[edit] Guided Tour
Wikicities has a feature that lets people tour different wikis to get to know their feel and the way that wikis in general work. It might be helpful to new users if we added a tour to the Introduction pages. It could help show people pages like how a page for a toon looks, how a gallery page looks (eg. Characters), STUFF, etc. It would be a good way to show new users all the different types of pages on the wiki and help get them into it faster. -AtionSong 02:42, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- From what I can tell, it's just a series of subpages that uses a template to include certain pages and has a "next" type button. If you want to try it out, go for it. -- Tom 03:57, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- That was a very enjoyable tour. Good work, AtionSong. :) - Joshua 14:42, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
Speaking of tours, I think we ought to have a tour bus stop on the Meatball Wiki TourBus system. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 07:14, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- Why? It relates nothing at all to the wiki, and it will not help new members on the site with anything. Unless there's something that I'm mising here. -AtionSong 18:50, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- It looks like a tour of all possible wiki's. It helps the wiki by giving it exposure to people who have never heard of it before. Plus, meatballs are yummy (unless you don't eat meat). --Stux 19:29, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, so the tour has been finished. What are we going to do with it? I haven't seen it linked to from anywhere. I R F 18:33, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

That was great! I think this tour thing will work out nicely. It needs a few touch ups, though. SaltyTalk! 22:48, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Merge Crazy
Don't you think we're going a little crazy with merging things like random food items and companies and such? Are small pages so bad? I'm fine with having stuff from one general location merged, such as radio stations from radio and made up animals from animal, and even Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters simply because there's so many that they're almost an inside joke, but I sort of liked all those various food, company, etc pages lying around. Although there are some drawbacks, they're easier to link to and distinguish on seperate pages. - Joshua 04:23, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yes and yes. —AbdiViklas 04:32, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- And don't forget this. — It's dot com 04:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- I sencond that! I was even thinking about making links to each of the items in the Minor Companies page but I couldn't remember how. --Stux 04:43, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hmm... Well I would have appreciated some feedback at the time of the happening, instead of now, once it's all done. Everybody that's contributed to this thread was also at the discussion for the catalyst yet nobody voiced this level of concern at that time. I suppose it was a somewhat hasty decision to merge them though. It could be reverted again, but I think some standards are desperately needed. At the very least, the redirects are all still there. But if the general feeling is to keep them seperate, then I guess I'll go back and split 'em up again. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 06:52, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- I hear ya, T-bird. Those articles have been merged yet Hamburger Shampoo remains intact. To reiterate what Leith just said: some standards are desperately needed. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 07:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Such is the beauty of a wiki: anything changed can easily be changed back, eh? It's easier to see it in retrospect, however, and I think what we did might be okay, although the bit about standards is very true. But we needn't go absolutely nuts with it. Eventually, everything will be on one superhuge page and internal linking will be nearly dead. Click here for The Entire Content of H*R, eh? --DorianGray

- I bet a lot of people would have liked to give input but (1) this is a holiday week, and (2) the time between the proposal and the implementation of the project was just a few hours. When someone proposes major changes like this, no action should be taken for days, not hours. And here in the case of the merged pages, after the first page was done, there should have been time to give feedback to consider whether we wanted to make even more sweeping changes. As a comparison, consider that nearly all STUFF items stay open for at least four days, ususally a week. The more controversial ones stay open two weeks. And when we were deciding whether to implement the current STUFF system, the discussion went on for more than a month. So I ask you, what's the rush? — It's dot com 07:33, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- I think it was too hasty. For one, I was busy with the Fanstuff Wiki's problems at the time. Anyway, I personally think that things should be merged into one page when they all follow the same theme. Things such as Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters, Virus Character Variations and Made-Up Strong Bad Animals are good merges. But things like stuff in Minor Foods... some of those pages had plenty of content. The only thing that connects stuff like Staple Sauce and Super Mud is that they are food and that only appeared once. Is just because something only appeared once or twice mean it has to share space with all the others that have similar atributes? - Joshua 14:20, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

