aside from helping anyone who might be trying to do the same thing I did, it would be helpful to tell at a glance what predated what.

One difficulty is that some toons are currently labelled only with the month and year, or even just the year, but I imagine some detective work could figure those out.

So what about it, guys? Is it worth doing? And if so, what should I call it? Timeline? Chronology? —AbdiViklas 03:50, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Don't we already have a timeline? How is that different from H*R.com updates? — It's dot com 04:01, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Hm... no, you're right, that's exactly what I was thinking of. It only goes back to sbemail #7, though; I guess I might make it a long-term goal to do some detective work on the release dates of the earliest days and update it. But not today! —AbdiViklas 04:08, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
See also Talk:H*R.com updates 2001. -- Tom 06:52, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Yea, sadly that was the best I could come up with for certain (I used livejournals, and a bit of fark). The one thing further we could do, would be to estimate many of the other toons and main pages, such as the Halloween toons being C. October 31st, 2000, ect. But for those, I think it would be best to use C, to denote 'circa' or 'about', and perhaps B and A for before and after a certain date, if that becomes applicable. That too though, could only go so far. We won't be able to guess everything, just anything reasonable, probably mostly holiday toons. I'll try and get on it later if I have time, you're welcome to start it up too if you want. 2002 and 2003 are pretty much totally finished, maybe a bit of 2002 could be done, but 2001 and 2000 could use some guestimation. Thunderbird 07:15, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Live Journals Side Note:

If you go to the livejournals site, you'll notice the topics and subjects slowly grow over 2001, 2002, and 2003, but by 2004 they start to shrink again, around the time of the Wiki's creation. Now they're just about back to the state they were in in 2002. It could just be a coincidence, or the Wiki may have just about replaced the use of the livejournals site. Also if you look at any subjects about 'what happened when' type questions, they usually end with something along the lines of 'you know we have a wiki... Right?' Although it does still have a nice exchange of various H*R type avatars and stuff, and cool news such as this. I even found Tom making a visit over there, letting them know about our 2005 pledge drive. Anyways, there's my big contribution to discussion for the day. I'ma go to bed now, probably. Thunderbird 07:15, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

If you want to link to it from a Talk page or something, just for the purposes of our users having a listen, that would be fine. But I don't think that's something you need to upload to the Wiki and/or put in an article. -- Tom 21:08, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

There is a new Halloween Fan Costumes thing. I already made the page. Somebody make it please: More Halloween Costumes

Editing the main page

Noticed that the message scroll on the main page includes "Messenger Bag Sale!", which links to a subpage on the Store that is not currently linked from the Store main page. The button leads to this page. - KieferSkunk 20:40, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually, KieferSkunk, you can edit the what's new panel. Just go here. Don't forget to update the main updates page as well, if it hasn't been already. — It's dot com 20:53, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
Although some pages may LOOK like they're protected, some are only protected from moves, H*R.com updates 2005 included. Thunderbird 14:19, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, most users don't have the "protect/unprotect" tab at the top, so they don't see any difference. — It's dot com 16:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
But we DO see "View Source" insted of "Edit". Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:02, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmm... I think they should fix that with the next minor upgrade. — It's dot com 19:03, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Why it should be fixed? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:54, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Because if you can edit a page, it should read "edit" at the top, not "view source". — It's dot com 20:29, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Noo.. "view source" is just for protected pages. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:38, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Then you're giving conflicting reports here. If you go to H*R.com updates 2005, which is protected from being moved but not from being edited, do you see "edit" or "view source"? — It's dot com 20:43, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
I see "View Source" on the Main Page, but I do see "Edit" on the Updates page. - KieferSkunk 20:44, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
On pages protected from editing, I see "view source". On pages protected from moves, the "move" tag is missing. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:58, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Good. That's how it should be. — It's dot com 21:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, my problem with the Main Page was that there was no visible way for me to edit the What's New section. I couldn't see any indication that I had edit access to that page at all, until Dot Com pointed me to the template. - KieferSkunk 20:44, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
That's intentional. We tried having a link to edit the what's new section, but it just got repeatedly vandalized. — It's dot com 21:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, then - where do I go to find the edit links for the individual templates, in case I find something to edit in the future? - KieferSkunk 21:21, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
The template to edit the What's new? section on the main page is found at the bottom of the list of Templates used on this page: when you edit it. But please, it's not for general pruning. Only for actualy updates of the site. — Lapper (talk) 21:28, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Also, KieferSkunk, the template you use is the one you used before, if that helps. — It's dot com 21:48, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Figured that. :) I meant in a general sense, how do I get to the templates without knowing the direct link. That helps. Thanks. :) - KieferSkunk 22:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Plus a shortcut I always use, just click 'view source' on the main page, and below the source code box there should be links to all the Templates for that page. Same goes for if you edit a page, they're all right below the 'Save Page', 'Show Preview' buttons. That's what they're there for, so you can easily edit the templates on a page, without having to go searching all over for them. Thunderbird 23:49, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I mentioned that. It works well. — Lapper (talk) 23:51, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh whups, my bad. Guess I should have carefully read the thread first. I tend to skim when it gets this long. Yea, Lapper already covered it. Nothing wrong with emphasis though... :) Thunderbird 01:22, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

