Guided Tour
Wikicities has a feature that lets people tour different wikis to get to know their feel and the way that wikis in general work. It might be helpful to new users if we added a tour to the Introduction pages. It could help show people pages like how a page for a toon looks, how a gallery page looks (eg. Characters), STUFF, etc. It would be a good way to show new users all the different types of pages on the wiki and help get them into it faster. -AtionSong 02:42, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- From what I can tell, it's just a series of subpages that uses a template to include certain pages and has a "next" type button. If you want to try it out, go for it. -- Tom 03:57, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- That was a very enjoyable tour. Good work, AtionSong. :) - Joshua 14:42, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
Speaking of tours, I think we ought to have a tour bus stop on the Meatball Wiki TourBus system. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 07:14, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- Why? It relates nothing at all to the wiki, and it will not help new members on the site with anything. Unless there's something that I'm mising here. -AtionSong 18:50, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- It looks like a tour of all possible wiki's. It helps the wiki by giving it exposure to people who have never heard of it before. Plus, meatballs are yummy (unless you don't eat meat). --Stux 19:29, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, so the tour has been finished. What are we going to do with it? I haven't seen it linked to from anywhere.

Merge Crazy
Don't you think we're going a little crazy with merging things like random food items and companies and such? Are small pages so bad? I'm fine with having stuff from one general location merged, such as radio stations from radio and made up animals from animal, and even Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters simply because there's so many that they're almost an inside joke, but I sort of liked all those various food, company, etc pages lying around. Although there are some drawbacks, they're easier to link to and distinguish on seperate pages. - Joshua 04:23, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yes and yes. —AbdiViklas 04:32, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- And don't forget this. — It's dot com 04:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- I sencond that! I was even thinking about making links to each of the items in the Minor Companies page but I couldn't remember how. --Stux 04:43, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hmm... Well I would have appreciated some feedback at the time of the happening, instead of now, once it's all done. Everybody that's contributed to this thread was also at the discussion for the catalyst yet nobody voiced this level of concern at that time. I suppose it was a somewhat hasty decision to merge them though. It could be reverted again, but I think some standards are desperately needed. At the very least, the redirects are all still there. But if the general feeling is to keep them seperate, then I guess I'll go back and split 'em up again. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 06:52, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- I hear ya, T-bird. Those articles have been merged yet Hamburger Shampoo remains intact. To reiterate what Leith just said: some standards are desperately needed. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 07:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Such is the beauty of a wiki: anything changed can easily be changed back, eh? It's easier to see it in retrospect, however, and I think what we did might be okay, although the bit about standards is very true. But we needn't go absolutely nuts with it. Eventually, everything will be on one superhuge page and internal linking will be nearly dead. Click here for The Entire Content of H*R, eh? --DorianGray

- I bet a lot of people would have liked to give input but (1) this is a holiday week, and (2) the time between the proposal and the implementation of the project was just a few hours. When someone proposes major changes like this, no action should be taken for days, not hours. And here in the case of the merged pages, after the first page was done, there should have been time to give feedback to consider whether we wanted to make even more sweeping changes. As a comparison, consider that nearly all STUFF items stay open for at least four days, ususally a week. The more controversial ones stay open two weeks. And when we were deciding whether to implement the current STUFF system, the discussion went on for more than a month. So I ask you, what's the rush? — It's dot com 07:33, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- I think it was too hasty. For one, I was busy with the Fanstuff Wiki's problems at the time. Anyway, I personally think that things should be merged into one page when they all follow the same theme. Things such as Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters, Virus Character Variations and Made Up Strong Bad Animals are good merges. But things like stuff in Minor Foods... some of those pages had plenty of content. The only thing that connects stuff like Staple Sauce and Super Mud is that they are food and that only appeared once. Is just because something only appeared once or twice mean it has to share space with all the others that have similar atributes? - Joshua 14:20, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