- And don't forget this. — It's dot com 04:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Just in case it is on anyone's mind, I just wanted to state for the record that there is absolutely no technical reason for having things in one page. Some like to toss around words like "bandwidth" and "space constraints" sometimes, but I want to make very clear that these things should never be a deciding factor when it comes to merging pages.
- I happen to have no problem at all with smaller-type articles and have never really liked the longer type pages that group things. I mean, we clearly don't need an article for each individual Floppy Disk Container or Halloween Costume, but if a page has even a little good content (a few sentences) and can be linked to from at least one article, then our category system should be taking care of the grouping.
- I could go on for a bit about how I don't like it when people talk about other small articles when a separate article is being discussed for deletion or merging, but I don't think this is the time or place for that. -- Tom 00:09, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- I will now supply an alphabetical list of all articles that I thought shouldn't have been merged. This is just my opinion, so I'll just stick it out to see the response.
- And that's all I can think of right now. I think the seperate characters/places/things of those articles could have their own page. Opinions? Agreements? Disagreements? - Joshua 00:26, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- I agree with you on all those, Joshua. Particularly the first three... Some of the ones on Places Strong Bad Made Up I like having there, but I don't like having "Place" there... Weird, yes? But it was just easy to link a quote when you're done talking to someone... Just put "Now I'm going to go... Place". 'Cept now it's a redirect thing. It's a dumb reason, yes, and shouldn't really be considered in the discussion. But it's the idea behind it that I really mean: these things link all over the place. Piping links and adding #s to the code isn't hard, but it's easier to just make a separate page. Anyway, that's all the disjointed thoughts I can pull out of my head right now. I'll think of more later. --DorianGray
- In the hopes that Joshua's comment is not simply a comment but the start of a discussion about actually reverting some merges, I agree that Companies, Foods, and Places (including "Place") should be de-merged. With the character variations I'm not sure; did all of those have their own page before? I certainly don't think all of them should.
- To add to the discussion of the legitimacy of merging: no, bandwidth or space constraints are not valid reasons. What are? Well, the only real motivations I can think of would be an aesthetic aversion to "short" articles (which I don't share; if it's more than two sentences I say let it stay) AND the motivation of ease of access. When items are on the same page, two things happen: you see them, even if you hadn't been looking for them, and it's easy to compare them. One drawback in the wiki format is that we have a lot of interesting pages that might never get noticed because no one clicks through to them. So if an article contains fairly important information but someone would be unlikely to seek it out by name, it might actually be an argument for merging. And in cases where the entries on the page are highly related, merging is good for comparisons: you can look at the Halloween Potion-ma-jig Costumes and see that exactly 5 are inspired by TV shows while 3 are inspired by movies and 2 by video games. There isn't much need, however, to compare Boardelectrix with Freshley's. —AbdiViklas 22:44, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- Well, that's pretty much the job of lists, such as Places and Characters. To let you browse through various articles (with minimal information distracting or overwhelming you) so that you can find the one you want or see an interesting article that you hadn't considered looking for and read it. Also, many, but not all, of the "Other Character Variations" had pages before merging, and several minor variations that were just as big are sitting around with their own pages, seperated from the merged articles. - Joshua 23:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Now that Kertified Klown Kare, Teddy Grahams etc. have their own pages again, what are we going to do with Minor Companies, Minor Foods and Places Strong Bad Made Up? --Sam Goldfish 21:36, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I say that as soon as all their content has been moved, we delete them. We don't need more lists with main lists already out there. - Joshua 22:01, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I'd like to keep them. In reply to your previous post:
- I say delete them, we already have the needed lists: Foods, Companies, Places. - Joshua 21:59, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Foods apparently no longer exists, the Companies section of Characters no longer lists the characters that were removed, and some of the places in Places Strong Bad Made Up do not seem to appear to be listed in the Places page. They are not linked from the Places Strong Bad Made Up page either. --Stux 22:07, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I fixed the food link. And the reason minor companies, foods and places aren't listed on the big lists is because they haven't been updated yet. Why don't you update them? - Joshua 22:14, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I redirected Foods to Items. I thought your original intention was to show a Foods page. A redirect should not hurt. If I have the time later on I will add the missing links to the Characters, Places pages, and Places that Strong Bad Made up pages. Even after that, there should still be little reason to delete the pages. --Stux 02:18, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Translation
This has probably been asked before/been done, but has any of the wiki pages been dubbed in any other languages? If not, we could Babelfish them, or something. --Dinoshaur 12:48, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