It's still up, just rrll rrll slow. I just downloaded Cool Things, and it took about 7 minutes to download, but it did finish. Whenever a server is that slow, some requests time out - it's not a case of the server going up or coming down, rather just the luck of the draw whether it gets to you before the ISP gives up. The symptoms are (to my eye) consistent with a server under heavy load - though why would the load to homestarrunner.com increase so dramatically, and without an update, too? Maybe the same people who were attacking us are now attacking them? (NB: keep in mind this is speculation) --phlip TC 01:04, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Guided Tour

Wikicities has a feature that lets people tour different wikis to get to know their feel and the way that wikis in general work. It might be helpful to new users if we added a tour to the Introduction pages. It could help show people pages like how a page for a toon looks, how a gallery page looks (eg. Characters), STUFF, etc. It would be a good way to show new users all the different types of pages on the wiki and help get them into it faster. -AtionSong 02:42, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

From what I can tell, it's just a series of subpages that uses a template to include certain pages and has a "next" type button. If you want to try it out, go for it. -- Tom 03:57, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

It looks like a tour of all possible wiki's. It helps the wiki by giving it exposure to people who have never heard of it before. Plus, meatballs are yummy (unless you don't eat meat). --Stux 19:29, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Merge Crazy

Don't you think we're going a little crazy with merging things like random food items and companies and such? Are small pages so bad? I'm fine with having stuff from one general location merged, such as radio stations from radio and made up animals from animal, and even Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters simply because there's so many that they're almost an inside joke, but I sort of liked all those various food, company, etc pages lying around. Although there are some drawbacks, they're easier to link to and distinguish on seperate pages. - Joshua 04:23, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Yes and yes. —AbdiViklas 04:32, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
And don't forget this. — It's dot com 04:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
I sencond that! I was even thinking about making links to each of the items in the Minor Companies page but I couldn't remember how. --Stux 04:43, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmm... Well I would have appreciated some feedback at the time of the happening, instead of now, once it's all done. Everybody that's contributed to this thread was also at the discussion for the catalyst yet nobody voiced this level of concern at that time. I suppose it was a somewhat hasty decision to merge them though. It could be reverted again, but I think some standards are desperately needed. At the very least, the redirects are all still there. But if the general feeling is to keep them seperate, then I guess I'll go back and split 'em up again. Thunderbird 06:52, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
I hear ya, T-bird. Those articles have been merged yet Hamburger Shampoo remains intact. To reiterate what Leith just said: some standards are desperately needed. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 07:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
Such is the beauty of a wiki: anything changed can easily be changed back, eh? It's easier to see it in retrospect, however, and I think what we did might be okay, although the bit about standards is very true. But we needn't go absolutely nuts with it. Eventually, everything will be on one superhuge page and internal linking will be nearly dead. Click here for The Entire Content of H*R, eh? --DorianGray
I bet a lot of people would have liked to give input but (1) this is a holiday week, and (2) the time between the proposal and the implementation of the project was just a few hours. When someone proposes major changes like this, no action should be taken for days, not hours. And here in the case of the merged pages, after the first page was done, there should have been time to give feedback to consider whether we wanted to make even more sweeping changes. As a comparison, consider that nearly all STUFF items stay open for at least four days, ususally a week. The more controversial ones stay open two weeks. And when we were deciding whether to implement the current STUFF system, the discussion went on for more than a month. So I ask you, what's the rush? — It's dot com 07:33, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
I think it was too hasty. For one, I was busy with the Fanstuff Wiki's problems at the time. Anyway, I personally think that things should be merged into one page when they all follow the same theme. Things such as Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters, Virus Character Variations and Made Up Strong Bad Animals are good merges. But things like stuff in Minor Foods... some of those pages had plenty of content. The only thing that connects stuff like Staple Sauce and Super Mud is that they are food and that only appeared once. Is just because something only appeared once or twice mean it has to share space with all the others that have similar atributes? - Joshua 14:20, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
Just in case it is on anyone's mind, I just wanted to state for the record that there is absolutely no technical reason for having things in one page. Some like to toss around words like "bandwidth" and "space constraints" sometimes, but I want to make very clear that these things should never be a deciding factor when it comes to merging pages.