- And don't forget this. — It's dot com 04:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Just in case it is on anyone's mind, I just wanted to state for the record that there is absolutely no technical reason for having things in one page. Some like to toss around words like "bandwidth" and "space constraints" sometimes, but I want to make very clear that these things should never be a deciding factor when it comes to merging pages.
- I happen to have no problem at all with smaller-type articles and have never really liked the longer type pages that group things. I mean, we clearly don't need an article for each individual Floppy Disk Container or Halloween Costume, but if a page has even a little good content (a few sentences) and can be linked to from at least one article, then our category system should be taking care of the grouping.
- I could go on for a bit about how I don't like it when people talk about other small articles when a separate article is being discussed for deletion or merging, but I don't think this is the time or place for that. -- Tom 00:09, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- I will now supply an alphabetical list of all articles that I thought shouldn't have been merged. This is just my opinion, so I'll just stick it out to see the response.
- And that's all I can think of right now. I think the seperate characters/places/things of those articles could have their own page. Opinions? Agreements? Disagreements? - Joshua 00:26, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- I agree with you on all those, Joshua. Particularly the first three... Some of the ones on Places Strong Bad Made Up I like having there, but I don't like having "Place" there... Weird, yes? But it was just easy to link a quote when you're done talking to someone... Just put "Now I'm going to go... Place". 'Cept now it's a redirect thing. It's a dumb reason, yes, and shouldn't really be considered in the discussion. But it's the idea behind it that I really mean: these things link all over the place. Piping links and adding #s to the code isn't hard, but it's easier to just make a separate page. Anyway, that's all the disjointed thoughts I can pull out of my head right now. I'll think of more later. --DorianGray
- In the hopes that Joshua's comment is not simply a comment but the start of a discussion about actually reverting some merges, I agree that Companies, Foods, and Places (including "Place") should be de-merged. With the character variations I'm not sure; did all of those have their own page before? I certainly don't think all of them should.
- To add to the discussion of the legitimacy of merging: no, bandwidth or space constraints are not valid reasons. What are? Well, the only real motivations I can think of would be an aesthetic aversion to "short" articles (which I don't share; if it's more than two sentences I say let it stay) AND the motivation of ease of access. When items are on the same page, two things happen: you see them, even if you hadn't been looking for them, and it's easy to compare them. One drawback in the wiki format is that we have a lot of interesting pages that might never get noticed because no one clicks through to them. So if an article contains fairly important information but someone would be unlikely to seek it out by name, it might actually be an argument for merging. And in cases where the entries on the page are highly related, merging is good for comparisons: you can look at the Halloween Potion-ma-jig Costumes and see that exactly 5 are inspired by TV shows while 3 are inspired by movies and 2 by video games. There isn't much need, however, to compare Boardelectrix with Freshley's. —AbdiViklas 22:44, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- Well, that's pretty much the job of lists, such as Places and Characters. To let you browse through various articles (with minimal information distracting or overwhelming you) so that you can find the one you want or see an interesting article that you hadn't considered looking for and read it. Also, many, but not all, of the "Other Character Variations" had pages before merging, and several minor variations that were just as big are sitting around with their own pages, seperated from the merged articles. - Joshua 23:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Now that Kertified Klown Kare, Teddy Grahams etc. have their own pages again, what are we going to do with Minor Companies, Minor Foods and Places Strong Bad Made Up? --Sam Goldfish 21:36, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I say that as soon as all their content has been moved, we delete them. We don't need more lists with main lists already out there. - Joshua 22:01, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I'd like to keep them. In reply to your previous post:
- I say delete them, we already have the needed lists: Foods, Companies, Places. - Joshua 21:59, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Foods apparently no longer exists, the Companies section of Characters no longer lists the characters that were removed, and some of the places in Places Strong Bad Made Up do not seem to appear to be listed in the Places page. They are not linked from the Places Strong Bad Made Up page either. --Stux 22:07, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I fixed the food link. And the reason minor companies, foods and places aren't listed on the big lists is because they haven't been updated yet. Why don't you update them? - Joshua 22:14, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I redirected Foods to Items. I thought your original intention was to show a Foods page. A redirect should not hurt. If I have the time later on I will add the missing links to the Characters, Places pages, and Places that Strong Bad Made up pages. Even after that, there should still be little reason to delete the pages. --Stux 02:18, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