- For example, if you take the first sentence on the Homestar Runner page, Homestar Runner (middle name Michael, or possibly Hal) is the star of the show, but he probably doesn't realize it., and translate it to German, you get Homestar Läufer (mittlerer Name Michael oder vielleicht Hal) ist der Stern des Erscheinens, aber er vermutlich verwirklicht es nicht.. But if you translate that same sentence back from German to English, it becomes Homestar Runner (middle name Michael or perhaps Hal) is the star of the appearance, but he probably does not carry out it. - But the cartoons themselves are in English, not other languages. I think that's the key bit. If they can understand the cartoons, they're likely to understand the wiki. --DorianGray

I thought about it several times. Technically speaking, I can translate almost everything on the site, exept for the transcripts. But as said, the toons are in English, and if you can't get the toons, don't try to get the wiki. — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Heh, I've always had it in the back of my mind as a project, ever since the move to MediaWiki. I'd love to be a part of helping introduce non-English speaking people to Homestar Runner, but the big problem is that the toons themselves are in English. -- Tom 00:12, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- Haha, I wonder if TBC would let us dub 'em. I could see it now...

- Yeah, it seems to me that if you can't dub the cartoons, it'll be somewhat useless to transcribe them, as it's hard to read along a toon with a transcript. - Joshua 02:47, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

- Oh, this is funny. Using the computer, I translated "Homestar Runner is like, the coolest thing in the world. It is not even funny how cool he is," into French. It came out: "Le coureur de Homestar est comme, la chose la plus fraîche au monde. Il n'est pas même drôle comme il frais est." Then, translating that back to English, it came out as "The runner of Homestar is like, the freshest thing in the world. It is not even funny as it fresh is." I thought that was just hilarious. — talk Bubsty edits 05:56, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Just for fun, I wondered what would happen if you tried to translate a simple sentance using that thing back and forth, how long it would take until it finally gave you same result over and over again. This is how far it went:
ENGLISH: Ah, the joys of translating back and forth using a computer.
GERMAN: Amperestunde, die Freuden am Übersetzen einen Computer hin und her verwendend.

Just out of curiosity, Heimstern Läufer, is the final result unreadable in German too? - Wow. This looks strange to me (some of the words I couldn't remember well, so I used the translation software and it gave me answers in a different dialect from mine). I decided not to translate Homestar Runner, a lot of shows translated into spanish do that. I didn't even try to tranlsate his name... (ok I ran it through the translation software but ick!) Oh man, if any of you have heard american shows dubbed in spanish you'll notice that it's always the same voice actors for all of the shows! You get to recognize their voices pretty well (and they're so off from what the original voices sound like). I can picture it now... Strongbad having this droopy, dull sounding voice! Wow. Oh! yeah and the funniest thing would be the segment in spanish! You'd probably have to translate that back to english:
- Homestar Runner: Welcome to Homestarrunner.com. Do you know Michael? Yes! we are very good friends— He is...
- Greg de la cereza: ¡Español!
- Oh man! Dubbing is so weird. Oh yes and if you wanna know, the translation for Homestar Runner would be something like: Corredor de la casa estrella. Which word for word is: Runner of the house star (starhouse). Enjoy! --Stux 16:54, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- Also notice that the line I quoted above actually has Homestar Saying more than what is written in the transcript (he's voiced over by Cherry Greg). It's bothered me for a while, but I myself had a hard time making it out, but I beleive I can now fix that with some time, patience, and those looping soundclips that have proved every so useful (I gotta start making them myself.) --Stux 17:01, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Back to English: Already right, which it! We must get you what serious clownzorg, people!
– The Chort 17:05, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
I think I would literally burst if I didn't get this out of my systen. That said, it's not any translation we would need.