I happen to have no problem at all with smaller-type articles and have never really liked the longer type pages that group things. I mean, we clearly don't need an article for each individual Floppy Disk Container or Halloween Costume, but if a page has even a little good content (a few sentences) and can be linked to from at least one article, then our category system should be taking care of the grouping.
I could go on for a bit about how I don't like it when people talk about other small articles when a separate article is being discussed for deletion or merging, but I don't think this is the time or place for that. -- Tom 00:09, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
I will now supply an alphabetical list of all articles that I thought shouldn't have been merged. This is just my opinion, so I'll just stick it out to see the response.
And that's all I can think of right now. I think the seperate characters/places/things of those articles could have their own page. Opinions? Agreements? Disagreements? - Joshua 00:26, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
I agree with you on all those, Joshua. Particularly the first three... Some of the ones on Places Strong Bad Made Up I like having there, but I don't like having "Place" there... Weird, yes? But it was just easy to link a quote when you're done talking to someone... Just put "Now I'm going to go... Place". 'Cept now it's a redirect thing. It's a dumb reason, yes, and shouldn't really be considered in the discussion. But it's the idea behind it that I really mean: these things link all over the place. Piping links and adding #s to the code isn't hard, but it's easier to just make a separate page. Anyway, that's all the disjointed thoughts I can pull out of my head right now. I'll think of more later. --DorianGray
I agree, I agree. Let's just ease up on the merging peoples. — talk Bubsty edits 05:50, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
In the hopes that Joshua's comment is not simply a comment but the start of a discussion about actually reverting some merges, I agree that Companies, Foods, and Places (including "Place") should be de-merged. With the character variations I'm not sure; did all of those have their own page before? I certainly don't think all of them should.
To add to the discussion of the legitimacy of merging: no, bandwidth or space constraints are not valid reasons. What are? Well, the only real motivations I can think of would be an aesthetic aversion to "short" articles (which I don't share; if it's more than two sentences I say let it stay) AND the motivation of ease of access. When items are on the same page, two things happen: you see them, even if you hadn't been looking for them, and it's easy to compare them. One drawback in the wiki format is that we have a lot of interesting pages that might never get noticed because no one clicks through to them. So if an article contains fairly important information but someone would be unlikely to seek it out by name, it might actually be an argument for merging. And in cases where the entries on the page are highly related, merging is good for comparisons: you can look at the Halloween Potion-ma-jig Costumes and see that exactly 5 are inspired by TV shows while 3 are inspired by movies and 2 by video games. There isn't much need, however, to compare Boardelectrix with Freshley's. —AbdiViklas 22:44, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, that's pretty much the job of lists, such as Places and Characters. To let you browse through various articles (with minimal information distracting or overwhelming you) so that you can find the one you want or see an interesting article that you hadn't considered looking for and read it. Also, many, but not all, of the "Other Character Variations" had pages before merging, and several minor variations that were just as big are sitting around with their own pages, seperated from the merged articles. - Joshua 23:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually, he's just making a Homestar Runner page on the Hebrew Wikipedia. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
For example, if you take the first sentence on the Homestar Runner page, Homestar Runner (middle name Michael, or possibly Hal) is the star of the show, but he probably doesn't realize it., and translate it to German, you get Homestar Läufer (mittlerer Name Michael oder vielleicht Hal) ist der Stern des Erscheinens, aber er vermutlich verwirklicht es nicht.. But if you translate that same sentence back from German to English, it becomes Homestar Runner (middle name Michael or perhaps Hal) is the star of the appearance, but he probably does not carry out it. Done through the Dictionary.com translator -AtionSong 16:13, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, but you won't be making a game of translating German to English will you? Ich spekkin deutch, but I don't try to translate german into English. Also translating the wiki would make it more international. --Dinoshaur 16:27, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
But the cartoons themselves are in English, not other languages. I think that's the key bit. If they can understand the cartoons, they're likely to understand the wiki. --DorianGray

I thought about it several times. Technically speaking, I can translate almost everything on the site, exept for the transcripts. But as said, the toons are in English, and if you can't get the toons, don't try to get the wiki. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Heh, I've always had it in the back of my mind as a project, ever since the move to MediaWiki. I'd love to be a part of helping introduce non-English speaking people to Homestar Runner, but the big problem is that the toons themselves are in English. -- Tom 00:12, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Haha, I wonder if TBC would let us dub 'em. I could see it now...