This has probably been asked before/been done, but has any of the wiki pages been dubbed in any other languages? If not, we could Babelfish them, or something. --Dinoshaur 12:48, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

- For example, if you take the first sentence on the Homestar Runner page, Homestar Runner (middle name Michael, or possibly Hal) is the star of the show, but he probably doesn't realize it., and translate it to German, you get Homestar Läufer (mittlerer Name Michael oder vielleicht Hal) ist der Stern des Erscheinens, aber er vermutlich verwirklicht es nicht.. But if you translate that same sentence back from German to English, it becomes Homestar Runner (middle name Michael or perhaps Hal) is the star of the appearance, but he probably does not carry out it. - Yeah, but you won't be making a game of translating German to English will you? Ich spekkin deutch, but I don't try to translate german into English. Also translating the wiki would make it more international. --Dinoshaur 16:27, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- But the cartoons themselves are in English, not other languages. I think that's the key bit. If they can understand the cartoons, they're likely to understand the wiki. --DorianGray

I thought about it several times. Technically speaking, I can translate almost everything on the site, exept for the transcripts. But as said, the toons are in English, and if you can't get the toons, don't try to get the wiki. — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Heh, I've always had it in the back of my mind as a project, ever since the move to MediaWiki. I'd love to be a part of helping introduce non-English speaking people to Homestar Runner, but the big problem is that the toons themselves are in English. -- Tom 00:12, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- Haha, I wonder if TBC would let us dub 'em. I could see it now...

- Yeah, it seems to me that if you can't dub the cartoons, it'll be somewhat useless to transcribe them, as it's hard to read along a toon with a transcript. - Joshua 02:47, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

- Oh, this is funny. Using the computer, I translated "Homestar Runner is like, the coolest thing in the world. It is not even funny how cool he is," into French. It came out: "Le coureur de Homestar est comme, la chose la plus fraîche au monde. Il n'est pas même drôle comme il frais est." Then, translating that back to English, it came out as "The runner of Homestar is like, the freshest thing in the world. It is not even funny as it fresh is." I thought that was just hilarious. — talk Bubsty edits 05:56, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Just for fun, I wondered what would happen if you tried to translate a simple sentance using that thing back and forth, how long it would take until it finally gave you same result over and over again. This is how far it went:
ENGLISH: Ah, the joys of translating back and forth using a computer.
GERMAN: Amperestunde, die Freuden am Übersetzen einen Computer hin und her verwendend.

Just out of curiosity, Heimstern Läufer, is the final result unreadable in German too? (In a completely unrelated observance, it seemed to me as though the Wiki was really slow today, with only around 400 edits in total. Guess it slows down for the big T, eh)? ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 07:40, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

- Wow. This looks strange to me (some of the words I couldn't remember well, so I used the translation software and it gave me answers in a different dialect from mine). I decided not to translate Homestar Runner, a lot of shows translated into spanish do that. I didn't even try to tranlsate his name... (ok I ran it through the translation software but ick!) Oh man, if any of you have heard american shows dubbed in spanish you'll notice that it's always the same voice actors for all of the shows! You get to recognize their voices pretty well (and they're so off from what the original voices sound like). I can picture it now... Strongbad having this droopy, dull sounding voice! Wow. Oh! yeah and the funniest thing would be the segment in spanish! You'd probably have to translate that back to english:
- Homestar Runner: Welcome to Homestarrunner.com. Do you know Michael? Yes! we are very good friends— He is...
- Greg de la cereza: ¡Español!
- Oh man! Dubbing is so weird. Oh yes and if you wanna know, the translation for Homestar Runner would be something like: Corredor de la casa estrella. Which word for word is: Runner of the house star (starhouse). Enjoy! --Stux 16:54, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- Also notice that the line I quoted above actually has Homestar Saying more than what is written in the transcript (he's voiced over by Cherry Greg). It's bothered me for a while, but I myself had a hard time making it out, but I beleive I can now fix that with some time, patience, and those looping soundclips that have proved every so useful (I gotta start making them myself.) --Stux 17:01, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
And just for fun:
English: All right, that's it! We need to get you some serious clown care, man!