- OK, so somehow I missed this discussion last month, so I'm getting in on it totally late. But in answer to Thunderbird's question: Yes, the German is completely ridiculous and unreadable in places. Where in Pete Sampras did Babelfish get the word "Amperestunde"? Oh, and to go way back the person translating the "Homestar... is the star of the show" sentence into German: There's another problem that isn't clear from Babelfish's result: Stern, the word it uses for "star", only means a celestial object; for the star of the show, you say Star, which is directly borrowed from English. So, the German said that Homestar is the huge flaming ball of gas of the show! Heimstern Läufer 04:47, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- And yes, this does mean that my own username is a Babelfishism: No German would ever call him Heimstern. But it would have been boring and not very German-looking if I'd called myself Heimstar Läufer. Heimstern Läufer 04:50, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

- True, but of course the star probably wouldn't be there if it weren't for the double meaning of "star" in English, which just shows that Homestar's name doesn't work too well in German. I chose my username fully aware of this and decided to make it what it was just because I liked the sound of it and because it was German and yet also H*R. 4 EDIT CONFLICTS LATER: Well, whoever that person is, he's just gone from being merely annoying to outright breaking the law. My email box and webspace were COMPLETELY full this morning due to the flood of "password reminder" emails I just got overnight (Eudora is still downloading them). This crap really ain't funny. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:27, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Some info: I used dnsstuff.com to look up a couple of the IP addresses, and they're based in other countries. Here's the list I came up with:
- 139.80.38.132 = grant.design.otago.ac.nz (New Zealand)
- 210.100.138.124 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
- 211.115.69.146 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
- 211.249.118.252 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
- 212.138.64.174 = cache4-2.jed.isu.net.sa (Saudi Arabia)
There were plenty more IPs that showed up in the massive email spam. Evidently, NSMC can either spoof a lot of IPs, or he has rootkits installed all over the world. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 17:44, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

- I wish I'd read about this earlier. I just logged in to my email to find 447 password reminders. What really freaked me out about it was that some were from the Fanstuff Wiki, where I don't have an account (or at least, don't think I do). I found this IP address in the Fanstuff emails: 200.226.137.13, and this in the normal Wiki emails: 212.138.64.177. Could we temporarily disable password reminders, or has he/she/it stopped? --ENUSY 19:34, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- We have to consider also what restrictions we're willing to live with for how long. You're proposing a situation in which you have to log in to edit and if you forget you're password... you're screwed? The block on new user registration has been up for some time now, and I'd like to emphasize that I don't consider it a liveable solution, and I hope even as a "temporary" measure it doesn't last long. Yes, people can e-mail Tom and ask, but that's not advertised and would turn shy users away.
- It's beginning to sound like it would be impossible to ultimately find the real IP. We have to decide what we'll do then. Elitism is very un-wiki, and I hope we can find a way to avoid simply being a closed community of H*R experts displaying their knowledge for an excluded public. —AbdiViklas 19:45, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- Edit Conflict My guess is I got 2853 emails, give or take a few. My ip's were mostly 200.226.137.13 and 200.226.137.11. But I got tons more (likely 48 distinct addresses, each sending exactly 61 emails -- save a couple who got 8 and 38). Gmail is awesome! Gmail is weird! ... Personally, I hope this person goofed and really logged in using his/her own IP address on the IRC. I don't see it being a far cry to ask one of the administrators of these proxies to check to see if they have connections from that IP address in their logs. --Stux 19:49, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Could you make it so that when users register, they are "New Users" and cannot edit until a sysop has "looked them over"? That way people can still join but NSMC and other vandals can't. - Ju Ju Master 22:28, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- An autoblock until a sysop looks them over would create a large issue: the waiting queue would be gigantic, to the point of hundreds of users would be waiting days to edit. The sysops can't simply sacrifice hours of time looking at new users. — Lapper (talk) 22:34, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- How many people usually join a day? ANd all you'd need to do is check whetehr or not it has NSMC and lots of numbers in it. - Ju Ju Master 23:48, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
- It's true not many people join in a typical day, but checking if it has NSMC in the name could be programmed in to the server -- that is until Mr. NSMC caught on and made names more random. Also, if the name's not random, there is no way for an admin to tell if the user's going to be malicious or not since he/she hasn't made edits. It would be very inconvenient for new users to have to wait until they were "allowed in" when an admin got around to it, and still quite some work for admins to have to go over each and every single user account request. Keep in mind too that if anonymous editing is re-established, then this would be a moot point, as any anonymous user could make contributions. If anonymous user registration is not re-established, then we would definitely have a large queue of users that were once anonymous editors but wish to make some kind of contribution. --Stux 01:49, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