Asilo Cstrella Alfil: Aiy Ninguna! Le Wrestleman!
Fuerte Podrido: Espíritu Excremento...

(That coming from a guy who doesn't speak Spanish at all, and just used a translation site) Thunderbird 02:44, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, it seems to me that if you can't dub the cartoons, it'll be somewhat useless to transcribe them, as it's hard to read along a toon with a transcript. - Joshua 02:47, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Oh, this is funny. Using the computer, I translated "Homestar Runner is like, the coolest thing in the world. It is not even funny how cool he is," into French. It came out: "Le coureur de Homestar est comme, la chose la plus fraîche au monde. Il n'est pas même drôle comme il frais est." Then, translating that back to English, it came out as "The runner of Homestar is like, the freshest thing in the world. It is not even funny as it fresh is." I thought that was just hilarious. — talk Bubsty edits 05:56, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Just for fun, I wondered what would happen if you tried to translate a simple sentance using that thing back and forth, how long it would take until it finally gave you same result over and over again. This is how far it went:

ENGLISH: Ah, the joys of translating back and forth using a computer.
GERMAN: Amperestunde, die Freuden am Übersetzen einen Computer hin und her verwendend.
ENGLISH: Ampere-hour, the joys in translating a computer back and forth using.
GERMAN: Amperestunde, die Freuden, wenn ein hin und her verwendender Computer übersetzt wird.
ENGLISH: Ampere-hour, the joys, if a back and forth using computer is translated.
GERMAN: Amperestunde, die Freuden, wenn ein verwendender hin- und hercomputer übersetzt wird.
ENGLISH: Ampere-hour, the joys, if a using and computer are translated.
GERMAN: Amperestunde, die Freuden, wenn ein Verwenden und ein Computer übersetzt werden.
ENGLISH: Ampere-hour, the joys, if using and a computer are translated.

Just out of curiosity, Heimstern Läufer, is the final result unreadable in German too? (In a completely unrelated observance, it seemed to me as though the Wiki was really slow today, with only around 400 edits in total. Guess it slows down for the big T, eh)? Wow. This looks strange to me (some of the words I couldn't remember well, so I used the translation software and it gave me answers in a different dialect from mine). I decided not to translate Homestar Runner, a lot of shows translated into spanish do that. I didn't even try to tranlsate his name... (ok I ran it through the translation software but ick!) Oh man, if any of you have heard american shows dubbed in spanish you'll notice that it's always the same voice actors for all of the shows! You get to recognize their voices pretty well (and they're so off from what the original voices sound like). I can picture it now... Strongbad having this droopy, dull sounding voice! Wow. Oh! yeah and the funniest thing would be the segment in spanish! You'd probably have to translate that back to english:
Homestar Runner: Welcome to Homestarrunner.com. Do you know Michael? Yes! we are very good friends— He is...
Greg de la cereza: ¡Español!
Oh man! Dubbing is so weird. Oh yes and if you wanna know, the translation for Homestar Runner would be something like: Corredor de la casa estrella. Which word for word is: Runner of the house star (starhouse). Enjoy! --Stux 16:54, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Also notice that the line I quoted above actually has Homestar Saying more than what is written in the transcript (he's voiced over by Cherry Greg). It's bothered me for a while, but I myself had a hard time making it out, but I beleive I can now fix that with some time, patience, and those looping soundclips that have proved every so useful (I gotta start making them myself.) --Stux 17:01, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

NSMC is at it again

I know why the server is slow this time. This is from the IRC channel from about an hour ago.