Back to English: Already right, which it! We must get you what serious clownzorg, people!
– The Chort 17:05, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
I think I would literally burst if I didn't get this out of my systen. That said, it's not any translation we would need.

My email box and webspace were COMPLETELY full this morning due to the flood of "password reminder" emails I just got overnight (Eudora is still downloading them). This crap really ain't funny. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:27, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Some info: I used dnsstuff.com to look up a couple of the IP addresses, and they're based in other countries. Here's the list I came up with:
- 139.80.38.132 = grant.design.otago.ac.nz (New Zealand)
- 210.100.138.124 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
- 211.115.69.146 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
- 211.249.118.252 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
- 212.138.64.174 = cache4-2.jed.isu.net.sa (Saudi Arabia)
There were plenty more IPs that showed up in the massive email spam. Evidently, NSMC can either spoof a lot of IPs, or he has rootkits installed all over the world. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:44, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- Look at the log from IRC. Could this be his real IP? Could he be that careless? — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:48, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- It's possible, but unlikely - the guy could get on the IRC from virtually anywhere. I've dealt with quite a few IRC-based DDOS attacks in my time. :P —

- So... What am I supposed to do with all these emails in the meantime? Are they at all useful for foiling this guy? Did they really change my password? Anything? --DorianGray
- Good-good. So I can start deleting 'em? Or d'you want me to sort through them for IPs? --DorianGray

- Yeah, I'm not about to read through 4,868 emails. I'll just offer the one I opened to tell my friend about it. It's a heck of a thing to wake up and find, lemme tell ya. Anyways, the address is 211.249.118.252. Hope that'll help, even a little. Now then... A-deleting I will go. This is gonna take a while... --DorianGray

Do you think it's random? Or does anybody see a pattern? What if some user who registered two years ago and made one edit, got two jillion emails every two jillion seconds? — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:32, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- I don't know... Random's my bet. But in other news, my email inbox is devoid of all spam now... That was a chore. .-. And one I don't fancy doing again. I bet I have a record, though. --DorianGray
- I wish I'd read about this earlier. I just logged in to my email to find 447 password reminders. What really freaked me out about it was that some were from the Fanstuff Wiki, where I don't have an account (or at least, don't think I do). I found this IP address in the Fanstuff emails: 200.226.137.13, and this in the normal Wiki emails: 212.138.64.177. Could we temporarily disable password reminders, or has he/she/it stopped? --

- We have to consider also what restrictions we're willing to live with for how long. You're proposing a situation in which you have to log in to edit and if you forget you're password... you're screwed? The block on new user registration has been up for some time now, and I'd like to emphasize that I don't consider it a liveable solution, and I hope even as a "temporary" measure it doesn't last long. Yes, people can e-mail Tom and ask, but that's not advertised and would turn shy users away.
- It's beginning to sound like it would be impossible to ultimately find the real IP. We have to decide what we'll do then. Elitism is very un-wiki, and I hope we can find a way to avoid simply being a closed community of H*R experts displaying their knowledge for an excluded public. —AbdiViklas 19:45, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- Edit Conflict My guess is I got 2853 emails, give or take a few. My ip's were mostly 200.226.137.13 and 200.226.137.11. But I got tons more (likely 48 distinct addresses, each sending exactly 61 emails -- save a couple who got 8 and 38). Gmail is awesome! Gmail is weird! ... Personally, I hope this person goofed and really logged in using his/her own IP address on the IRC. I don't see it being a far cry to ask one of the administrators of these proxies to check to see if they have connections from that IP address in their logs. --Stux 19:49, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- I recommend letting registered users who are already logged in change their passwords back. Because right now, I won't be able to log back in (I don't know which password is right, I keep getting more!) -AtionSong 21:09, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