- I don't know much about this subgect. If the e-mails keap comeing (are they still coming?) than you should just remove your e-mail adress from the hrwiki. My in site on the new user thing is that administraters should just check to see if the people who want to sing up are on another wiki. if they are and have not been caght spaming then they should be let in becase we know they are a real pearson whoe is not a spammer.User:pieinbubsface/sig 05:09, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think you're a little confused. For one, yeah, those emails quit that same day. And two, I honestly don't think there is a way to remove you're email from it. Anyone, correct me if i'm wrong. Homestramy20|Talk 05:14, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
- In the big wiki you can change your email address and stuff. Here, right now you can't, and my guess is that because the password request via email system was disabled, that section of the preferences was disabled as well. Furthermore, you don't have to worry about changing your email: the email stored in the server is never given out to anyone - not users of the wiki, nor the public in general, it is used internally by the server to send you the requested password information. The NSMC vandal has no way to know what your email is, it only knew the usernames and was only telling the server to send the email on its behalf. Currently, the administrators are working on a solution to the problem (which now requires users to prove that they are indeed human. The system will be in place soon(? -- once some upgrades are done) and everything will sort of return to normal once that is in place. The email attack really didn't do any damage -- it just annoyed and created a lot of confusion. --Stux 22:57, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
I doubt there is. But I have one question: how was NSMC choosing his "victims"? Do we know why he emailed the specific people he did? SaltyTalk! 16:20, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
- Probably was just random... Programmed the 'bot to find anyone it could with a stored email and sent them spam. I don't really see any rhyme nor reason to his actions. --DorianGray
- As far as I know the vandal can't tell if you have a stored email (?? -- unless the request form is somehow different or really does tell you!), still, he/she would just be shooting users at random. --Stux 22:57, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] MP3s of Marzipan's Answering Machine
I've made myself an MP3 of each of the different versions of the answering machine, so I can listen to them in iTunes without having to click through each individual message. It's great audio-only HR content! Would it be appropriate (and, more importantly, would it be legal) to post them on the wiki? I'm thinking each file goes in the External Links section of the appropriate answering machine article, probably just under "View the flash file for ...". But where would I upload the files? — Bill 19:05, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Dare I point out the irony? As great as they would be, not only will they use up a lot of space, they might be significantly greater violation of copyrights. Then again we have entire mirror sites around. I guess now I am not sure... but nevertheless, they use up a lot of space and would fit better in a different type of site (much like the aforementioned mirrors). --Stux 19:16, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Good points, and thanks for your comments. Please do point out the irony, because I'm not getting it. — Bill 19:18, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Oh! I was only referring to the discussion we were having about copyright issues :) --Stux 19:26, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- It would not be appropriate to post MP3 files on the wiki. A sound or video file would be reproducing the content of the original site in a form that could actually compete with it, and that's definitely crossing the line. The irony is that we just had this discussion involving multiple screenshots from toons that feature still images only (like More Fan Costumes). To summarize that discussion Stux linked to, we determined that using a screenshot of each slide constituted reproducing the whole work in a format that mimics its original form, and therefore is not fair use by any stretch. — It's dot com 19:30, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I probably should've been able to figure that out for myself, but with so much specific content on the wiki I guess I assumed it was okay with TBC for the wiki to house their intellectual property. I think I mistakenly thought of the wiki as "having" the Flash files (which are a superset of the MP3s), but in reality it only points to them.
- New question.: When a topic like this one is resolved, do I delete it from the Talk page, does somebody else (or some process) eventually clean it up, or does it stay here forever? — Bill 19:40, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- Different talk pages are handled differently. This one is archived from time to time (see the links at the top of the page). Some users also archive their talk pages, whereas others may just blank them. As for my talk page, it still has every important discussion on it that I've ever had (although I sometimes move things from my page to someone else's in order to keep threads in one place). — It's dot com 19:50, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