NSMS (n=NSMC@adsl-96-212-36-203.dsl.sfldmi.ameritech.net) has joined #hrwiki [7 users]
<NSMC> haldo
NSMS (n=NSMC@adsl-96-212-36-203.dsl.sfldmi.ameritech.net) has quit IRC (Client Quit)[6 users]

I hope next time we can pick that stuff up and lock the detabase or something. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 12:08, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps we shouldn't jump to any conclusions until we're sure of two things: first, that this is the actual NSMC troll, and not an impersonator, as well as that he is currently affecting the Fellowsites server. — Lapper (talk) 16:55, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

EDIT CONFLICT: AH-HA! We may have just discovered the vandal's ISP! HRWiki +1, NSMC -1. We're one step closer to finding out his real ip address and getting anony editing turned back on. (Ar least I hope we are.) — User:ACupOfCoffee@

Well, here's the chronollogy of things: (Talking in UTC time): On 10:21 he logged on, haldo and logged off in a metter of exactly 20 seconds. On about 11:20 when I made the transcript I was experiencing the first slowness, exactly one hour after. If this is not one frigging coincidence, I don't know what is. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:03, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Uh. And if my post say "about an hour ago" and it's not, it's because it took me so much time to post this thing. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:05, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Is this why I woke up and had 4,868 emails in my inbox this morning? --DorianGray
Yep. Some users got them, some didn't. If you are a one of those who were spammed, please post your name here! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:24, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
I had the same thing happen, except not as bad. I'm still counting and deleting duplicates. --smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 17:26, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Spammed - completely filled up my webspace, with quota warnings. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:27, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah... I had about 600 emails from a hrwiki admon... Homestramy20|Talk 17:30, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

4 EDIT CONFLICTS LATER: Well, whoever that person is, he's just gone from being merely annoying to outright breaking the law. My email box and webspace were COMPLETELY full this morning due to the flood of "password reminder" emails I just got overnight (Eudora is still downloading them). This crap really ain't funny. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:27, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Some info: I used dnsstuff.com to look up a couple of the IP addresses, and they're based in other countries. Here's the list I came up with:

  • 139.80.38.132 = grant.design.otago.ac.nz (New Zealand)
  • 210.100.138.124 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
  • 211.115.69.146 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
  • 211.249.118.252 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
  • 212.138.64.174 = cache4-2.jed.isu.net.sa (Saudi Arabia)