- As long as you use your original password you'll be able to log in just fine, just don't use any of the passwords sent to you. --Stux 21:13, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Could you make it so that when users register, they are "New Users" and cannot edit until a sysop has "looked them over"? That way people can still join but NSMC and other vandals can't. - Ju Ju Master 22:28, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- An autoblock until a sysop looks them over would create a large issue: the waiting queue would be gigantic, to the point of hundreds of users would be waiting days to edit. The sysops can't simply sacrifice hours of time looking at new users. — Lapper (talk) 22:34, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- How many people usually join a day? ANd all you'd need to do is check whetehr or not it has NSMC and lots of numbers in it. - Ju Ju Master 23

Password Problem
Okay. Here's my problem. I got 324 emails some from fanstuff, some from here and they all say that I clicked the 'email me a new password' button, when I haven't got on the wiki all day! I don't thing the IP Adress is even right. I'm still logged in, but that's because I haven't logged out yet. Somebody help.-- Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 23:14, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

MP3s of Marzipan's Answering Machine
I've made myself an MP3 of each of the different versions of the answering machine, so I can listen to them in iTunes without having to click through each individual message. It's great audio-only HR content! Would it be appropriate (and, more importantly, would it be legal) to post them on the wiki? I'm thinking each file goes in the External Links section of the appropriate answering machine article, probably just under "View the flash file for ...". But where would I upload the files? — Bill Martinson 19:05, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Dare I point out the irony? As great as they would be, not only will they use up a lot of space, they might be significantly greater violation of copyrights. Then again we have entire mirror sites around. I guess now I am not sure... but nevertheless, they use up a lot of space and would fit better in a different type of site (much like the aforementioned mirrors). --Stux 19:16, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Good points, and thanks for your comments. Please do point out the irony, because I'm not getting it. — Bill Martinson 19:18, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Oh! I was only referring to the discussion we were having about copyright issues :) --Stux 19:26, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- It would not be appropriate to post MP3 files on the wiki. A sound or video file would be reproducing the content of the original site in a form that could actually compete with it, and that's definitely crossing the line. The irony is that we just had this discussion involving multiple screenshots from toons that feature still images only (like More Fan Costumes). To summarize that discussion Stux linked to, we determined that using a screenshot of each slide constituted reproducing the whole work in a format that mimics its original form, and therefore is not fair use by any stretch. — It's dot com 19:30, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I probably should've been able to figure that out for myself, but with so much specific content on the wiki I guess I assumed it was okay with TBC for the wiki to house their intellectual property. I think I mistakenly thought of the wiki as "having" the Flash files (which are a superset of the MP3s), but in reality it only points to them.
- New question.: When a topic like this one is resolved, do I delete it from the Talk page, does somebody else (or some process) eventually clean it up, or does it stay here forever? — Bill Martinson 19:40, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Different talk pages are handled differently. This one is archived from time to time (see the links at the top of the page). Some users also archive their talk pages, whereas others may just blank them. As for my talk page, it still has every important discussion on it that I've ever had (although I sometimes move things from my page to someone else's in order to keep threads in one place). — It's dot com 19:50, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

protection
I don't know if this is on purpose, but there are unprotected templates included on the main page (HRWiki:Featured article for 2005, week 48). Someone could theoreticaly vandalize the main page. Then again keeping them unprotected isn't such a bad idea (as long as everyone is watching for vandalism). BrokenSegue 05:30, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