- 2003's wasn't released in December (or 2003) at all, but instead, during the summer of 2004, hence the title. (Decemberween In July)
- 2002's A Decemberween Pageant was on the 23rd.
- 2001's The Best Decemberween Ever was on the 21st.
- That's all of them that are known (A Holiday Greeting's release date is unknown.) Not a single one released on the D Day (no, I don't mean June 6; the OTHER D Day). But yea, this is quite the drought. Last one this long I 'member was the drought of late '03 to early '04. I was just new to H*R back then, and when that happened I didn't know what to expect. I was worried they closed down shop or something there. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 01:10, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well, whatever it is, they don't seem to be telling us yet. Who knows? Maybe there was a death in the family and they're spending their time grieving. Only time could tell. --VolatileChemical 03:34, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- No weddings this year, so Decemberween in July Part II is probably out of the question. Death; Possibly, but they would probably have put a notice on their page like Weird Al and Mitch Hedberg. Birth? (new little girl) Maybe the joke this year is that Homestar is so late on Decemberween gifts, he misses it by a day? Or, there's the (very) unlikely chance that instead of referencing Christmas, the cartoon references Hannukah. I'll keep checking though. -AtionSong 15:53, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- The have too many computers for that to matter. It just occured to me though, if it were some delay, would they have put something like a "email soon" notice or some little thing like the pics before the Strong Bad in Jail cartoon? -AtionSong 17:48, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- I know. It's one thing not to update, and it's another thing not to have new weeklies, but it's another thing not to even put a "coming soon" message on the front page. And speaking of which, AtionSong, how would they put a message on their site? I made that same joke to Joey just today. new strong bad email! other little girl! big holiday sale! our brother's dead! Even though I said "Matt" instead of "our brother" to Joey 'cause my friend suggested it was one of the brothers themselves had died. Anyway, the only thing I'm most worried about other than how long it's been since an update, is how thin the message coloums are getting in this conversation. Not only is this paragraph's height half the size of its width, but I could fit the first message in this convo 20 times in the space between the margin and my message. --VolatileChemical 21:09, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- That happens sometimes, doesn't it? If it really bugs someone, or it gets too narrow, someone usually just stops indenting it. --DorianGray