There were plenty more IPs that showed up in the massive email spam. Evidently, NSMC can either spoof a lot of IPs, or he has rootkits installed all over the world. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:44, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Look at the log from IRC. Could this be his real IP? Could he be that careless? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:48, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
It's possible, but unlikely - the guy could get on the IRC from virtually anywhere. I've dealt with quite a few IRC-based DDOS attacks in my time. :P — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:50, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
So... What am I supposed to do with all these emails in the meantime? Are they at all useful for foiling this guy? Did they really change my password? Anything? --DorianGray
If anything holds true, your password is only changed if you sign in using that new password. So don't, and you should be fine. — Lapper (talk) 18:03, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Good-good. So I can start deleting 'em? Or d'you want me to sort through them for IPs? --DorianGray
Heh. If you want to, sure. Although I doubt we'll be finding out his real IP any time soon. On the other hand, any new ones we find could be blocked beforehand. Hmmmm... — Lapper (talk) 18:07, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
I'm sure it isn't required to search for IP addresses. If we are... then i'm in big doo-doo. Homestramy20|Talk 18:09, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Edit conflict Well, now I'm *relieved* about my only getting 472 password reminders. Heh, *only* 472. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 18:11, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm not about to read through 4,868 emails. I'll just offer the one I opened to tell my friend about it. It's a heck of a thing to wake up and find, lemme tell ya. Anyways, the address is 211.249.118.252. Hope that'll help, even a little. Now then... A-deleting I will go. This is gonna take a while... --DorianGray
Awwww man, I guess I wasn't spam worthy... Oh well. Thunderbird 18:24, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
You want some of mine? I have plenty to spare. --DorianGray
I got about twenty of 'em. No biggie. - Joshua 18:28, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Do you think it's random? Or does anybody see a pattern? What if some user who registered two years ago and made one edit, got two jillion emails every two jillion seconds? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:32, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't know... Random's my bet. But in other news, my email inbox is devoid of all spam now... That was a chore. .-. And one I don't fancy doing again. I bet I have a record, though. --DorianGray
I wish I'd read about this earlier. I just logged in to my email to find 447 password reminders. What really freaked me out about it was that some were from the Fanstuff Wiki, where I don't have an account (or at least, don't think I do). I found this IP address in the Fanstuff emails: 200.226.137.13, and this in the normal Wiki emails: 212.138.64.177. Could we temporarily disable password reminders, or has he/she/it stopped? --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 19:34, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
We have to consider also what restrictions we're willing to live with for how long. You're proposing a situation in which you have to log in to edit and if you forget you're password... you're screwed? The block on new user registration has been up for some time now, and I'd like to emphasize that I don't consider it a liveable solution, and I hope even as a "temporary" measure it doesn't last long. Yes, people can e-mail Tom and ask, but that's not advertised and would turn shy users away.
It's beginning to sound like it would be impossible to ultimately find the real IP. We have to decide what we'll do then. Elitism is very un-wiki, and I hope we can find a way to avoid simply being a closed community of H*R experts displaying their knowledge for an excluded public. —AbdiViklas 19:45, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Here here! I'm now more motivated to work on the ideas I proposed. --Stux 19:50, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Edit Conflict My guess is I got 2853 emails, give or take a few. My ip's were mostly 200.226.137.13 and 200.226.137.11. But I got tons more (likely 48 distinct addresses, each sending exactly 61 emails -- save a couple who got 8 and 38). Gmail is awesome! Gmail is weird! ... Personally, I hope this person goofed and really logged in using his/her own IP address on the IRC. I don't see it being a far cry to ask one of the administrators of these proxies to check to see if they have connections from that IP address in their logs. --Stux 19:49, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
I recommend letting registered users who are already logged in change their passwords back. Because right now, I won't be able to log back in (I don't know which password is right, I keep getting more!) -AtionSong 21:09, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
I had no problem resetting my password back to my normal one. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 21:10, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh, you're right. I got it. Never mind. I guess I'm pretty lucky, anyway. Only 61 emails. -AtionSong 21:12, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Edit Conflict x2 No, no, no. Remember what Lapper said:
If anything holds true, your password is only changed if you sign in using that new password. So don't, and you should be fine. — Lapper (talk) 18:03, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
As long as you use your original password you'll be able to log in just fine, just don't use any of the passwords sent to you. --Stux 21:13, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
It's good to know that others are having the same problem as I, but I "only" got 21 "reminders". the IPs were as follows:
211.115.69.146 (x15) – Unresolved (South Korea)
139.80.38.132 – grant.design.otago.ac.nz (New Zealand)
210.100.138.124 – Unresolved (South Korea)
212.138.64.176 (x2) – cache6-2.jed.isu.net.sa (Saudi Arabia)
202.128.231.209 – Unresolved (Hong Kong)
211.249.118.252 – Unresolved (South Korea)
Gus 23:26, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

I'd go through my 279 password reminder emails and get all the IPs out of them but there wouldn't be anything there that isn't already in the server logs, right? --phlip TC 01:31, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

5:30: Bubsty notices that fanstuff is under attack, looks at main page to see what everyones talking about. See's a lot of people got spam in their e-mail. Checks his e-mail. See's about 10,000 password reminders. Brilliant. — talk Bubsty edits 01:30, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
I actually only got 19 emails, not a lot to look through, but no, I don't think there would be anything new in there that wouldn't be listed already. — Lapper (talk) 02:00, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Um... I have a problem. I can't delete any of the spam. HELP! — talk Bubsty edits 02:16, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Can't delete the spam? Why not? What program are you using? If you are able to join the IRC channel I am there now and I can help you. --Stux 02:26, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
I checked my email. There wasn't a singal new email. I just don't know what's wrong. Oh, and if Tom can here me, I say there should be no new user. Never, ever, plever, JEVER, JIBNEY! JHKJAJSKAJKH. H * R 7 0 0 02:29, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
H*R 700, if there are never any new users, the wiki will slowly die out. Plus it won't exactly be a "wiki" in its fullest. - Joshua 02:31, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

I recieved 184 password reminders from this wiki, plus 36 from the fanstuff wiki, for a grand total of 220. Not too bad, eh? — Kilroy / talk 03:36, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

I got 102 emails from 210.100.138.124's antics. (102? What is this, a list of three-letter words?) Spell4yr 04:06, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Luckily for me, I was checking my email the time it struck so I could block it at only 74 emails! But it was rising by about two every second! <:o - talk Sahm ribs 05:25, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Password Problem

Okay. Here's my problem. I got 324 emails some from fanstuff, some from here and they all say that I clicked the 'email me a new password' button, when I haven't got on the wiki all day! I don't thing the IP Adress is even right. I'm still logged in, but that's because I haven't logged out yet. Somebody help.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 23:14, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