Okay, let's start over. Right now, I'm monitering the news button page. It seems like that would be the first place they put notice of updates (because of Fall Float Parade button). -AtionSong 21:44, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Another thought: Maybe they just didn't have an idea for a cartoon this year, and didn't make one. Maybe all our waiting and anticipation is hopeless. -AtionSong 23:38, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Eh, sounds unlikely. They'd fill in with a weekly, then, wouldn't they? I don't like this drought, as Thunderbird so eloquently put it. -Vooki 23:32, 27 December 2005
- Mabye the whole plot will be that Homestar sleeps through Decemberween, and a couple days after. Or mabye they're making an EXTREMELY long toon, probably based on the Christmas Carol play. Or mabye, I'm psyco.-- Benol, aka Coach B 19:34, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Not counting the store, 20 days and going strong. Counting the store, it was updated, but who controls the store? Not the Brothers. Don Chapman, right. No update to the main sight. Someone close to the brothers extended the sale to make people think the sight was still active by using the one aspect of the site they don't control. They're still dead. P.S. Find someone who likes Homestar, try to convince them Matt or Mike is dead. Matt's easiest. Say you have a friend who runs this video store and they met the Brothers a bunch of times while they were negotiating a shipment of DVD's, and they became friends, so your friend is on the inside. Say your friend told you a brother was in a car crash about 11 days ago (adjust for time) and died about a day or two ago. What fun! --VolatileChemical 23:49, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, now that's just mean. There's probably some stupendously obvious reason that they haven't been doing anything, and when we figure out we'll all feel really dumb for thinking one of them died. -Vooki 19:42, 28 December 2005
How about an article concerning the current toon drought. It's got to be a record (at least for the year). 18:04, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think a fun fact in the next toon that they DO make will be sufficent. They might reference their hiatus when they get back too, like they've done a few times before. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 18:30, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, but these breaks were breaks with no emails, but other stuff. This break is absolutely nothing. At all. Nothing on the main site, or at least anything controlled by TBC anymore. And you and I both know that everyone here is worried on some level. I still think someone died, and no one will admit it. The sale was expanded to raise funeral money. 22 days and going strong. --VolatileChemical 12:40, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- What about the store update on the 28th? It's not anything big, but it's still an update. - Joshua 13:24, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- The question is, why hadn't anybody updated the Store page accordingly? Anyway before you guys start doing away with one or both of TBC through some tragic Shakespearan novel, have you guys considered that they might be on vacation much like Joey Day and the rest of us are? --Stux 16:41, 31 December 2005 (UTC)'
- Perhaps, but wouldn't they put some kind of message on the main page that said something along the lines of "On vacation, be back soon"? Quite frankly, I'm very worried, but that could just be my worrying personality. --Kiwi

- it still hasn't been updated. they'd better make an update soon. this crap isn't funny. it's new year's eve and no new update. even if they didn't make a christmas update, they should have done a new year's toon by now. Seriously 22:53, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

- I always knew this day would come, but didn't want to think about it. I don't know about you guys, but I'm having serious Homestar withdrawals! It's quite pathetic. But Matt, Mike and Co. really deserve a break. But you're right; it is kind of suspect the way that there has been not even so much as a placeholder or a teaser to keep us hanging on. Scary. --GottaSomeHiccups? 00:54, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- Heya GottaSomeHiccups. :) FYI, you can sign your posts using ~~~ (name alone) or ~~~~ (name and date/time). As for the lack of an update: I agree that they deserve a break, and who knows what might be going on for them. But it does seem odd - they've given us notices that they'd be on break for a while in the past. Also, the main site seems to have been having serious bandwidth issues over the last few days. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 00:57, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
We all wonder where the update is, but the kind of speculation in some of these posts here is most unhelpful. I'd say to take it to the forum, but the threads about this subject have all been locked. Just be patient, and stop speculating. — It's dot com 01:03, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Butt Dance from where?
From where the sound in this site come from? It's not the butt-dance I know. — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 10:16, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- The site is obviously fan made. It includes the end of Homestar's character video transcript, which looks like it was superimposed in front of the stage and looped, with background music thrown in. — Lapper (talk) 13:44, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- I know it's fan made. I was asking about the sound loop. It is a variation of the Butt Dance song, but is it from the site? — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 14:55, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- The person who made the cartoon probably found Homestar saying the words in other cartoons and spliced than into the cartoon in time to the music they wrote. -AtionSong 15:34, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Ok. Sounds reasonable. — Elcool (talk)(contribs) 16:01, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Decemberween page updated
I made some grammar/usage/style updates to the Decemberween page. Can one of the Inner Circle please synchronize the copy on the home page (or at least decapitalize the word "Much")? Thanks. — Bill 13:31, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Done. But next time feel free to edit HRWiki:Featured article for 2005, week 51 yourself. -- Tom 14:11, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Cool; didn't know I could. Will do next time! — Bill 14:25, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Also, whenever you edit the featured article, the main page will not automatically update itself, so you need to click the link way up there at the top of this talk page that reads "Purge the cache". That will clear the stored copy of the page and force the system to regenerage it using the updated content from the subpage. — It's dot com 14:55, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Disambiguation Templates
I've undertaken to make all the disambiguation statements as consistent as possible, and developed a suite of templates to help maintain the consistency, save time, and facilitate any future wiki-wide formatting changes. (As with any adoption of a standard, there are a few compromises to be made, but I think they'll be outweighed by the benefits.) You can see side-by-side examples, with template markup, on my Disambiguation user page. If I don't hear any major complaints, I'll implement this across the wiki. — Bill 20:54, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, so I realized that waiting to hear complaints is a silly strategy, so instead I decided to be bold and just made all the changes. — Bill 04:39, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- Heh. Great jearb on these, Bill! They look awexome! — It's dot com 04:43, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Punctuation vs. Hyperlinks
No doubt this has been discussed before at length, but what's the consensus on formatting links when ambiguity arises? There's no problem with references like "in the Strong Bad Email montage", but when both entities get hyperlinked (as in Champeenship) it gets a bit hinky:
- First seen in the Strong Bad Email montage.
This makes it sound like we're talking about an "email montage". Has there been any discussion about adopting a different standard? Here are a few possibilities off the top of my head:
- First seen in the Strong Bad Email "montage."
- First seen in the Strong Bad Email called montage.
- First seen in montage (a Strong Bad Email).
- First seen in montage.
Number 1 solves the problem, but then for consistency we'd probably want to put quotation marks around names of toons/emails/etc. everywhere, and in non-ambiguous cases (the majority) it seems like overkill to have both a hyperlink and quotation marks.
Numbers 2 and 3 seem overly verbose, and a bit talk-down-to-the-readery.
I think I like number 4 the best. Anybody gonna cry if I go on a search-and-destroy mission to kill the unnecessary portion of tandem hyperlinks such as this? — Bill 15:02, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- How about:
- 5. First seen in the email montage.
- It's dot com 15:12, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think that's the best. I used that when I created the Food Still In Peel or Package page. Event though most people would be able to tell the difference between a link to Marzipan and a link to marzipan, this will just give them a quick "heads up", but is not confusing and does not take up much space. Perhaps even just even: First seen in email montage. We can remove the "the", and still the phrase will make sense. -AtionSong 16:16, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Number 5 is good. The "the" is good. I always like to keep in mind how HTML text will read if the hyperlinks are removed (say, if it's being excerpted somewhere), so "First seen in the email montage" is a little better than "First seen in email montage". With or without the link, it reads better. — Bill 19:32, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Number 5... is alive! (Sorry... random Short Circuit quote.) — It's dot com 19:44, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

- And speaking of the debate Stux referenced, I am with It's dot com: it seems to make a lot of sense to link every instance of the title of a toon, email, etc. Without something to set the title off from the surrounding text, the sentence doesn't read properly; and having toons/emails/etc. formatted one way when a link and another way when not a link is THTC (too horrible to contemplate). — Bill 19:46, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Consider which of these is, ultimately, friendlier to the reader (assuming interview has already been linked earlier in the article):
- This was further explained in the email "interview".
- This was further explained in interview.
- I say the latter is better for the reader; it's more concise, more convenient, and more consistent. And if you can get 3 C's into anything web-related, it's practically an immediate standard! ;-) — Bill 19:53, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Consider which of these is, ultimately, friendlier to the reader (assuming interview has already been linked earlier in the article):
- Just to clarify, I do think the "link once" policy is appropriate for links to characters, Wikipedia entries, elements within toons, and so on. In short, if you are using a word, phrase, or name in its normal sense (and linking as a convenience), then link only once; if you are using the word or phrase as a title, then link always. This can maybe be stated alternately as "if the word or phrase is a title that would need quotes, italics, or underlining in print, then link always". Pretty simple, really. — Bill 19:59, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
